You see...I found my birth family almost 2 years ago using this wonderful message board....An for that I am ever so THANKFUL FOR ALL who share the memories of a special place like Big Stone Gap......I wish I had grew up in these mountains like my 6 brothers and sisters did...by somehow God didnt have that in his plane back in 1968.....I and have found my birth mother at last and I can now learn to be the child and daughter that she could be proud of. I love ALL my brothers and sister so very much and I only wish that each of them could except me for ME....just me.....God bless each and all of you who's heritage runs deep in time with these beautiful mountains. My grandfather, Ramon Revilla, has probably repaired either yours, your dad's, or your grandfather's lawnmower at some point over the years in his repair shop in the garage! Grandpa and Grandma Revilla have since passed away, but I have many memories of my childhood from BSG and their little house by the river near the cemetary. My uncle actually now lives in the old family house to this day. Fun to find this website and stay in touch with BSG!

Name: Martha (Belcher) Sexton CommentsTo no name needed , As you can see I am from Indiana, and trust me the town I live in was as small as BSG. Well not no more. We move from BSG many years ago I was 9 and in a few weeks will be 55. And I do know what I am talking about. Moved to Indianapolis (BIG CITY) after coming from BSG. It has been good to our family don't get me wrong, but after getting married and started a family , busing was a issue so we moved to a small town about the size of BSG so quite and friendly and the young people had respect for everyone and peoples belongings. You could go to bed and leave the frount door unlocked and your windows open. Until the wrong people wanted to give our young people their right to express their selfs. Give them freedom to do as they wish. They took God out of schools, and the parents lost their rights to raise them. Now you better lock your doors and close your windows. Every day my husband and I set on our prouch and have to hear our your people cuss and sware to there friends and to people they don't know. they key peoples cars and so much more. You don't have a clue. Yes I agree BSG needs to give their young people something to do but they better pay attention to what they do give them. And as a grandmoter they still stay inside and play v-games ,We have 9 grandchildern and that is there fav. thing to do. Parents of BSG wake up and get involed with your kids lives. Take the time to be a family. That is what is important. You don't need places for your kids to hang out, They need you as a family. I have been back there and I still love it and miss it. And I am not afraid to give my name , why are you? You well say because I don't live there , Yes that is true but sure wish I did, but all my family is here and here I'll stay., but BSG is turely not as bad as you say. I still have some family there and they are pround of their town. Thanks for giveing me the voice to speek. Martha

I always thought Big Stone was a beautiful place to visit. I hope to visit Big Stone again real soonm
Name: Neil Cameron CommentsMy friends and I have a 5 piece band named "Big Stone Gap". We are based in central England and took the name due to a connection with our fiddle player's dad. He was once in BSG and getting caught in a snowstorm, was given a bed for the night by a local farmer. We heard this story and as we play a blend of folk, bluegrass, country and blues, thought it would be a great and appropriate name for our band. Hope to visit some day and maybe do a gig in our "namesake" !!

Name: Jeff Woodward CommentsTO: Visitor after 40 years Our dad moved to teh Chicago area back in the 60's from BSG, with most of his family. While growing up, he would take us "down home' almost annually. I can tell you, growing up in a city type atmosphere, the serenity of the environment surrounding BSG in phenemonal. The friendliness of the people is admirable, and the "small-town" life is exactly what we need more of in this country. not every town needs to have big-business, or be a major tourist attraction. There are positives and negatives to such an environment; i know, I am living in one. if I could find gainful employment there, I would move to BSG in a heartbeat

Name: Aleta Vicars CommentsThis is a respone to "its me". I would suggest that a group of the young people form a committee such as a "Jr Council" to make a list of items/recreation that they would like to have. Make a realistic budget of the costs and ways to fund these programs. Then present their findings to county council. They may be surprised to find a few open doors. Remember you can ask for anything but every thing comes with a cost. This will not only expose the younger generation to public office but will give them something to do while trying to do something good for their community. I have seen this work several times in small towns. Good Luck. Please post your results on this site because I would love to see the results.

Name: it's me CommentsThis is in response to Aleta Vicars' comment. There have been quiet a few people who have brought suggestions to improve the quality of life of the young people in BSG to council. A suggestion was made for a YMCA or Boys and Girls Club and it was a no go. If you have any suggestions or comments on how to successfully get their attention to try to attract something like that I would love to hear your reply.

Name: Aleta Vicars CommentsI just finished reading the comments about nothing for the kids in BSG to do. Why don't some of you make suggestions to the council about things that you would like to see improve, suggest ways to get them done, even suggest that the kids get involved in the proceedusres of government. You will never get anything accomplished with the negative attitude that you each have about this situation. Yes, I was born in BSG and we left when I was very young. I have been back many times and I have seen changes. But some of the changes that you think you want may not be for the best. I now live in a "bedroom" community by choice. I have lived in larger cities such as Atlanta, you don't want that life style in your town. Yes, there is a lot to do but the negatives out weigh the positives. The crime rate, muggings, murder, etc is horrific. It is not safe to walk to your neighbors house alone. It sounds to me like you think the grass is greener on the other side. It is not! If those of you who want change in BSG will get involved in the process, you may be surprised at what you can get done. I would like to see BSG become a little more friendly to visitors and residents. In fact, I have been promoting it for the fall trips to see the fall colors. This town will always be home for me and I have been gone for over 50 years.
Name: Teresa Kim Evans-Hutchinson CommentsMy cousins Ricky and Boyd (david) Dinsmore still live in Big Stone. I'd love to hear from anyone with information about my family. Please share any memories also please put Big Stone Gap in the subject line so I don't miss it. I hope to bring my kids down this summer so they too can experience one of the best towns in America. Name: It's ME again :) CommentsI loved the comments from "Visitor after 40 years". I couldn't have said it better myself. The older population doesn't want anything in this town for anyone that's why this deadbeat town has nothing. One day when they are all dead and gone this town will disappear of the face of the earth cause if they run out the youth (which they are good at) there will be NOTHING left! I don't blame you for not coming back cause you aren't missing a thing except dirty roads, run down buildings, elderly people, and rich people who think they are better than everyone, and the mighty pow pow pow valley Viking faithful who insist they are the best other than that you aren't missing anything. Election day is approaching and I remind you if you want to continue the same path re-elect these people but if you want FRESH, NEW leadership that will work for you vote for someone other than the incumbents! It’s time for a much needed CHANGE in Big Stone Gap, Virginia’s town council!!!!!!

