The Williams Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church was built in 1912 on land
purchased from the Big Stone Gap Land Company for the sum of $25.00.
Atilla Cox, trustee of Louisville, Ky., Samuel Hubert, Pastor J. W.
Williams, and trustee William Lyons of the A.M.E. Zion Church in Big
Stone Gap witnessed the signing of the deed on June 22, 1904.
The first pastor was Rev. J. W. Williams. Among the first
superintendents and trustees were Samuel Hubert and William Lyons.
It has been stated that the rocks for the church were carried from
the river. Men and women of the church helped with this
endeavor.
What started out as one large sanctuary with no indoor plumbing, and
a coal stove situated in the middle of the room has been enhanced with a
kitchen, indoor plumbing, a new piano, news pews and pulpit furniture,
and a new heating system.
