Name: R Thomas Cummings CommentsBorn in Big Stone Gap eighty three years ago!
Name: Ernie Kelly CommentsChristmas 2004 “Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Gap Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The museum was closed and sitting on Popular Hill Outside the snow began falling… The town was completely still. At the stroke of midnight, the mansion shook to its core, And through the mystery of Christmas it was nineteen sixty four. Forty years gone in a flash as time turned inside out. The night sparked with miracles and magic was all about. I could see all over town…. the Trail and the Country Boy Pool, The Wildcat, Cadet, Southern, Mike’s, Jack’s and Carmine’s too. There was Powell Valley Drive-in and Crackers Neck And down by the high school stood old St. Nick. The students were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of presents danced in their heads. While mid-term finals were just a week away The teachers had the tests packed in their sleigh. When out in the parking lot there rose such a clatter I jumped to my feet to see what was the matter. I ran to the gymnasium quick as a flash Tore open the shutter and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave a luster of midday to the objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should I see But eight of my teachers with a huge Christmas tree. Mr. Horton was out in front, so lively and quick I knew in a moment he was dressed as old St. Nick. More rapid than eagles, his courses he came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now Broadwater! Now Brooks! Now Dingus! Now Darnell! On Raines! On Read! On McChesney and Maddux too! To the top of the porch! To the upstairs hall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! As quick as bunnies they hurried along Cheering and laughing and singing their song. They were pulling a sleigh filled to the top And by each class room they skidded to a stop. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on each desk The crackling of paper as he threw down the test. His eyes… how they twinked! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, His clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of exams he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, before he drove out of sight Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Name: LYNNE JONES CommentsWe visit my cousin and her husband in BSG - a truly wonderful place, breath-taking views, wonderful people after a 10 hour drive - it takes only minutes to relax. Could move from London to BSG any time. Love the churches and museums, in particular the houses at Halloween were decorated so wonderfully, we could drive by and look at them all. The Mexican Restaurant (opposite the Comfort Inn Motel) was first class and a most enjoyable night was had in there - staff and service were second to none.

Name: Ben CommentsI recently spoke with some friends about what we did on holloween as children. The tradition here is to go to a few neighborhoods and parents drive the children to these places. When we were children in Cadet we would start out from the house and walk up Main Ave West to the ball field and cross over to frog level. We covered every house on both sides of US 58 all the way to BSG and then go down toward the park and up past the fire station and cross back over to Aviation Road and back to where the crossing goes over the tracks and covered all the houses going back to Cadet. It was just us kids, no adults following along. There wasn't any need for them. We were perfectly safe. Some parents would come by in the car and get the over full bags and give the kids more. Mom and dad didn't do that for us and we would usually have two bags heading home. (Piggly Wiggly bags, the paper ones) A lot of the candy was home made fudge and pop corn balls and the like. I don't know about other people but we usually had a pickup load of candy at my house by midnight. We used to set road blocks in Cadet too but that came later. The last time I went out I was 14 and that night Chilton Stewart stopped me, my younger brother and two of our neighbors. We were going with our younger brothers so they could trick or treet. Mom's always are afraid to let the youngest go alone. After Mr. Stewart beat me and my neighbor up we never went out on holloween again. I can't blame him though, we were two 14 year olds who were very dangerous and we did have two very dangerous 10 year olds with us. Funny, the only person who ever threatened me on holloween was the chief of police. The good ole days wern't always good but the good far out weighs the bad. I love this old town.

Name: Ben CommentsThere are several cemeteries in BSG, On is Glencoe located across the street from what used to be the Country Boy drive-in going toward East Stone Gap. One is in Powell Valley with a Norton address, I believe Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. There are others that are less visible, one in Cadet that is very old and hasn’t been used in recent memory. The last person buried there was Alice Bolinsky. One is American Legion also in Powell Valley. One in East Stone Gap just past where the old school was. I'm sure there are many smaller ones at many area churches.

Name: Sherrill CommentsThis is for Lindsey and anyone else who criticizes those who post on here about our home town. I love all the posts especially Ben's. I don't live there anymore but do like to hear about my hometown. I don't think anyone is fixated on the town. It just feels good to hear about growing up there and great memories. I just wish more people would post on here...especially Ben who describes "home" very well.
Name: Ben CommentsI didn't see the Town ratings. Where were they published? Did they rate all towns or just this one?
Name: Lindsey CommentsI think that your town seems a little bit over rated. Maybe you should take your total focus off of this page and improve your own.

My sister and I plan on visiting there when she next visits me from Florida! Sounds like a lovely place. I hated to see each of the sequels in "The Big Stone Gap" series by Adriana. I laughed, cried, etc. right along with each character. Hope your little town has a pleasant day. Cheryle Martin

Name: Born in BSG CommentsI lived the first 18 years of my life in Big Stone Gap, Cadet to be more specific. I remember walking to the main road to catch the school bus over by Eden’s Store. I was in high school before the bus started going all the way around and we caught it in front of the house or close by. I remember the day PVHS opened. My sister was in 8th and was so excited to be going to the new school. I remember the day Kennedy was shot. They dismissed school early I believe. I remember the day the play ground got asphalted. I remember the day the kids from Bland came over. I think we were all just a little bit naive at the time. We would have been shocked to see the world as it is today. In all this I also remember wanting to get out of this little town and do something, anything. I wanted to see the world. I guess every teen feels the same. I know my 17 yr old son does. He is pushing at the walls and pulling at the reins trying to break free of his overbearing dad who he thinks "don't know nothing about nothing". I was the same. Yet in looking back I realize those were the best days. Sure I've had many wonderful things happen to me since but nothing has the appeal of going back to those lazy good ole days when all I had to worry about was whether or not a girl liked me or if there was a piece of chicken left from dinner. I have often wondered what if…. What if I had gone to work in the mines and not gone to college. What if… One thing I have learned in all this is that God is good, all the time. I can see His direction in every step that got me to where I am. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.