Name: Brian Commentsto visitor after 40 years I hope you didn't let the door hit you on your way out.
Name: Visitor after 40 years CommentsWe just finished a visit to BSG. Having lived there so long ago not much looked as I remembered. My old school is now a school monument beside a gas station. Ah the signs of change; But was it for the best? For better or worse here are some observations; I was surprised at how little the town has grown compared to the likes of Norton and Abington. Once sleepy little towns that are now into or heading towards the 21st century. After talking to a few of the locals it was apparent that the lack of law for selling alcohol 'by the drink' had kept the town from gaining other businesses. The Holiday Inn was brought up more than once. Seems a local preacher had lobbied to keep the sales of alcohol to a minimum. Well it seems that he and his followers won and between them and the other complaint I heard, that of "land barons" in the area not wanting growth, they've all but kept BSG from much positive growth. And now that businesses have moved on to Norton and other surrounding towns I'm afraid that the tourist business isn't going to be enough. Neither will the up coming movie shoot either. That bandaid will wear off pretty quick. It's a shame really, BSG people deserve more and better. What was it the local paper called BSG? A "bedroom community", where jobs are else where and people only come back to sleep. Besides the mines and 'service jobs' there's not much else actually IN BSG. Speaking of the service jobs, If you're going to make a living serving people (tourist), be it food drink or services (hotels etc) then you should at least make an attempt to make them welcome. They had a gem of a person over at the Comfort Inn, but then I found out she's from Norton. With the exception of the Used book store owner, the local gun shop, Pizza Hut and the Wal-Mart every where else I was met with indifference. Hea all I'm saying is; if you want people to spend their money then treat them like you want to be treated. But I'll give credit where it's due too, everyone in BSG was friendlier than most of the eastern seaboard towns I've been in. Even when they were indifferent they weren't nasty about it. Think New York City... The town really needs a good resturant or two, if you expect to get tourist in then you need to be able to feed them something rather than fast food. I've travelled to over 30 different countries in my life and one of the things I look for is a 'mom and pop' place to eat. Because you normally can really get a good taste of the local cuisine. But you won't find that in BSG. Not a one. None in Norton either, if you don't count Mosley's; Which was nothing more than someone opening a can and warming up the food. Bland, tasteless hospital food. A shame because the decor was pretty nice. The best meal we had the entire time there was from the local Food City Grocery! They cooked some decent vittles there! Do you think passing the 'selling alcohol by the drink' law is going to change this? To late BSG, to late. You let a few people make that decision for you. But when you think about it Norton was set up better for businesses anyway, right off of route 23 they could sprawl out on either side. In BSG you'd have to drive down into the hollower on narrow roads and limited parking. No BSG is going to remain a 'bedroom community' (hea don't shoot me I didn't coin the phrase) a good place for retiree's to come and retire to. And that's good too, there's business in that sort of township, just ask parts of Florida. But if you're going to make that work then you need better places to eat and "over the top" service. Because if you want someone to come back you need to be falling all over yourself to make the impression that you appreciate them and are happy to serve them. The town needs to spend some money cleaning up and rebuilding the town itself. Parts of town looked like I could have been walking in one of the many '3rd world' countries I have visited again. The antique look is in but it can't be falling down in disrepair. That goes for the few fast food places too, old and run down buildings need to be updated. At least America still needs coal, so the mines will continue on, for as long as the coal last anyway. See you around BSG, I'll come back and check up on you again some day. Until that day comest my next few vacation weeks will be spent some place else.

Name: You don't need my name Again CommentsI just wanted to thank Sheila (Stanley) Kilgore for her wonderful comments to my comment. I am honored to see that someone finally feels the way I do about that issue. I honestly believe everyone is blind sided and feel that it's okay for kids to drink, smoke, and do things not acceptable AS long AS they aren't doing it in public. Well, I have news for you this town isn't perfect and kids will be kids whether you want them in your town or not they are here. My suggestion to the council is DO something about it. Your actions speak louder than your comments so DO something about it. The kids are bored here so fix the problem and STOP making it worse. Look around people after High School how many kids honestly stay here? NOT many that's for sure. That's either A) because they don't want to leave, B) THEY can't afford it. or C) Have a job and are happy here. The rest Leave and how many actually return? Probably not that many. Yeah well, sorry to burst your bubble but I'm sure that half of you reading this don't care because as I mentioned in my previous post this town doesn't seem to be "kid friendly" sad BUT true! Again I would like to challenge town council to get their act together and STOP fighting over stupid things. You are a board ELECT by the people so it's time that you start AGREEING on things and PASS things for the CHILDREN of this town. You are adults so START acting like it. I believe that if more people in this town would love and speak out for the children we'd have a much better community. Another fact once all the elderly die and you have no children left YOUR TOWN also DIES! Do you elect officials even take that into consideration? Didn't think so. Well, that is all I have to say for now. Remember that the local town council election is almost upon us. ASK questions and vote for the QUALIFIED candidate NOT the well know one. That is EXACTLY why we are in this situation in the 1st place.

Name: Sheila (Stanley) Kilgore CommentsIn response to You don't need my name's comment..I TOTALLY AGREE...Just incase people do not realize TIMES HAVE CHANGED well accept Big Stone Gap anyway..I remember when you were able to cuise town and stay out a lil bit later than 6pm..The roads here now close at 6pm no matter what day of the week..And to answer Lula's comment..BORED IS WHEN KIDS HAVE NOTHING TO DO...AND THAT GOES FOR ALL KIDS BIG AND SMALL. A lot of kids around here have jobs and help people out but after that is finished what else is there to do...And you don't need to know my name is right..this is nothing but a retirement town...and that is the way town counsel, town manager, the mayor anyone who has anything to do with running the town want it...and until they wake up and realize there are a lot of kids in this town and just stop saying the kids are the future of Big Stone Gap i guess the kids are going to keep getting in trouble hooked on drugs, alcohol and whatever else comes to mind. These kids need more to do than just go to school, HELP PEOPLE OUT as lula suggested.. Wake up lady and get out of the stoneage kids want a life to do some of they things that interest them not just want parents or people who run the town want them to do......

My family moved to NC when I was young but we visited the Gap every summer till I was 17 or 18. I miss it greatly and my Grandparents have passed over and their beautiful huge house near Bullett Park has long since been sold out of our family. I would love to visit the house I spent allmy childhood summers in just 1 more time! Maybe I will get to someday. My Grandparents were Lawerence and Eula Wells and my Dad was Gene Wells. We still have relatives in the Gap and in the Valley and hope to visit them as soon as possible! Tammie Wells Schaaf

Name: Everetta Hall Boyd CommentsI have been trying to locate a friend who lived near my grandmother and my aunt and uncle in the Beverly Hills section of Wise, VA, but his family moved to Big Stone Gap around 1965 or 1966. Does anyone know how I could contact Bill Sturgill?
Name: YOU DON'T Need my name.... CommentsThis is in response to Lula Baxley’s comment...1st off I have lived in BSG my entire life....and there has NEVER been anything in BSG to interest my boredom. I would like to ask you the question where on earth have you been hiding at.....under a ROCK? can't you see that there is NOTHING for the children to do besides sit at home and play video games. Our lovely town council and their lovely ordinances and curfews they make take everything that children try to do away from them. Besides The Park and the hs and park and rec teams honestly lady what else is there to do in this town for the children please answer me that? You’re probably one of these people who are blindsided too that think children should be stuck at home with a list of things to occupy them besides having real fun. Please this town has never had the children in mind and they never will. This is a town for elderly and retiring seniors and one day it’s going to collapse and people will look back and say what did we do wrong then I can say well I told you so. Thanks for allowing me to express my thoughts/opinions. Have a lovely day!
Name: Myron P CommentsNice town, plan to visit in the near future.See you folks soon.

