I have gone back to BSG alot over the past 33 years. My family moved in 1960 to MI and my granny, Sarah Blanton 92, still lives there. I have relatives still in the area and some childhood friends I still keep in touch with. It has changed over the years but what hasn't? I always loved the old school and the wall around it as my granddad, Charles Morefield Jr., helped build it when he was young and worked with his dad. I am always interested in anything about BSG and the area. Thank you.

I am trying to find some information on my family. My mom's name was Minnie Marie Hood Buckman and she died in May of 1964 in New York. She was buried in a paupers grave and later had to be moved to the Lawson Family Cemetary off of Hwy. 23 near Duffield when they put a train track through the grave sites. My grandparents and other Hood family members are buried in the Lawson Family Cemetary as well. I believe my grandfather's name was William Hood and I think that maybe my grandmother's name was Nannie. Does anyone have any information on the Hood family? If so, I would greatly appreciate it. I never knew my mom. She died when I was 4 years old, now I am 43 years old. I have always wanted to know about her family. She has a brother named Curtis Hood that lives in Georgia, also a brother named Bill or William that lives in Florida, and another brother that lives in North Carolina. She had a sister, Jenny or Virginia that lived in Colorado, but she has passed away. Any information on the Hood family would be most welcome. The Lawson Family Cemetary is located near the Robinette Chapel on Hwy. 23. I visited the grave site in 1997 and the beauty of Big Stone Gap just took me away. My husband and I would like to retire there one day.

This is a response to T. Dean, regarding the death of James Boone. I have read of this several times, from several sources. They all seem to agree on the major points. I don't have any begore me right now, but the followin is what I recall: James and several other young men separated from the party to get some livestock (cattle, I believee) at Castle Woods. They weren't far from the rondevous point when darkness overtook them and they had to make camp. During the night they were set upon by a group of hostile Indians, and all were killed but one man, who was a slave. This man ran forward to Daniel's camp, but the rescue party was to late to save anyone. The reports say the graves were hidden to prevent the Indians from returning and defiling the bodies. The various accounts agree the location was near a spring in the Powell Valley, in what is now Lee County. But nothing else is known about it. For many years there has been a dispute between some who say the site was near the present site of Stickleyville, and others who say it was near Rose Hill. The former site is on Walllens Creek, a tributary of the Powell, between Powell Mt. and Wallens Ridge. There was a highway marker there for me years. I don't know if it is still there, or not. The other location would have been nearer Martin's Station, which would have been a logical place for Boone's party to wait for the livestock to catch up. There were supposed to have been a couple of unidentified bodies dug up by a highway construction crew in that vicinity in the fiftys. Some think they may have been from the James Boone party, but no one knows.

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't ever get food poisoning. My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, but I can't remember getting E-coli. As children we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. Our baby cribs, toys and rooms were painted with bright colored lead based paint. We, often chewed on the crib, ingesting the paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes we had no helmets. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. We played dodge ball and sometimes the ball would really hurt. We played with toy guns, cowboys and Indians, army, cops and robbers, and used our fingers to simulate guns when the toy ones or my BB gun was not available. We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda, but we were never overweight; we were always outside playing. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't, had to learn to deal with disappointment. Some students weren't as smart as others or didn't work hard so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. That generation produced some of the greatest risk-takers and problem solvers. We had the freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), the term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system. We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are. Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym. Every year, someone taught the whole school a lesson by running in the halls with leather soles on linoleum tile and hitting the wet spot. How much better off would we be today if we only knew we could have sued the school system. Speaking of school, we all said prayers and the pledge and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention for the next two weeks. We must have had horribly damaged psyches. I can't understand it. Schools didn't offer 14 year olds an abortion or condoms (we wouldn't have known what either was anyway) but they did give us a couple of baby aspirin and cough syrup if we started getting the sniffles. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything. I thought I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself. I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, PlayStation, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital cable stations. I must be repressing that memory as I try to rationalize through the denial of the dangers could have befallen us as we trekked off each day about a mile down the road to some guy's vacant 20, built forts out of branches and pieces of plywood, made trails, and fought over who got to be the Lone Ranger. What was that property owner thinking, letting us play on that lot. He should have been locked up for not putting up a fence around the property, complete with a self-closing gate and an infrared intruder alarm. Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed! We played king of the hill on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48 cent bottle of mercurochrome and then we got our butt spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics and Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked (physical abuse) here too ... and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home. Remember when???? Mom invited the door to door salesman inside for coffee. Kids choked down the dust from the gravel driveway while playing with Tonka trucks (Remember why Tonka trucks were made tough... it wasn't so they could take the rough berber in the family room), Dad drove a car with leaded gas. Our music had to be left inside when we went out to play and I am sure that I nearly exhausted my imagination a couple of times when we went on two week vacations. I should probably sue the folks now for the danger they put us in when we all slept in campgrounds in the family tent. Summers were spent behind the push lawnmower and I didn't even know mowers came with motors until I was 13 and we got one second hand without an automatic blade-stop or an auto-drive. How sick were my parents? Of course my parents weren't the only psychos. I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.. To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly know we needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! HOW DID WE SURVIVE?