Name: Sherrill Funk CommentsWould like to hear from Ben Collins on here. I love his posts. He describes "home" better than anyone. Have you been back lately? I was disappointed that the Post did not cover the reunion they had down there. I looked in the Post and they covered some lady's tea party...it was nice but I would have loved to hear about the big school reunion. I always run into people from Big Stone no matter where I am. We had a second home in Gatlinburg and I sat down one day on a bench in Gatlinburg and there was a nice couple from Big Stone. We are building a home in Tampa and one of the first people I met in the beauty shop was a lady from Big Stone....we are everywhere!! I never get tired of people from home. They are so nice. I have traveled extensively and have never found people as friendly and nice as they are from Big Stone..so Ben if you have been back lately ...fill us in.

Name: Ben Collins CommentsI visited BSG for the 4th, went to the fire works show at the park. I don't know what I was expecting, someone over behind the Fox home shot off a few and I thought "Is that all?" Boy was I surprised. I have to say it was a great display. My daughter and her husband wanted to drive back to Charlotte and see the "Big city fireworks but we talked them out of it. I have never been so close to such a great fire works display. That was pretty intense. Great job BSG!

Name: Tammie Wells Schaaf CommentsI was born in Appalachia 1n 1959 but our family moved to NC when I was just 9 months old. My 4 older brothers and sisters were born in Big Stone Gap and Appalachia also. I have 2 younger brothers who were born in NC. My Grandparents, Lawrence and Eula Wells, lived on East 1st Street right up from Bullit Park. Our family spent 2 weeks every summer at their house. The park was where we kids spent most of our time. We played in the river and enjoyed every moment there. I grew to Love Big Stone Gap and it holds some of my fondest memories. I hope to visit there this summer with some of our family. We still have family living there and nearby. I still get flashbacks when I hear a squeaking swing. I remember sneaking to the park when the grown-ups were busy visiting and catching up on each others lives. Wading in the river, walking into town to visit the museums, peeking through the fence at the play, (Trail Of The Lonesome Pine) and eating chocolate covered donuts as we walked home past the fire station. Life was so rich as a child on summer vacation in the mountains of Va.!

There still is no place like HOME! Yea BSG doesn't have all the high tech stuff but that is what makes BSG so great. BSG has the family atmosphere. Low crime rate and everyone knows their neighbors. I may come back and become Chief of Police like my father one day. BSG is great. I LOVE the small town, great people, and beautiful landscapes. I MISS IT!!!!!

Name: Ben Collins CommentsEverytime I come home I usually wear my radio out trying to find something to listen to. I seem to remember having the same problem growing up. I remember summer mornings listening to the "Theme from a Summer Place" starting and ending the Trading Post. I love that tune. We had a huge peice of furniture that was our radio back then. We didn't have video games to play, had board games and the like but no video games. How ever did we live? I remember Saturdays when Juno and I would hit the trails behind the house and stay gone so long we thought we would starve to death before we got home. His mom made the best hotdogs on Earth. She usually saved our lives by having one ready when we got home. Back then if we were over in Williams Hollar picking berries and came down to Milam and Mabels they would feed us too. In fact you could get something to eat almost anywhere in those days. That's what people did when you came, got the food on. I would love to hit those trails again, go up to liquor still rock. It would probably kill me to make that hike. Maybe on a trailbike. Anyway, I ususally listen to the Bible Broadcasting Network when around Charlotte and anywhere else I can find a station. If you want to know what good music sounds like go to their webcast from your computer and click on listen. I put their website in this post. You can listen to Tommy on Saturdays on WLSD. He would like that.

Name: Ben Collins CommentsI visited BSG this past weekend, took the time to stomp around Cadet. I talked to Buddy Barker, the Taylors, Gary Stipps and his mom and Tommy. Tommy was putting up a swing set for his kids. Do you know somewhere along the road we all got old. There are very few of the men left of the previous generation. Men like Walt Carr, Frank Edens, Sobe, Bill Collins, George Head, James Williams, Charlie Bolinsky, Glennis Maxwell are all gone. I remember as a boy I thought time would never pass. I didn't think I would ever be able to get a job, get my own car, leave home...start my own life. And then I did. Now when I go back I find I can't go back. I can't go over to the Williams and get coffee, the house is abandond. I can't even go to my old house, someone else lives there and I don't know them. They don't know me. I'm afraid I was in such a hurry to get where I wanted to go I forgot how to get back to where I've been. I tried to visit my home but I just couldn't find it. You can't go back.

My parents were raised there and I was born there , we moved away when I was an infant . We always vacationed there when I was growing up. I loved it. The mountains are beautiful. He sure is handsome in that uniform.