Name: Ray Levitt CommentsPleased to find this web site it has brought back some very happy memories. I visited your town back in 1984 when I was an engineer installing the first longwall at the Bullet mine, is it still open? I met some great people and had a wonderful time, I could have stayed forever. Larry, Benny, Bear, Robert, and a sassy gal called Jenny are just a few I recall, I hope their still OK, God bless em all, you will always be in my heart, my very best wishes,Ray Levitt
Name: Lula Baxley CommentsI have just finished scanning the Big Stone Web site, and find it very sad that there are some so disenchanted with Big Stone and the area. I really don't know exactly what BORED means, but I think it means we have no creativity, and that we have to be entertained. I grew up about two miles from a small town named Stonewall, Oklahoma, and it much smaller than Big Stone. There was Sunday School, Church and Training Union, a small movie house for a few years, baseball, basketball, get-to-gethers at friends homes, going swimming and picnicing in the summer and for the girls lots of sleep-overs at each others homes, with the parents looking in on us frequestly...now that probably doesn't sound very exciting, but I remember having a good time growing up. When I had exhausted all the fun-things, and mentioned there was nothing to do to my mom or dad, they would promptly give me a list as long as my arm, nd then say, "when you are finished, I have another list." Needless to say, I never returned for the second list. So get off your rear-ends, and stale minds and become creative, there are plenty of people who need help in this area, if you run out of fun things to do, put in a long day helping and reaching out to others, and you won't have time to be bored. Get outside yourself, and find an exciting world.
Name: Reba Huff-Austin CommentsI didn't live in Big Stone Gap but visited there a lot. My family and I lived in Stonega. We left in the summer of 1954 just before the new school year began. I saw Paul E. Rier's contribution while surfing. If he is the son of Virginia Rier, who was my first grade school teacher, that would be wonderful. I would like to know if she is still living and maybe contact her. Virginia will forever be a large part of my heart. There is not a day that goes by that I don't remember "home". The lifestyle and the whole aire about it just flows through your veins if you ever lived there for any length of time. My father was Charles Huff and we lived in the Upper Camp on the other side of Callahan Bridge. I wonder if anyone remembers Lizzie Avery-Livingston. She was my grandmother and was pretty well known. I just want to say that I love this site and might become a frequent visitor.
Name: Russ Fig CommentsIf you really want to take a walk down memory lane check out the many pictures on Classmates.com for Big Stone Gap High School, Powell Valley High School, Big Stone Gap Elementary School, Appalachia High School and East Stone Gap High School. I have spent a lot of time scanning yearbooks and senior pictures for people to enjoy. You may be able to locate photos of your parents, grandparents or even great-great grandparents and other relatives. Enjoy !!! PVHS Class of 1975

Name: Brenda Croan CommentsJust had a wonderful trip visiting my hometown of Saltville, Virginia, and also Bigstone Gap where some of my friends live. While in Bigstone my husband Charlie and I visited the mother of a good friend of mine. My friend's name is Adriana Trigiana. Her mother's name is Ida Trigiana. Adriana's mother took us on a tour of her beautiful home where Adriana grew up. She also sent us down the road from her to visit another nice lady. Her name is Iva Lou Johnson who happens to be one of Adriana's characters in her novel about Bigstone Gap. Like all the rest of the people from Bigstone "I can't wait to see her movie." While in my hometown I met with another person who's in the news these days. Steve "Chicken" Morris. He will be in the new Survivor China that will air this month on tv. He also informed me he is also a cast member on "The Adventures of the Real Beverly Hillbillies" soon to air. My cousin M.C.Tolbert who pastors a church there in Bigstone was kind enough to play us a few tunes on his Banjo. Our trip was very enjoyable in your hometown. Thank you, Brenda Croan Fillmore, Indiana Saltville, Virginia's Original "Salt Mountain Girl"
Name: PAULA HALL CommentsGood Evening Everyone, I am searching for a John D. Warf. I have been told that he was from Big Stone Gap. He was in the Air Force and told he was a good ballplayer. Also that he got out of the Air Force and went to play up in Pittsburgh, Pa as a pitcher. Left there and I think went back into the service. While in the Air Force, he was stationed over at Chelveston RAF Base near Rushden, England. There is a site www.rushden.org and that is a picture of John D. Warf in the GI photo section. His name is spelled wrong in that phote. I have orders with his exact name on it... He is in the section of GI Friends- Know Anyone? In the picture with John D Warf is Frenchie and Bill Scheffel. He also had a knickname of "Clem". My husband Jim Hall was over there with him... Thanks and Have a Great Day. Hope someone out there knows where he is now. Paula
Name: Samuel (Day) Reasor CommentsI grew up around Big Stone along with my brothers and sisters. Still go there every year for vacations and family reunions. Plan to build another small home up there where my mothers home still stands on my fathers farm
Name: Daniel Connelly CommentsI once knew a man from Big Stone Gap. He and I served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps. His name is Charles Langrel. I first met Charles while attending training at Fort Monmouth N. J. He and I were stationed at Sinop Turkey in the early Sixties. We were friends but I have not seen or heard from him in all these years. BSG is an inviting looking community from what I am able to discern from this web site. If ever I should come by this area I will be sure to stop.
Name: Madonna Kay Browe CommentsI was born in Big Stone Gap Virginia in 1981 at the Lonesome Pine Hospital. I come up through there sometimes when I go visit my grandparents on Jenkins Kentucky. I Think it is really great that I can get on the internet and look up where I was born and learn stuff about it.
Name: Gabriel Shupe CommentsI love Big Stone Gap a nice place to live I born and raised here thank u for a great southwest va town
Name: Harold CommentsI agree with sheila (below) there's noting for young kids here except for highschool sports. what about the other kids who dont make the team, or not into sports or the band? wouldnt a boys/girls club of some kind add flavor to this hole in the mountain? no? well they will find something to do then, probably drugs. and its our grandkids thats gonna be subject to it even worse a few yrs from now. all these people movin in because of the new prision are alot of drug dealears & city people who have no morals & their kids are irresponsible, rude, have no heart, and just plane brats & some are drug dealers. ya better wake up BSG, we will loose someting soon if this place dont change.
Name: Pete H. Felts CommentsWas raised in the Wildcat
Name: Charles E. Miller CommentsI recently signed a petition against the present water rate increase. I do support a increase and the amount is up to council, I know the water fund is in need of monies and repairs. The reason i object to the current increase is it did not include a way to ajust the rate for those at the lower end of the income scale. While I and most in the town can afford this type of increase those on incomes fixed at less than $1000 a month find it very hard to make it without the increase. I think a way of determing those who need it should have some type of adjustment. This I believe needs some thought.