Was going thru some family history and Daniel Boone being in one of my family lines...I had ran across the fact that Boone`s oldest son James was killed in Big Stone on Wallens Ridge. While watching a program about Boone the other night on the History Channel, they also stated this fact. Calling the area Powells Valley and that he was killed there...some of the "party" stayed behind to bury James. After Boone and party reached KY and he came back this way on his trek back to N.C. to bring his family to KY. He found that his son had been partially uncovered by animals and that he reburied him there. Is this grave known of there...is it still there or even marked? I was curious because of family records saying this happened on Wallens Ridge. I had wondered if when building the prison there, they had ran across this grave. Or is it even in that general area? Thanks for any info known. Have never heard anyone in this area speak of this grave or accounts of this happening.

Hello Everyone, I started a Yahoo group last year for those who want to come in and visit once in a while with others who love our area but may no longer have the privilege of living there. It is a restricted membership group so if you're interested, just email me, tell me just a little about yourself so that I will know where you're from, and I will send an invitation. It is very small group and has been slow since October. The reason is the restricted membership and I have not been back here to mention it. My AOL address may change but the Yahoo address stays the same so use either. gudgerj6@aol.com jglg55@yahoo.com You would be welcome to join :) Lorene

Can anyone tell me anything about Mary Molly Murphy, Jim Bob Lyle, and Jack McClanahan (we called him Jackie and I think he was my first love)? Does Jack still live in the same house he lived in back in the 50's? The same with Jim Bob. I remember having a mad crush on him, also. I attended BSG Elementary School with them in the mid to late 50's. Mary Molly's parents owned Carmines and they served the best "chilli bun" around. She and I were friends. I received my first exposure to the Catholic church from her. And she would wear her tap shoes to school and run up and down the sidewalk just to hear the noise they'd make. I can't tell you all how many times during my life I have thought of these people and wondered what happened to them? If anyone knows, please, please e-mail me. Thank you.

~*Hey there everyone! I live in Big Stone Gap,Virginia.I was born here. I am now just 13 but I can think of no other place I would rather be! I love it here. It may sound or even be boring at times but I love it here and especially the summers here! Nothing in the world can beat my summers here! I have participated in *The Trail of the Lonesome Pine* State Outdoor Drama Play (that is located here in Big Stone Gap) since the 1998-1999 Cast year! I have participated that year and every year since and I intend to and have every intention of participating this year making it my 5th year and from now on! I love participating in the *Trail*(as the drama Cast and people call it)Everyone there is so close and we are like family and it is really important and special to us and especially during the hard nights and days of rehearsal, before and after the shows, during the shows, going out afterwards, and even getting together after the show has ended for the season, and even *Strike Day* when we have all that work to do cleaning up! I love it there and everyone is REALLY close there and we look out for eachother. We have great times and some of the drama kids even walk down to the Dari Delte for some ice cream or somethin or just a break during rehearsal,or across to the Food-City,who knows dependin on what exactly we are doin,I myself have done that many a time and well we have a good time. *Trail* cast members have had their good times and the really bad and bad *Trail* years and then there are the really good ones. I don't know but I know one particular year will probably remain with me forever and that was the July 2002 Trail Year. I'm not going to get into that but those of the trail cast of that year know why but I am not going to say any thing bout that. I am going to go now but I can't wait until the 2003 *Trail* auditions and summer! Ima go now but if any one from *Trail* would like to email me you can go for it! ~*Kara*~