It looks like emails from one person to me but when I look closer it looks as if it has been sent to me in the other persons name with enough info to cause me to want to reply but then I can't reply without becoming "gold". Sure sounds like a spammer to me so.... beware. The email from an old friend at classmates is not what it seems. By the way, would Caroline or Kelley Johnson please email me directly? My address is here and costs nothing :) Lorene

Name: Amber CommentsI found the site after finishing the third book in the BSG trilogy (which I absolutely loved). Like many of you, I am from a small town, and like many of you, it took me leaving (I'm a college student 2 hours from home) to appreciate the wonderful qualities of a small town. While reading some of the comments on the site, I noticed that many of you complain about the lack of social activities for the teens. Many small towns face this issue, but coming from a 20 year old, rest assured that life is what you make of it, just as the entertainment in your town is what you make of it. Teens will find their own fun; just hanging out, watching movies, playing sports, being involved in church and school activities, or even (gasp!) volunteering or working. There are many advantages to living in a small town, and I hope those of you who still live in BSG appreciate all that small-town life has to offer. Afterall, for those of you who left, money isn't everything... I hope you someday realize that. I'm moving back to my small town after I graduate from college, and I plan to raise my children in this same small town.

Name: Brenda CommentsHey Ben!! You write beautifully, by the way. Hope your New Year is a healthy and happy one! It's been fun sharing opinions and memories with a fellow "Gapper". I sincerely hope that 2004 brings nothing but good things to BSG and its citizens. Talk to you later. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Name: Martha Belcher Dunagan CommentsI am trying to find info on my dads sind of his family (Prentiss Belcher) and on my mothers side (Ernistine Burke). If you can help me I would love to hear from you. I love this Web site. I moved to Indpls. when I was 9 years old.
Name: valerie owens CommentsI just wanted to make a comment on some of the individuals who wrote in the guess book. I have lived in a big city all my life, and have never lived in a small town. I am sure if I lived in a small town like most of you do, I would probably be scratching my head to try and figure out what I can do for entertainment. I know one thing I would do is make sure that my children kept out of trouble by keeping a eye on them and also trying to arrange some type of community center for small age children through high school teenagers, either through my church or local community organization and if my town did not have one. Then I would gather up as many people in my small town and start one up. This is just my opinion, but it may be a start.
Name: Lisa Hana-Horvath CommentsLinda Hopkins-Gooden, you posted a message regarding relatives with the last name of Rhoten. My grandfather's sister's name is Etta Rhoten, and she lives in Big Stone. Maybe we are related. Please email me at lisalh18@hotmail.com. I am going to email you, but I wanted to post this in case I couldn't get in touch with you for some reason. Thanks, Lisa
Name: Onica CommentsI miss BSG. I was only there for a coulpe of monthes but, I am sure I know all the "fun" people.

Name: Ben Collins CommentsMerry Christmas everyone. Hey I agree with Brenda and Wayne, they have the right to express their opinion. I spent 20 years one month and 17 days in the military defending that right. It's funny how liberal we can be in our thinking until someone disagrees with us and then we become totalitarian. Anyone who doesn't agree with us is narrow-minded. And anyone who agrees with us is a free thinker??? Isn't that funny. I too am saddened at the passing of Ann Jones Barker. I grew up next door to Maggie and Elmer. I loved them like my own family. I used to pick berries and Maggie or Ann would make a pie for us. Those days were wonderful. Maybe the difference between those days and today is the size of the family. I had so many brothers and sisters that it was impossible to get bored. There were at least two emergencies an hour. For all of you who are bored and want to leave, one day you will leave and you can never go back to this day. I have a 17 year old who thinks if he doesn't get a F-150 SVT today they will cease to exist and he will never get one. That's how I felt about that Cobra Jet but I did get one and it was fun but I'm over it now. My 2 year old grand daughter went into a seizure Christmas eve because of a high temperature. I discovered that even though I work in Charlotte for Microsoft, I live 8 miles from the closest hospital. We did make it though and her temp came down. She is fine. It made me think of the time I was working on the Interstate RR Cassie did the same thing. We got in that Cobra Jet and headed for Kingsport. It seemed forever but we got there in less than 20 minutes. Life is short folks, live for today. You can't change BSG but you can move then it will be a wonderful place to visit. Don't be so hard on Wayne and Brenda. They love the place too. Brenda, drop me a line and we'll have coffee.
Name: Toney Hicks CommentsI moved to BSG around 1950 and lived there until my family moved to Fla. in 1958. We lived in BSG with my grandfather and grandmother, Mr. & Mrs. M.R. McCorkle. He had McCorkle Lumber Co.. I last visited there about 10 years ago (maybe longer) and visited with Mrs. Virginia McChesney who was my band teacher. Would love to visit again as I have many good memories. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. My dad was Billy Hicks, mom was Josephene McCorkle Hicks.
Name: Jeremy Hill CommentsI lived on Gilley Ave and Graduated from Powell Valley High School in 96! Just wanted to say hey to everybody! I use to always want to get out of that small town and now that I am, I want to be back in Big Stone more each day!
Name: Sherrill Funk CommentsI was saddened to see that Ann (Jones) Barker had passed away. I have many memories of her and her Mom and Dad when I was little. Her parents got together with mine on Saturday night and they made coffee and had doughnuts and played cards. Ann was older than us but she always hung out with us any way and was so sweet to us. She was baby sitting for us once and my brother swallowed a cap from a Coke and I remember her crying and carrying him around until they got home. I never saw her after I grew up but have lots of fond memories of her.