Name: Barbara Mumpower Young CommentsI just spent the last six months in the Gap. Two days after returning to Madison, I was homesick for BSG. I want to thank the BSG Fire Department and all the other friends of my dad, Spec, for all you did for him and helped to make my days easier while I there with him those last months. Thanks to the town council for the recognition of his service to the town. He loved Big Stone Gap and the wonderful people who call BSG home.
Name: Larry Cannon CommentsMy mother was Jeanette Huff. The Huff's owned a farm just outside of BSG.Ishmael Huff Sr lived and died on that farm, Ishmael Huff Jr did the same and was the last Huff to live on the farm. Both came to BSG from time to time. My Mother married a Kenneth "Neeni" Bruner of BSG and I am searching for any of the Bruner family that was related to Kenneth. My mother died in 1972 and was burred in the Huff family plot as "Jeanette Bruner", rightly so. But the cause of her death and many other questions are un-answered. If you are related to Kenneth Bruner or knew Jeanette (Huff) Bruner please contact me. Who know's we're probably related (by marriage)!

Name: LISA BAKER CommentsI grew up in Big Stone and moved away because there were better job opportunities and more money elsewhere. Is there not baseball and softball leagues there to keep kids busy during the summer and basketball, football, and volleyball for fall and winter. They don't have to be for school teams, kinda like rec teams to keep busy and have fun. The school teams are usually for the really serious players and the rec. teams are usually for fun and keep you busy. That's what a lot of the kids around town down here do now. They do soccer, softball baseball, basketball, volleyball, basketball. Is there a YMCA around Big Stone Gap now? I can't remember if there was one when I was growing up or not. The one down here has soccer fields, basketball courts, and an indoor pool. Also, what happened at the Park?
Name: Nicolette McElyea (Coates) CommentsJust wanted to say hello to everyone from the class of 98. I now live in Florida with my 7 year old daughter. Hope everyone is well.

Name: Marvin W. Shortt CommentsI was born and lived in Cadet. Still visit BSG often to visit a brother, two sisters, and lots of friends.
Name: Alyssa Berthelsen CommentsJust wanted to say that i miss living down there. It is the most beautiful area i have lived in.
Name: Sheila (Stanley) Kilgore CommentsI have lived in Big Stone Gap most of my life since graduating PVHS in 1995. Used to there were things for kids to do here. Now there is nothing. People around here complain about the kids here being on drugs but nothing is done about it. Each time the kids in this town actually find something to do like skateboarding, game rooms, whatever, something always happens that they get shut down or it is fixed to where they can no longer do anything. All kids around here have to do is sit in the house watching tv. There is nothing here for them to do and when they get in trouble because when they do find something to do it is most of the time illegal, or they get grawled out for doing it whatever it may be. Look if you want the kids around here to stay out of trouble and drug free. GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO DO. MAKE A PLACE HERE JUST FOR KIDS. You just might see a big difference in them.
Name: Christine Smaltz CommentsJust finished reading all 3 BSG novels. Feel like I know the place. Originally from PA. Have never visited your area, but will try next time I'm up that way.

Name: michael forrestal CommentsI had a relative who lived in town Dillard & Crystal Ball. We used to visit Big Stone Gap when I was a little kid. Fond memories. Uncle Dillard owned the movie house. He took us up into the mtns. to look for snakes. He would catch one and scare us with it.
Name: Frank E. Graham Jr. CommentsMy great grandfather, Frank Preston Graham, and his brother William each raised families in the Big Stone Gap area in the late 1800's . They both had orchard farms on what I believe is now called Williams Hollow Road (now enormously changed from the good old days). My grandfather, John E. Graham was born there in 1895 and graduated from High School in Big Stone Gap. When he was 92 I took him for his last visit to the old home place. We had an emotional visit to an old family graveyard just off Pennington Gap road. Grandpa lived to be 97 years old. I'm searching for any information to be found from the early twentieth century on any of these Graham folks. My father, Frank E. Graham recently passed away at the age of 85. Just before his passing we took a nostalgic trip to Big Stone Gap and were once again awestruck by the beauty and grandeur of the area. The trip triggered many deep memories from Dad's early childhood dating from the 1920's an 1930's. I was unable to locate the old family grave yard. Any information (or coaching on how to find information)relating to family and/or local history from the early to mid-twentieth century would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Name: Brenda Blakey CommentsI've traveled through Big Stone Gap a few years back. I'm a native of Virginia and was born in the small town of Saltville. In a nearby hollow known as Buckeye. I have become acquainted with Big Stone's well known author, Adriana Trigiani. She is the greatest and we have lots of things in common. I have also written three books for my hometown. I have been designated as my hometown's "Salt Mountain Girl." My cousin, M.C. Tolbert and his wife Anna just recently moved to Big Stone from Georgia. He is the minister of a church there. Thanks so much. My email is.....saltmnt.girl@sbcglobal.net Brenda Blakey

I would love to visit someday. Anyone who lives there is so lucky I say. Enjoy. :-)

The museum was closed, resting on Popular Hill The snow was falling and the town completely still. At the stroke of midnight, the mansion shook to its core, And through the mystery of Christmas it was nineteen sixty four. Forty years gone in a flash as time turned inside out. The night sparkled with miracles and magic was all about. I could see all over town…. the Trail Theatre, the Country Boy Pool, The Wildcat, Cadet, Southern, Mike’s, Jack’s and Carmine’s too. There was Powell Valley Drive-in and Crackers Neck And down by the high school stood old St. Nick. The students were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of presents danced in their heads. With mid-term finals just one week away The teachers had the tests all stacked in their sleigh. When out in the parking lot there rose such a clatter I jumped to my feet to see what was the matter. I ran to the window quick as a flash Tore open the shutter and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave a luster of midday to the objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should I see But eight of my teachers with a huge Christmas tree. Mr. Horton was out in front, so lively and quick I knew in a moment he was dressed as old St. Nick. More rapid than eagles, his courses he came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now Broadwater! Now Brooks! Now Dingus! Now Darnell! On Raines! On Read! On McChesney and Stallard too! To the top of the porch! To the upstairs hall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! As quick as bunnies they scurried along, Cheering and laughing and singing their song. They were pulling a sleigh filled to the top And by each class room they skidded to a stop. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on each desk The crackling of paper as he threw down the test. His eyes… how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, His clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of exams he had flung on his back, He looked like a peddler just opening his pack. He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard them exclaim, before they drove out of sight Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night. My apologies to Clement Clark Moore Ernest Kelly Dec3, 2004

And be sure to watch for her book signing tour dates at a town or city near you. That's an event you don't want to miss!!! I waited 4 hours to get my books autographed and it was "time well spent". BDC, there is alot to do here, its just there's not
alot of places to hang out. I agree BSG needs something, but on other hand , it
allways brings the dirty birds with it, lotsa drugs float in & then ya got a
mess. So ya gonna have to get creative & find something to do on your own. Drugs
dont just destroy the person, but the families, the hang out spots, the towns,
counties, and in the end there is 2 proven realities for drug users who dont
find rehab, 1 the grave or Jail.

