Mayor's Greeting As Mayor of the Town of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, it is my
pleasure to welcome you to our web site, and I officially invite you to visit
in person!
Big Stone Gap is nestled in the beautiful mountains of
Southwest Virginia, near the head of scenic Powell Valley. With a population of
about 5000 citizens, it is small enough to provide the comfort and security of
small town living, yet we offer excellent educational and healthcare
facilities, and are moving forward with new technology and communications for business
and personal use.
Many of you may have heard of Big Stone Gap thanks to
Adriana Trigiani’s series of novels (Big Stone Gap, Big Cherry Holler, and
Milk Glass Moon) that have chronicled life in our town. Big Stone Gap is
rich in history and heritage. When you
visit, allow sufficient time to tour our four museums, watch a production of
“The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” enjoy traditional mountain music as you
travel “The Crooked Road,” take a walk on our Greenbelt Walking Trail along the
Powell River, travel to the top of the
mountain to visit Big Cherry Lake, or attend Home Crafts Days at Mountain
Empire Community College.
Whether you enjoy spring flowers bursting out, the serene
beauty of summer, the spectacular fall foliage, or the snow of winter, Big
Stone Gap has it all! Enjoy our web site and we hope to see you in “The Gap”
soon.

Sincerely,
Nancy Bailey
Mayor