Name: Jay CommentsHello everyone I have a very special burden in my heart this holiday season. Recently a good friend of mine Rev. Bill Bowan was forced to resign as executive director of the A.R.C.H.S. here in Wise County, Virginia. Most of you probablly do not know Bill like I do. Bill Bowen is my pastor ,and not only is he my pastor but he is a very special person to me. Our church David's Tabernacle located at 314 West Main Street in Appalachia may have to close because of the resignment of Bill Bowen. In case you are wondering why Bill had to resign I will tell you. The company had extra money left over for the holiday season and he wanted to take these kids out to a day of fun and have a cook out and that's exactly what he did. They didn't like him spending the extra money so now he is jobless. That is why I am writing you this letter. Our church has our tv ministry on local channel 37 that reaches Wise, Lee, Scott, Dickenson Counties, and the City of Norton, and Hazard Ky and the people who watch these are mostly elderly folks that can not leave their homes, nursing homes, hospitals, prision, etc. However, due to the loss of Bill's job our tv ministry will be cancelled soon.I am asking you for your help. Please send a love donation to Bill and Freda Bowen if you want to continue the preaching of Jesus Christ to these people. This is a wonderful cause and everyone should try to do their best to help these wonderful people continue the preaching and teaching of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world. If you have some extra monety this holiday please send it to David's Tabernacle to help with these finances. You may send your donation weather it be cash, check, or money order to: David's Tabernacle P.O. Box 367 Appalachia, VA 24216 It doesn't matter how much of a donation you give. Every gift is greatly appreciated ,and everyone reading this should have the love of Jesus and donation. If you do donation God will surly bless you ,and you will recieve ten fold. However, if you can't donate please remember Bill and Freda Bowen and all of our church members in your prayers that we will raise enough money to keep our tv ministry on air for Jesus Christ. Thank you so much and may God richly bless you and yours this holiday season!

Name: leslie phillips Commentsi was born and raised here i went to powell valley , I cheered and played softball for the lady vikings. this is a great town and very beautiful. It's just that there is absolutely nothing for the younger people of the town to do. That is why younger people get into trouble, because there is nothing here for us to do. But other than that its a great place to have and raise your children. and one more thing there needs to be more employment. BE SAFE AND MAY GOD BLESS =)

Hi to Mary and Preston up on the mountian "view" i miss u sooo much i hope u are all doing fine..i love you all.
Name: Wayne CommentsI was not trying to insult the people of BSG. I know many good people who live there. But I stand by my previous messages about the town. It is economically depressed, and therefore suffers all of the inherent problems. (Poor healthcare, poor schools, etc.) That does not mean that every person living there is poor. (Anita tells us that she has been to Hawaii nine times in the past two years!) She is the exception, not the rule. The average income in BSG is low. Again, that is not the fault of the people, it is just a fact. The school system there does not offer the same educational opportunities that are available elsewhere. That does not mean the children of BSG are not as intelligent as other children. It means that they do not benefit from the same opportunities that are available to others. I am sure that the employees of the local hospital are proud of the healthcare they provide. (I am sure Anita's daughter is a fine nurse.) But they do not have the medical staff and facilities to offer a range of care that is readily available in other areas. Again, this is not the fault of the people, just a fact. And for those of us who have enjoyed the benefits of living in a more prosperous area, many of us would possibly return if the economic situation were better in BSG. I am not suggesting that everyone pack their belongings and move to the "big city". I am not suggesting that if you move away, everything will be wonderful for you. I am not suggesting that everyone in BSG is poor and uneducated... However, I am suggesting that there are many more opportunities for a better standard of living outside of Big Stone Gap.

Name: Brenda CommentsAnita, I am entitled to my opinion and the right to express it, according to the first amendment. Your defensive attitude towards BSG is part of the town's problems. It prohibits you and those that share your opinions from seeing the town and its problems as they are. (Are you sure I'm the one that needs to look at BSG with an open mind?) I don't live there but I was born there and had many, many family members there and when we moved, it broke my heart. As I've said before, I have memories of a beautiful town and a childhood that I wouldn't trade for anything and up until July 4th. of this year, I would have given anything to move back there with my husband. By the way, were you serious with your comment about living within driving distance of two colleges? You make it sound like that's highly unusual. Come on now, Anita. Let's be honest here. Did you just use Wayne's and my comments as an excuse to brag about your daughters and the number of trips you've made to Hawaii? Chill, Anita. Life's too short!! By the way, what business are you and your husband in? Just curious.
Name: Anita Wade CommentsI just read some of the most disturbing comments I have seen in a long time. What makes this Wayne and Brenda feel they should say such negative things about this town. There are a few of us that live, work and raise families here that think we have come a long way. A yearly visit does not give you enough insight to even voice an opinion, especially a negative one. My husband and I own businesses here and have raised our family to respect where they came from. One of our daughters is in Hawaii right now and I have been there 9 times in two years, spending 10 days to 3 weeks each time and I can say even Hawaii is lacking some things that I think they need but I won't put them down, they do the best they can with what they have. Our second daughter is a RN in the OB dept. of Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital and is very proud of our medical facilities. As far as the school system opinions...you are dead wrong! We have a wonderful educational system and my daughter is bringing her children back here to go to school so they can get the education they need and deserve. How many areas can you find two good colleges and be within driving distance of both? Look at us again with an open mind and I think you will find that we are doing better than you think. Actually, I don't really care what you think, so, as the old saying goes, "if you can't somethin' nice, just don't say nothin' at all".