Mr. polly on wcyb asked why anyone would do this? well Geoge, fact is there are some ya-hoo's who are out to do nobody any good. If you hate the town so much why dont you LEAVE it and not say all of those mean things about it? Then after you have been away for a long time then you will look back and Appreciate it more like some of the rest of us :).There are a lot of jobs there in the County since I was there. You shouldnt be bored with all that the counties around there have to offer now. There was nothing but the Coalmines and railroad years back and jobs were hard to get unless you went to college.I hope you get a better outlook on life when you are older and learn to appreciate the town more.. So why is it the citizens fault again that they let the water out TOO MUch TOO soon? Wow make ya wanna get out & VOTE huh?
Name: Miranda CommentsI came to this site to see what was going on in the town and boy did i get a shocker..The only solution to knowing what is going on in the town is to attend concil meeting and voice your concerns and lets try to find solutions that benifit all who call BIG STONE GAP home. I am sure the town managers would appreciate all the open input to help the town to be a better place to live...Come let us reason together.
Name: Curious Citizen CommentsHow come it took so long for Big Stone to publicly thank the VA National Guard? Why is every town employee that I have spoken with saying that BSG is paying for the Guard to be here, when the Governors office confirms that the state is picking up the tab? When will reports from the leased purification units be made available to the public, not just a quote from someone? I would really like to see the log files in a newspaper. I understand (may be wrong) that they are not getting the full 1 million gallons per day. I would also like to see how much down time each unit has had. One last thing, why did BSG offer to host the National Guard at its annual Christmas party when it is the day they are to leave? Hmmm Just curious.

Name: Someone from the sidelines... CommentsCurious, and Furious citizens: Can I ask you a question? Have you been to town hall to see what water conservation measures the staff at town hall are using? I have been in the men's restroom, and my wife has been in the women's. All of the running water to the sinks has been turned off, and alcohol gel is provided for sanitation. There is only one toilet available in the men's restroom, and in the women's as well. I don't know about you folks, but I don't like the idea of forcing the Town of Big Stone Gap's elderly, disabled, and handicapped being forced to the stinky confines of a porta-potty. Use some sense before you criticize. Put yourself in the shoes of the people who run the town before you make critical comments. If I worked there, I would probably be upset that people think I am living a double standard. This water shortage affects everyone.

But I heard them exclaim, before they drove out of sight Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night

Name: Curious Citizen CommentsNow Furious Citizen, You know that the town council & the employee's are on a different set of rules & standards, I mean can you imagine George, Or Chuck in a porta-potty? What would the world come too? I mean we gotta keep it real, we are after all only Citizens, & not official's. I gotta Idea, we need to run for council, fire everbody we can, & hire some common folks, kinda like the early americans getting rid of King George's rule. <<<<<<<< LOL , sad but true.
Name: Furious citizen CommentsI have a ? How come that during our current water crisis everyone in town has portapottys with the exception of town hall. even the banks that only employ a handfull of people have them yet the town does not. Talk about a bad example. I think that our town employees should have to conserve just as much. After this they will probably add portapottys just for show. another thing is I bet the town mayor and others still carry on with their usual water consumption. their water bills will be proof. I love big stone gap and am tired of stuff going on in town. I also happen to know that they wasted money training a new fire marshall only to cut him out of thier next budget, if they were going to do this then why waste lots of money for the training. I need answers.
Name: Curious Citizen CommentsI'm curious, is the walking bridge that was promised to be build at the park that crosses over to avaition Rd. ever going to be built? And is there any safety concerns about the green belt walking trail? I know alot of teens hang out in spots there, it was worse before they put the water pumps at the tennis courts. Thanks

Name: Dan Hill, LTC, US Army, Retired CommentsThis is for the postings of Concerned Citizens regarding the proposed tax increase. I am not sure of the situation on the tax increase, but from readiing their emails, it is obvious that the money being spent there on the schools is not being well used. To see the incorrect grammer and misspellings, it is clear that these people need additional schooling. As for the situation cited where "there is nothing to do" in the town, I say that there is plenty to do: volunteer, join groups that want to improve the situation rather than wait for someone else to do it. Quit crying about how bad you have it and make positive things happen. And get an education. You will be totally surprised at what happens when you open your minds.

charlotte payne towers CommentsI spent my honeymoon at the appalachia hotel in 1962,I had my hair done at the beauty parlor in the hotel. we went to the country boy drive-in and the greasy spoon and had chili hotdogs...so good!. We went to see Ikey Sykes up in Inman holler, and Sally Robbins, my new grandmother-in-law. We ate the best buttermil bisquits this side of Heaven, cooked on her big old wood burning stove with the copper water heater on the side. Her daughter Gladys Ruby married Garland Payne. her sisters name was Pearl. The payne family at that time was Gladys and Garland, their children: Shirley,Elvin,Robert,Nelle,Hubert,Eddie,Ruth, thelma, Larry and Roger. William Tipton Payne was Garland payne's father. They had good friends named Maude Kilgore. Mr.Payne's sister Minnie lived over in KY. and Mag and Luck lived in Harlan co. I believe, then the flood came through there washed out a lot of people. I love Big STone Gap and always look forward to the Tri-State Singing Convention 2nd Sunday in June. Nell married Roy Peeler and moved to Cowpens,SC Thelma married Tommy Flynn and lives in Harpers Ferry WVa. lost track of Shirley, I think she lives in SC, Hubert, Elvin , Ruth all live in Baltimore, Roger lives in Florida near Disney World, lost track of Larry. Name: Nick CommentsThis is regard to the BSG police departments use of a scrambled radio frequency. First of all you don't just use any frequency you want without FCC approval. There are strict guidlines on what frequencies can be used due to interference with others using frequencies near the same bandwidth. Bleed over can easily occur if you don't manage this carefully. Second, scrambling a frequency doesn't affect that frequency or any others as long as the frequency has already been approved for use in a location (i.e. it won't interfere because no one is working any frequency within bleedover tollerance and besides a scambled frequency just sounds like noise). Scrambleing occures all the time. HBO, SHOWTIME, Ect scrambles thier transmissions to keep un-authorized users from watching thier shows. And third. The cost difference between radio's that can or cannot scramble is minimal compared to the security concerns in todays world. Would you want the burgular that just broke into your house to know that the police is waiting for them outside. This might make them decide to stay a while. Besides, more radio's are purchased with scramble ablility now than without it so the prices have came down tremendously. How do I know this stuff. I deal with it daily in my job.
Name: concerned citizen CommentsOk this comment is for the person named "midnite", how about you get your facts straight before you go accusing the police department of doing things "illegally" as you so called stated. I am sure that the FCC knows that they are using a scrambled channel, and if they are, why are you so concerned about it? Have you been doing wrong and afraid now that you can't hear them coming after you? It is people like yourself that makes other people not enjoy living here. If you have such a problem with it, why don't you go to the police department and see what they have to say. You know why you won't cause you are afraid and want to hide behind you lil posting on here.

Name: nitemare Commentsbig stone gap scrambled channel is uncalled for...wonder how much the town had to pay for new radios per vehicle and i also wonder if they have FCC approval to use it and the frequency that it is on...another waste of town funds spent on uneeded items. no other town in the county has scrambled channels, whats make BSG think their special???

We made a lot of good friends including Pastor Mutter, Mayor Cole, George Polly, Joyce Page, Barbara Polly, Ben Allen, Jack Mack and so many more. The family hated to say good bye to Big Stone but work opportunities took us elsewhere. I miss the chance to be in the Trail of the Lonesome Pine. I miss Double Kwik hotdogs, Chinese food at the Red Flower, Bullit Park, and PV football. Reading the Big Stone Gap novels and knowing where Big Cherry Hollow is. You have a great little town and I hope to come back and visit from time to time. Don't let the nay sayer on the town council ever get a majority, it would set the town back 50 years.

Name: Pam Brooks CommentsAbout Dec 1978? my family came upon a wreck. A boy and his Dad were moving to Bluefield, where the "Granddaddy" lived. It was raining and cold and at night. We had temp. moved to NE and was on our way home to NC for Christmas. The boy was ok, but Dad seriously injured. Boy had climbed up side of mtn. to get help. I was 11. He was a little younger than me. My Mom said it was on the "main road" through Tennessee. Best I can figure, since we were coming from NE and going to NC and he was going from TN to Bluefield, then maybe around Johnson City? I have wanted all these years to find out the ending. When rescue arrived the boy got out of our station wagon and with rescue and we never got their names. Want very much to find them. Pam "Thornton".
Name: Concerned Citizen CommentsOkay since my 1st message didn't get posted I guess I will try again. I know this is just a waist of my time cause you already have your agenda and you're going to stick to it reguardless of what I or anyone else has to say. I don't see any reason why you the town council see the need to have a tax increase. You need to manage your money and reduce waistful spending. For one the town manager in this town is way over paid and for what? All he does is sit there and I see no new businesses in this town..I see nothing for the youth to do... I see nothing for the elderly. No wonder kids are on drugs, wild, and doing who knows what cause they have nothing in this deadbeat town to do. Say what you want but it's time we wake up and face the facts! The tax increase will only HURT the citizens in this town. We are taxed enough. The people who live outside corporation limits have everything that we have with the exception of garbage removal and they don't have to deal with this. We the people put you in this office and I tell you one thing we can take you out of that office. When you took that position you took on the position to listen to the people not to just sit back and go with the flow. I for one believe that the people have spoken and you need to respect that. When you run everything out of this town its your own fault. We need more things in this town instead of a tax increase. When people have to choose if they are going to pay bills or buy medicine it's time you realize everyone isn't made of money. There are NO jobs in this town for people and it's hard to raise a family on a fixed income. I will continue to tell you how I feel until my comments are posted on this website. JUST SAY NO to the tax increase!!!!!

Name: concerned citizen! CommentsWE DO NOT NEED A TAX INCREASE IN THIS TOWN! WE ARE TAXED TO DEATH IN ENOUGH THE WAY IT IS! OUT OF TOWN CITIZENS PAY ONLY 5 DOLLARS FOR A DECAL AND YET WE ARE FORCED TO PAY 25 DOLLARS WHY? And the police don't actually enforce that. There are more people who don't buy them that do and that's just not right! AND people who live outside the limits GET ALL OF THE SAME SERVICES WE DO TOO WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GARBAGE PICK UP. I THINK IT'S A SHAME WE LIVE INSIDE TOWN LIMITS AND ARE TAXED TO DEATH THE PEOPLE OUTSIDE SHOULD BE THE ONES TAXES NOT US! WE NEED SOME CHANGE ON OUR TOWNCOUNCIL AND WE NEED A NEW TOWN MANAGER CAUSE THERE ISN'T NOTHING NEW COMING TO THIS TOWN AND I FOR ONE DON'T BLAME THEM. THIS TOWN HAS NOTHING FOR THE YOUTH OR FOR SENIOR CITIZENS.AND if you make taxes go up even higher some seniors will really have it even harder to manage what little money they get. Do you really care? NOPE! Whatever you want you do reguardless! This town is ON IT'S WAY TO BECOMING A GHOST TOWN. I CERTAINLY DON'T BLAME PEOPLE FOR MOVING OUT OF THIS TOWN ONCE THEY REACH THE AGE THEY CAN DO SO. I JUST THOUGHT I WOULD LEAVE MY REACTION TO THE TAX INCREASE BECAUSE EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT IT WILL ONLY HURT THIS TOWN AND RUN ALL THE BUSINESS IN TOWN OUT. I THINK THAT THE COUNCIL SHOULD WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT WE DON'T NEED A TAX INCREASE!!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. IT'S NOT GOING TO DO ANY GOOD THOUGH BUT I TRIED!

I am the granddaughter of Maude Estelle Rogers Flanary (she was the daughter of Sheridan and Fannie Rogers (Fannie's maiden name was Miller). Name: Carol (Vaughn) Schmidt CommentsHow wonderful to find this Website! My mother and her 7 sisters were born and raised in Cadet Section of Big Stone Gap. Their wonderful family has spread throughout the U.S. sharing the blessings of the DeBords unique sense of humor and kindness. We all have delightful memories of this quaint little village nestled in the Virginia Mountains. We go back to visit often and relive the days of crusing the "Country Boy" and then to Pennington Gap for those famous "chili dogs". We can still hear A.J. playing his guitar on the Tignor's porch and recall the magical display of the lighting bugs dancing in the corn. The sweet smell of the honeysuckle and dogwood added to the beautiful images painted forever in our minds. I have read all of Ms. Trigiani's book with glee. But unless you 've been there, words alone could never tell of the warmth , beauty and charm of this seemingly forgottn treasure. I would enjoy hearing from anyone that remembers our family. I was the little one with black hair that spend most of her day in Grandma Quinnies back yard mimosa tree. I am still a tomboy but have gray hair don't climb as well now. May God bless you and our wonderful little town.