Name: Big Stone Gap Neighbor CommentsI have lived in Big Stone Gap for the past five years. Prior to this I have lived in big cities like Columbia, SC, Newark, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, and small towns like Bristol VA-TN. I think it's sad that all the "Used to Live in BSG" think they got it better in the big cities. I never sit in traffic, smell pollution air or drink polluted water; I don't worry about drive by shootings, gangs, whether the mega-company is going to have a massive layoff; I have property taxes a fraction of the big cities, the bank tellers know my name, people bring food over when there's a death in the family, and the neighbors watch out for my kids. If I want to visit a small city I can be there in 35 minutes, while all you guys living it up in the big city can't get across town in less than a hour. Even the poor folks around here that live in trailers have it better than the poor people in the cities that have to live in projects, watching their kids die from crime and drugs. Don't feel sorry for us as Hank Williams, Jr. sings "A Country Boy Can Survive".

Name: Tammy Barnett CommentsWell, after reading the last few comments about what Wayne said, I just had to read it. Well, Wayne, I agree with you. My memories are from the 70's up to today. The "Golden Years" have long past Big Stone Gap, Appalachia, and Exeter. What the solution is unknown to me, whether it be political, a break down in the economy which leads to corruption, drugs, unemployement, and a high increase in welfare. Yeah, here in at Atlanta there is alot of all of that, nothing is perfect but I guess there are still more oppurtunities than in Big Stone Gap. When my mom grew up there here main goal was to get out of there too. She left in the Late 60's and never came back except to visit once or twice a year. I have to admit I wish the same for my cousins, Aunts, and Uncles that still live there. I just want them to see much more. Everyone keeps waiting for the mines to start back up and then everything will be better. Unfortunately, when the mines went down so did the hopes and outlook of many there and that just leaves our heartfelt memories.
Name: diane parker CommentsI have been doing research on my family history. Does anyone know if Campbell Slemp had a sister named Susan who married John Reasor around 1860.
Name: Annie L. Bogus Jones CommentsI am researching my family history in the Appalachia, Big Stone Gap, Stonega areas. Both my grandfather (George W. Boggess) and father (Hollis Allen) worked in the coal mines (Stonega Coke and Coal Company and the Westmoreland Coal Company) there during the 1930s through the 1960s. As a matter of fact my mother and I were both born at Stonega.
Name: Wayne Commentsre: previous post by Ben Collins on 10/31/03 I did not leave my full name on a previous posting because this is a public format. I do not want to receive unsolicited messages. Ben, if you can live in BSG on your Navy retirement, then you should move there. You may enjoy it. If physicians "can't make a living anywhere" as was suggested, then they are managing their finances very poorly. I know many medical doctors, all of whom are living very well. God is everywhere Ben, not just in Big Stone Gap! You should have opened your eyes to the world a little more during your years in the Navy. I am surprised to see such narrow-mindedness from a former military man.
Name: Gary Roberts CommentsI grew up on Powell River above Dorchester in Norton. I came to Big Stone fairly often in those days. My sister lived there for awhile in a trailer bark down on the end of town toward Lee co. The only two speeding tickets I ever got in my life was from Big Stone where i got caught in a speed trap. When I was single there were a lot of hot babes in the town. Why can't young people entertain themselves why does the town need to look after the youth. We always had drinking and fighting and hell raising for entertainment. Why isn't that good enough for this generation? I got to admit half the guys I grew up with or more are dead. So I don't know if I am making such a good call here or not. Of course Viet Nam took a lot of my generation and sent us home in caskets or shells of our former selfs. Jobs are disappering all over and there are few and fewer ever month. That is a result of the second Herb Hoover who sits in the White House today. My Granddaddy was a republican until Hoover and then converted to democrat. The rich folks are driving the agenda every where as they always have and the poor are bringing up the tail. The coal barons always ruled the mountains and they continue to do so today. Its stupid to continue strip minning as you can see what its done to the land. The state and the coal barons together will keep it up until the last mountain top has been ripped off and the last tree upturned. If Sandy Reno reads this tell her to E Mail me as i want ot talk to her. Adios

Name: Tammy Barnett CommentsI too like many others who have signed on to this site with very fond memories of Big Stone Gap, Appalachia, and Exeter. From the time I could walk to now, I come back every year. My mom is from Exeter, The Raymond G. Johnson family, Eva Ruth. My memories consist of hot summers, my cousins Missy and Lisa Johnson, and my Aunts and Uncles (Joyce and Junior). Most of all, my Mamaw (Annie Johnson) and papaw (Raymond). The trains full of coal, Cas Walkers Grocery store, the swimming pool, where me and Missy almost drowned her sisiter, riding in the back of a pick up by Uncle Junior feeling the cold breeze of the spring on the main road there. So, many that it brings back tears. I visit every year, once or twice, I now have children, my cousins have children and we watch them play and laugh and tell them of our crazy summers together. I wish in my heart that I could relocate to Big Stone, but like many other old towns, the economy and education is not like others. The people in the town are wonderful good folks and I will always hold the beauty of Appalachia and Big Stone in my heart.