Name: Christina Crabtree Dutton CommentsHey everyone!! Now I wish I hadn't got on the site, I want to come home! This is the longest we haven't been home in all of my life, but we'll see everyone in June. I have neighbors from New York, they couldn't believe that Big Stone had a web site, they thought we had out-houses when I would try to explain our town. Now they think it is beautiful and want to come see the mountains. I would like to see more updated pictures, esp. of wood avenue where I lived. Love the old pictures,I always wanted to know what the old school looked like.If anyone would like to e-mail me that knows me, feel free to do so. I miss the mountains, but can't say I miss the cold 78 down here. Love to all, especially my family and friends.
Name: Eddy Giles CommentsI believe that everyone on the Council is in agreement that something will be done to honor the Veterans. The Mayor has established a Task Force which will be approved tonight to look into the matter. I would like to go ahead and look into what needs to be done to name the bridge and then pursue other things as well. Maybe you should come to the Council Meeting sometime and express your thoughts.
Name: Henry Clay CommentsWell, I still see nothing has been done in the re-naming of the Veterans' Memorial Bridge ya know some of these people can't just sit here and wait patiently. You know it's been OVER a month and something should've been done by now. You can have a no noise ordinance, and a no cruising law but you can't re-name a little bridge. That's just low. We put you the council in this job to serve us the citizens of this town the ones who pay taxes and reside in this place called Big Stone Gap. I honestly believe that the memebers of this council need to put their differances aside and actually do something helpful to our community. These veterans' are well respected people who fought for freedom. Freedom isn't free and I believe we need to honor these people as fast as we can because they aren't going to be alive forever to see how we show our respect to them. Also, John Doe's comment struck my eye if this town actually had more things for teenagers and young adults to do then they wouldn't be in half the trouble they are, on drugs, and in trouble with the law. I believe it's time something is done in this place. No wonder when people graduate they leave this area. I know I don't want to raise my family in a town that has nothing for them to do. It's a shame that you people can't wake up and see there is NOTHING here for the youth to do.

Name: John Doe CommentsThis town may be beautiful but it is very boring here. Nothing for the kids to do that's why that they stay in trouble because nothing new and exciting ever comes to this town. It's a shame that kids can't have nothing to do in this town. Reminds me of the communist government taking over in this small little town.
Name: j. quick Commentssounds beautiful there.

Name: Janie Price (Gardner) CommentsMy Mom and Dad both are originally from the Big Stone area. My Mom was Gladys Clark Gardner and my Dad was Robert C. Gardner. We still have some relatives living in the area. Some around Appalachia and Roda.
Name: Eddy Giles CommentsI am a member of the Town Council and something will be done to honor the Veterans. The Mayor has established a Task Force to look into what will be done. The Mayor is a retired military person as is another council member. I asked at the last council meeting on Feb 8, about naming the bridge and doing something else to. Something will be done. I have found that things cannot be accomplished immediately. Just be patient.
Name: Stephen M Bledsoe Commentsmy grandfather Steve Bledsoe was born in or around the Big Stone Gap area in 1900 so any Bledsoe living in the area might be a relative

Name:
Ben Collins CommentsMy previous post should read wife or husband and kids. I have served with many fine men and women in the US Navy. I would want to leave the ladies out.
Name: Ben Collins CommentsSpeaking as a vet and a former resident of Cadet I can say it doesn't bother me that the bridge doesn't get renamed. In fact it doesn't bother me at all. The best way to support a vet is find the wife or kids of one serving on active duty now and see what you can do for them.
Name: Rand Holyfield aka Randy Maddux CommentsHey Ya'll ANYbody out there that knows or knew me please send me an E-Mail. I'd love to hear from ya.
Name: Jase CommentsIt really bothers me that the town council wouldn't even pass a renaming of Cadet Bridge to Veterans Memorial. This just shows that these members of the council could careless about the bravery and hard work that our Veterans have fought for this wonderful country that we live in. It's a shame that you people don't respect these great people enought to name a brige after their efforts.
Name: PV Fan CommentsBy MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Julius Jones was 18 before he slept in his own bed. With five sisters and an older brother, 1,200 square feet didn't go very far. Long before the Cowboys rookie burst onto the scene last month as the team's newest hope at running back, Jones was a self-described "country boy" from this small mining town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. How two boys from one family in Big Stone Gap (population 5,906) grew up to become starting running backs in the NFL is a story of great sacrifice. From the time they were in grade school, Julius and older brother Thomas, who plays for the Chicago Bears, told their parents they would someday make them rich. Julius hadn't arrived yet when his mother, Betty, already a 27-year-old mother of three, and his father, Thomas, applied for jobs in the local coal mines. The doctor administering Betty's physical quipped, "You're not going to be able to wear those high heels down there." Betty and Thomas – or "Big Thomas" as locals refer to him – tucked their kids in bed each night and then slipped off to work the "hoot owl" shift at separate mines. "The money was too good to pass up," Betty said of the almost $250-a-week increase from her secretary job. "And it was a way to keep food on the table." Thomas was laid off a year later, but Betty stayed on with the Westmoreland Coal Co. for 19 years. Thomas, who took on a variety of jobs to support the family, caught on as a part-time news anchor at the NBC affiliate in Bristol, Va., about 65 miles away. He had just wrapped up the 11 p.m. newscast on Aug. 14, 1981, when he found out Betty had delivered twins two minutes apart. He "broke quite a few laws" racing home to welcome Julius and Knetris into the world. Their mother returned to operating heavy equipment in the mines a few weeks later. Into the mines Betty's father and father-in-law, who spent a combined 87 years in the coal mines, begged Betty not to follow. A woman, they said, had no business doing a man's work. She ignored their advice. "Thomas and I decided it was the best thing for our family," said Betty, 52. "And that was the end of the discussion." On her first day on the job, Betty told another female miner that she would never return if she somehow "got out alive." "I was scared to death," she said. "But my friend convinced me to at least give it one week." By the time Julius was old enough for school, Betty was working the 8 a.m.-4 p.m. shift. He used to close his eyes in Diane Bruner's American history class at Powell Valley Middle School and pray for his mom's safety. "I remember some of my friends getting called out of class," Julius said. "Either their parents had been seriously injured or killed in the mines." Before each shift, Betty and some of her co-workers joined hands at the mouth of one of the deep mines and prayed for safety. Then they climbed into something resembling a golf cart and descended 10 miles into the kind of darkness "that you can't describe until you've been there." "Once they let you off down there, you couldn't go out for a sandwich," said Thomas, 53. Thomas and Betty knew the risks. And Betty had several close calls. One night, the roof collapsed in an area she had just left. The ground quaked under her as she watched a storm of rocks 15 feet away. "I just got to the point where I said, 'If it's my time to go, I'll go,' " said Betty, whose calloused hands are the only evidence of all those years. Julius said his mom's job drove Thomas and him to be successful. "It bothered us all that our mom was down there," said Julius, the Cowboys' second-round draft choice out of Notre Dame. "But she had to make a living somehow." Julius carves own path From the time he could walk, Julius followed his big brother, Thomas, everywhere. He couldn't stand it when Thomas was able to play "Peanut" league football before him. John F. Rhodes / DMN Betty and Thomas A. Jones, parents of Cowboys running back Julius Jones, have come a long way from their 1,200 square-foot home for nine. And that's part of the reason Big Thomas and Betty "fudged" Julius' age so he could start playing when he was 7. Julius, three years younger than Thomas, was part of the "Crunch Bunch" that played during halftime of the regular games. Bob Herron coached Thomas and Julius when they played for the Chargers. He remembers watching Julius return a kickoff for a touchdown at Notre Dame. "It was like he was back at Bullitt Park," Herron said of the local park where youth league and high school games are played. "None of the other players on the field had a chance to get him." When Big Thomas drove his sons to their Peanut games, Thomas buckled his chinstrap in the car. As cars began to line up along the road to Bullitt Park, Thomas would hop out of the car and sprint the final few blocks to the football field. Julius never budged. "Even then, he didn't want to waste any energy," his father said. "He's just not the type of person who needs much preparation." Thomas, who starred at the University of Virginia, was the extrovert, constantly asking his father questions about football. He knew who the starting running back was at almost every successful college program during his recruitment period. If Julius knew, he didn't tell anyone. In fact, his one-word answers still frustrate his parents at times. "It would be tough to represent him in a court of law," his father said. "He only lets people know what he thinks they need to know. Thomas tells you everything." Julius and Thomas played only one season of high school football together. In 1996, they squared off in the 300 intermediate hurdles during a regional track and field meet. According to Powell Valley High School's longtime football coach, Phil Robbins, Julius had a few steps on Thomas when he decided to pull up near the finish line. "I think Julius thought that might be Thomas' last race," Robbins said. "So he gave up first place." Robbins won two Group A state titles with Thomas at starting running back and two more with Julius. File Thomas Jones (left) and his brother Julius played against each other Thanksgiving Day when Chicago played the Cowboys. Robbins limited Thomas' carries his first two seasons in high school, but he took the opposite approach with Julius. "I was concerned about Thomas being tough enough," said Robbins, "but I couldn't wait to get my hands on Julius." Julius also played safety and had 10 career interceptions. Robbins credits Julius as one of the biggest reasons opposing teams didn't have a carry of more than eight yards during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. "You talk about a missile," Robbins said. "He would nail you." Julius also finished his high school career with back-to-back 300-yard rushing games. According to Robbins, Thomas was the main reason college recruiters found their way to southwest Virginia. And for that reason, Thomas' No. 6 jersey has been retired for almost a decade. "Thomas was a great ambassador for this part of the state," Robbins said. "But Julius is the one who broke down the door at the national level." Said Ida Holyfield, a local newspaper editor: "I think the whole community takes pride in these boys." Former Powell Valley defensive end Matt Coughlin has known Julius since grade school. Coughlin said they cruised downtown Big Stone Gap and the surrounding mountains for fun. He said Julius couldn't go to the Kingsport, Tenn., mall, situated 45 minutes from Big Stone Gap, in high school without someone asking for his autograph. "Everybody knew who he was," Coughlin said. "People have always just flocked to him. Especially the girls." The 'Stonega Stallion' Ask almost anyone in Powell Valley where Thomas and Julius Jones got their athletic ability and they immediately mention Betty's older brother, Ed Clark. Before the Jones boys came along, Clark was the most famous running back to come out of southwest Virginia. His nickname was the "Stonega Stallion," after a coal mining camp where the families of Big Thomas and Betty grew up. Clark was a 6-1, 230-pound running back "with legs of steel" who earned a full ride to Purdue in 1969. Clark couldn't make grades at Purdue and Appalachian State, so he returned home and became a truck driver. Years later, he took one more stab at football and was, according to the Jones family, one of the final cuts at an open tryout for the Washington Redskins. Clark drowned at Boynton Beach, Fla., in 1986 after saving one child and going back in after another. It bothers Thomas and Betty that people in this town focus only on Clark's inability to make it in football. "They only want to talk about the football stuff," said Big Thomas, "but they leave out the part about him being a hero." Downside to fame Thomas and Julius have already accomplished what so many people in this three-stoplight town hoped his uncle would. Big Thomas and Betty now live in a 3,000-square-foot home with a pool and slide in the back yard. Above the mantle hang the pictures of Thomas and Julius and the Jones' five daughters: Gwen, Knetris, Knetta, Katrice and Beatrice. A collection of Cadillac Escalades and oversized pickups are parked out front. This is a far cry from the days when Big Thomas dropped the older kids off at the First Baptist Church in his 1975 Grand Prix. In this predominately white town, the Joneses were the only black members of the church. After dropping the older kids off at church, Thomas drove the four miles back home and retrieved Betty and the younger kids. The Jones family became wealthy overnight when Thomas was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the 2000 NFL draft. He asked his parents whether they wanted a new home with his bonus money. "Yeah, I'm sure," his father told him. "Why are you asking me this?" "Because people will never treat you the same," his son answered. The father said his son's prediction eventually came true. And for that reason, he and Betty will probably leave this place where their families have lived for almost a century once 15-year-old Katrice graduates from high school Big Thomas said he and his family are "received" differently now. Julius knows what his dad is talking about. "I know there are people who resent us for our success," Julius said. "But what are we supposed to do about that?" Big Thomas Thomas Avery Jones is well-rehearsed in describing how his two sons ended up as starting running backs in the NFL. He sounds like a fire and brimstone pastor when he drives home a point. He had a short stint as a radio DJ; he spent a year in the coal mines; he drove 2 1/2 hours three times a week to Knoxville, Tenn., where he was an admissions counselor at the University of Tennessee; and he worked as a corrections officer at one of the state's most notorious prisons. Thomas said he left his job as corrections officer at Wallens Ridge State Prison, Big Stone Gap's largest employer, five years ago, in part, because too many of the inmates knew about his famous sons. "These people still have a lot of contacts on the outside," said the prison's former warden, Stan Young. "And that's why my kids didn't go to school in this town." Thomas has been approached recently about writing a book on parenting. He delivers phrases such as, "The best parent can't be the most popular parent" and "You can't be your child's best friend." But asked if he felt lucky to have two NFL sons, Thomas' smooth, rich voice takes on a defiant tone. "Ain't no luck to it," he said. BIG STONE GAP, VA.