Name: Lorene CommentsI tried and just can’t resist responding to the recent posts. For the life of me, I can’t figure out what it is the town fathers should do for the teens and young adults in BSG or anywhere else for that matter. What happened to the thought of those doing for themselves and for others? I also don’t quite understand how anyone could say that another person is living where they are for the wrong reasons. Wrong reasons? I’ll bet we all live where we do in pretty much the same way. We go to work each day, shop for groceries at the same chain stores, go to Wal-Mart, go out to eat once in a while, watch the same shows on TV, and go to bed at pretty much the same time. We see the same quality of education and health care (or lack of it) everywhere. I recently visited an uncle in the nursing home in BSG and really want you to know that I have never seen a better place. The place was cleaner than any I have seen and he seemed to be receiving excellent care. I don’t live in BSG any longer. I made the decision to leave because the grass looked greener somewhere else. That might have been a mistake. I wonder what BSG would be like if we had all stayed. I can’t go back now because this town is home to my husband, children, and grandchildren. I truly wish I could see my grandchildren have the same quality of life anywhere that I had there in BSG.
Name: Brenda Edens Funderburk CommentsWayne, regarding your message of October 29, 2003: I couldn't have said it beter. I, too, am originally from Big Stone and up until July 4th. of this year, I would tell friends and relatives that I'd move back there in a heart beat, if my husband and I could find work. However, we attended a family reunion there on July 4th. and it broke my heart to see the "condition" of the town. You're absolutely right, though. The "town fathers" need to stop depending on the outdoor drama and Adriana T. for publicity. Get over it already! They need to devote the same amount of attention and energy to their teen and young adult population (if there are any back there). I can hear those same people saying that "It's easy for her to sit at her computer and criticize us. Why isn't she here doing something about it?". I wish I was.

Name: Ben Collins CommentsI wish Wayne were brave enough to leave his full name. I like Wayne don't live in BSG but for a far different reason. I left home in 1973 because that's what God wanted of me. I served 20 years in the US Navy because that's what God wanted of me. I now live in a little town in NC because that's what God wanted of me. I do make a lot more money than I could make in BSG but... I also pay over $2 for a loaf of bread. I pay almost 4 for a gal of milk. Eggs are nearly $2. My mortgage is over $1600 a month. I could probably live in BSG on my Navy retirement income. Doctors aren’t recruited from foreign countries because we can't get our kids to go into medicine. In fact the only reason I can think of to do it is because that's what God wants you to do. Doctors can't make a living anywhere any more. I have a co-worker who is getting married to a Doctor just finishing her internship and she is nearly 200K in debt. It will take her 10 years on her own to pay that back. I have a neighbor who is a retired doctor and is only 50. He retired because he was loosing the wealth he had made in the past to malpractice insurance. The advantage foreign doctors have is they don’t have to pay so much for their education or they come to the US and get it free. Wayne you don’t live in BSG because you are living for the wrong reason. Wayne give God the glory, great things He hath done
Name: joyce besse Commentsstarted reading your books because a friend let me borrow the triology. I was hooked instantly.
Name: Wayne CommentsMany former residents have posted messages that they miss Big Stone Gap and the beautiful mountains. I look at the pictures on this web site, read all of these touching messages, and feel a little homesick myself... Then I think of the real Big Stone Gap - A place with a very poor economy, a poor school system, poor health care facilities, poor infrastructure, and little hope for improvement. Many of the current town "leaders" and politicians have been in place for years and years. Positive change cannot take place while the 'good old boy' system is still the primary political driver. When I grew up there in the 70s and 80s, the goal of myself and all of my friends was to GET OUT. We recognized in middle school that BSG was no place to live and prosper. The town is painfully stuck in the past. The Great Depression is still alive and well there. I admit that I really miss the natural beauty of the mountains and the friendships that I had there. But those things do not pay for cars, houses, vacations, quality schools, adequate healthcare, and the quality of life that comes with living elsewhere. Why do you think most all of the brightest students leave and never come back? Why do you think most of the doctors have to be recruited from foreign countries? Why do you think the population has not significantly increased in 70 years? The opportunities there are minimal at best. I am certain that many current and former residents will outwardly disagree with my message. But when you get past the hometown pride and think about what Big Stone Gap is really like, you will agree with me. I wish I could live in Big Stone Gap with the same quality of life that I have now. I wish all of my friends and I did not have to scatter around the country after high school and college. I wish my children could experience life in the mountains and still receive a good education. I wish things were different in Big Stone Gap...But they are not, and likely will never be.

Electra Jannino who lives in North Carolina... ...you are a great story teller...and Lucia, Lucia is a great read... ...www.bombshells.com is not really MY website...it is the website of a friend...and I have contributed images (of Betty Grable) to it. But I am proud of my contribution...and it is the closest I can come to having a website. ...I am certainly going to look for some more of your books....Thanks

Name: Stephen Leslie Nottingham CommentsI'm the great, great grandson of George Haines Nottingham, a tanner from Old Estillville/ Gate city. I understand that the Character "Uncle Billy Beamish" in Trail of the Lonesome Pine is loosely based on my Uncle William D. Nottingham of Wise County. My family and I plan to visit the area in the summer of 2004 and attend a performance. Any input on the Billy Beamish character or contact from the Nottinghams of Lee, Scott and Wise counties would be greatly appreciated.

Name: Christy Jean Kladky CommentsThree generations ago, my mother's branch of the family moved from Big Stone Gap to St. Louis. I still have no idea why. I have visited the parts of my family that still live there today, and some who've moved to Kingsport, some to Nickelsville. I've been married for four years and my husband has never been able to make it out to see the splendid beauty that is Big Stone. Just two years ago, at her arrangement and request, we buried my great-grandmother, Edith Virginia Quillen, at Glencoe Cemetery. My husband was unable to get time off for this. He missed seeing the "house on the hill," as we call it, where Edith's brother and sister-in-law lived, and now their grandchildren live there too. My cousin showed me where my mother and she used to hide up in the barn loft, you can still see their scribbles on the wall! Life in the city isn't really the life I'd choose, given the choice, but not growin' up country has caused me to long for it. I've finally got the opportunity to whisk my husband away with me as I travel to meet the hills that are a calling. My hope, that he will see what I see every time I come back, the roots, the love, the people of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. --Christy Jean Kladky
Name: Teresa Gray (Mullins) CommentsI used to live in Big Stone, I moved to Maryland. Most of my family still lives there. It's a nice town but I do agree there isn't anything to do there for younger people that's why I'm glad I don't live there anymore but I do miss my family. Hi Dad(Ernie Mullins), Ellen, grandma betty, my cuz (Crystal Mullins) and everyone else I know. I hope life is treating you guys good.

We plan to bring our grandchildren to visit BSG, Virginia and D.C. in the near future.
Name: Sherry Stachel (Fleenor) CommentsLooking for information on the Fleenor or Cooper families from Pennington and Big Stone Gap area.
Name: Kenny Robinson CommentsAfter reading Ms. Funderbunk's comments from 8/24/03. I have to respond with a column I wrote for the Coalfield Progress. I've been to Charlotte, NC and it's nice but I'll take BSG seven days out of seven. “Bloom where God plants you.” That was the platitude on a card I had given to some friends relocating from Bristol to Mississippi in the summer of 1998. Never suspecting that the winter of 1998 would find my family moving from Bristol to the Wise County area. Leaving Bristol meant leaving family, friends, church and the foursome that met every week for 18 holes of golf. What would await us in this new home our family was headed to? Where would we live? What are the schools like? Can we find a church where all of our family would fit in? Could my wife find a job? What do you do for fun? Could I find anyone play golf with? I remember telling my mother about the upcoming move, she remembered going to Wise County once back in 1956. As far as she knew it was still just a collection of small coal camps surrounded by strip mines. I knew better! I had spent twenty years in and around Wise County building roads for VDOT and I had seen the development that followed the roads. I had seen the motels, shopping centers, restaurants and businesses that had followed the four-laning of US 23 and US 58A. Besides this was just another stepping stone in my career, a couple of years here and then our family would move on to greener pastures. Fast-forward almost five years, I am still here and those early questions have all been answered. We live in Big Stone (You sound like a local when you call Big Stone Gap either Big Stone or The Gap) and have a view of the mountains that is as pretty as anything I have seen in the Smokies. Our girls attend a top notch Christian school. My wife has a successful career as a sign language interpreter. More importantly, I have plenty of golf friends at church and work. Our schedule stays full with all the things there are to do: we attend two great churches, Zion Family Ministries in Wise and Trinity United Methodist in Big Stone. We have made many friends at both churches and they provide opportunities for my wife’s calling as an interpreter to the deaf. Our girls are involved in cheerleading, basketball, youth ministries, etc. I had the opportunity to appear as “Red Fox Taylor” in the Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama all summer. Every week the surrounding area is full of great family activities and places to see. Spelunking at Natural Tunnel, hiking at Flag Rock, Birch Camp Lane and High Knob, paddle boating at Breaks Interstate Park and biking the Guest River Gorge are some of the scenic spots we have experienced. Visits to Best Friends Festival, the Guest River Rally, Wise’s Fall Fling and Big Stone Gap’s Independence Day Celebration have always resulted in great food, fun and memories. County fairs, Pro-Art events, football games, concerts, plays, swimming the list goes on and on. The list of things I want to do when I find the time is even longer: Visits to the museums at Big Stone, dance at the Carter’s Fold in Hiltons, listen to music at the Country Cabin, Ralph Stanley’s bluegrass festival and the KY-VA Opry are all on the agenda. I still plan to attend festivals like Railroad Days, Heritage Days at Pound, the Clinch River Rally and Duffield Daze. I want to see racing at Lonesome Pine Raceway and the list goes on and on. I laugh when people say, “There’s nothing to do in Wise County!” I reply, “There’s not enough time to do it all!” I no longer want to move anywhere else. Wise County is not just a stepping stone on the way to greener pastures. It’s my own little Garden of Eden and I have “bloomed where God planted me.”

Name: Jay CommentsI think that the Big Stone Gap Volunteer Fire Department does a great job for our town, and yet there are people who don't even appreciate what they do for our community. They are on call 24 hours a day trying to help save our wonderful community. I think they are heroes, and great people who want to save what we have. If you have any extra money left this month I would highly reccomend you donating it to these fine people. I think that they also do a great job offering fire safety to the children at school. If it wasn't for these people our town wouldn't be what it is today. I really appreciate all they do for this town, and I really hope that you all appreciate them as well. If you see one of these brave individuals out on the street please tell them how much you appreciate them risking their lives to protect our community!

Name: Brenda Edens Funderburk CommentsMy family and I attended a family reunion in BSG during the 4th. of July weekend. It was the first time in many, many years that some of us had been back to BS and I feel compelled to make the following comments: I cannot tell you how depressed I was upon seeing the town. I remembered it as a beautiful little town, when I was growing up there, but no more. It certainly has a couple of attractive neighborhoods but that's about it. I had always said, before going back, that I would move back there in a heartbeat to live. Well, sadly, after visiting in July, I no longer feel the same way. It's too depressing and so are Norton and Appalachia. We couldn't even find a good, decent restaurant to eat in. The Huddle House beside our motel was very good but we had no place to go for a really nice dinner out. We did end up at a restaurant in Norton that wasn't very good. It was a steak house of sorts. Also, from what I could see, there is absolutely nothing there for teens and young adults to do so no wonder almost every young girl had a kid or two with her. BSG is dying a very slow death and it breaks my heart.

Name: mona bryant CommentsHi there!
Name: Sharon Harned (Diddy) CommentsI have a few ideas for keeping the Appalachia High School open. I went to Powell Valley but we need a rival during Football. Here are a few ideas: Can you contact colleges and see if they would like to hold some off campus class at the school? Does anyone in the town want to offer some night classes that people would pay to go to and the classrooms could be rented at night. What about realty, sewing, dancing,Computer and foreign languages. There are cooking classes and the auditorium could host guest speakers that would draw a paying crowd. What about a Farmers Market on the Football field on Saturdays and a Rummage sale. Can a church use the auditorium on Sunday? Is there a way to have dances in the gym on a saturday night? There should be some way to raise some money to keep the school alive. I would also look into how many children live in the town and what the law requires around schools. Once the school is gone the old high School song will be true "On a hill above Powell Valley in a field of Rye, stands an old abandon Out House know as Appalachia High" I don't want to see this happen !!!
Name: Phillip Morris Freeman CommentsI personally think the picture should reflect the old house or present more than one picture of the entire ground area. Thanks

Name: Lorene Gudger CommentsI was in Big Stone Gap recently to meet Adriana Trigiani and get my books signed. I do LOVE her books and she is a super nice person but I wanted to mention another book I discovered while I was there. It's Amelia Townsend's Keepsakes for the Heart. I am so excited about it. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Someone (won't say who) there told me that if I didn't like this book, he would personally refund my money. Well, he won't have to. In fact, I bought several more of them as gifts. There is a link on the home page in case you haven't already seen it. Amelia Townsend and Dink Shackleford have a winner with this one. I'm sure all the books by the local authors are good. I just haven't read them yet.

Name: Jeanne Farris Elin CommentsI enjoyed visiting the Big Stone Gap website. My grandparents Bonnie and Charles Fleenor lived in the Big Stone Gap area. My mother, Thelma Fleenor Farris,& father, Kenneth W. Farris, went to East Stone Gap High School in the 1930's. They always had wonderful exciting and funny tales about growing up in the area. I enjoyed the book, "Big Stone Gap" and pasted it onto other relatives. My aunt, Ruby Fleenor, and uncles, Bascom and Charles Fleenor went to school at East Stone Gap, too. My uncle, James Fleenor, went to school at Sullivan County High School in Tenn. Unfortunately most of them have passed on....My Uncle Charles is still with us and in good health. We love him dearly.
Name: Lorene Gudger CommentsI've purchased a beautiful letter written in 1890 by a W. Robinson and mailed from BSG to the author's cousin. I can't make out the middle initial but it may be a C. After a little research on the Wise County site, I do think this person married the daughter of Jerome H. Duff. I don't know, at this time, what I want to do with the letter but would welcome all help in an attempt to find out who this author is. It would be very helpful to know where the husband of Sarah E. Duff was from as the author of this letter is writing to a cousin and mentions several other relatives in the same town. Thanks, Lorene

Name: VIRGINIA RANDOLPH SMITH HENDERSON STOUT CommentsI lived in Big Stone Gap from 1932 to 1939. My first residence there was the so-called Rogers House across the street from the C. Bascom Slamp Home on Poplar Hill. I later moved with my family to the so-called Irving House sometimes known as the Wentz Residence, adjacent to the Wise Slamp Home which later became the Southwest Virginia Museum. I met Adriana Trigiani here in Sarasota at a book signing for her book Big Stone Gap and learned that her family moved to Big Stone Gap in the early 70's and now resides in the former Goodloe Tinsley Home across the street from my former home. My late husband and I visited Big Stone Gap in August 2002 and had lunch at the former Mutual Drug Store and connected with family members.

Name: Ashley Embers CommentsBig Stone Gap, VA is a beautiful and peaceful place to live and I love it. But I am now wondering why is it that B.S.G doesn't have industry so that it's unemployed residents will find work. Seems that the folks are moving out to find employment. I'm just hoping and praying that it doesn't become a ghost town. Thank God for Duffield, VA and its upcoming expansion for industry so that folks can stay home and work.

Name: Ben Collins CommentsI got to say it, tried to resist but couldn't. Jesse, you would not believe how many community service opportunities there are out there. Every church that really is a church performs community service as one of their core beliefs. You can adopt a highway. You can visit the elderly in the nursing homes. You might look for some elderly person who needs their yard mowed. Just look, there is a lot that needs done.