I was born in Big Stone Gap, VA on November 24, 1949. My parents are Eva Mae McDaniel Edens and Truman Jackson Edens. I have two younger sisters, Billie Joyce and Jackie, and one brother, Jim Jackson. Unfortunately, our daddy died in 1967 and our brother in 1994. Both taken in their late 40's and much too soon. They are sorely missed by my mom, my sisters and me. My mom lives in Hampton, VA. I attended elementary school in BSG; however, we moved to Hampton when I was in the 4th. or 5th. grade. We came back to BSG for many visits because we had such a large family. I haven't been there in many, many years and am looking forward to a family reunion to be held there on July 6th. of this year. If I had my way, I'd move back in a second. As a matter of fact, the house my dad built is still there and I intend on visiting it when I return. I still have many fond memories of my life as a child in BSG. It was a glorious and innocent time in my life. I hope some things have remained as I remember them. Today is the first time I have visited this web site. I'm thrilled it's here and I will continue to visit often. Thank you.

Someone mentioned a teacher, L. Williams. My great Uncle was a Principal in or near BSG . His name was Leonard Williams.I wonder if that could have been the same person? I have been researching my Mother's family in your area. The families are: Williams, Smith, Nichols, Robinett, Cheek, Dickenson. My great uncle had the very first car dealership in BSG - according to him. He was also a big tale spinner. We were never quite sure how much of his tales were true. His name was Edward Williams . His wife was Molly. I went to visit them in 1980. They lived most or all of their lives together in a little house on the side of a hill. They took us to an old log cabin which was in the Nichols family in the late 1800's It was still standing. We went up behind it and found tombstones of family members. I do have pictures. Half of us went home with a few chiggers... We went to a cemetary in town, I don't recall the name - and Uncle Ed told us of his brothers and sisters. My grandmother was Nettye Williams. She married Robert E. Smith. We also found the grave of Jennie Anderson - a long time close friend of our family. We did enjoy our visit there. I may even have a cousin or 2 still there. Anything to add to these bits of information? Please write. Carol Shaw

Found your site while searching for info on a book written by Amelia Townsend. That led me to this site. The book by the way is great & has taught me a lot about my own family. My birth father was the son named Gabe in the story.I have visited this area before & was very pleased with it.Then was happy to discover my own family tree was linked to this area.

26 January 2003 Gentlemen, I am trying to determine the place of birth of my grandfather John Marshall Bailey (21 February 1847-21 December 1935). I inquired at the June Tolliver House but received no reply. Would this information be in the Southwest Virginia Museum at 10 West Street? Would you please direct me to the best source of information and the library? John Marshall raised his family in Turkey Cove/Bailey Holler and later moved to Olinger. I have no records to tell whether he was born in the Bailey homestead in Turkey Cove or elsewhere. Thank you for any information you can provide. With deepest appreciation, Jake S. I may be wrong but i think she lived in a minning town called Bonnie Blue , would like info on that town if possible? Thank You!

Can't believe I just now discovered this site. I am so thankful for growing up in BSG in the 50s and early 60s. PVHS class of 65 grad..went to BSG Elementary 1st thru 7th, except in the 3rd at ESG where my teacher was Mrs. Rutherford. At BSG Elem, I still remember teachers Reba Stone, Arline Sharpe, and Reba Rasnick. At PV, stood at the blackboard for a week trying to work a geometry problem for Ms. Broadwater. I still have great memories of the Trail theatre, PV Drive In(remember "Thunder Road"?!), Country Boy Pool, Valley Lake, PV Key Club, Carmines, and many more. As many may remember, my father and grandfather operated Buckles Super Market, where a great many area people worked. My wife Jamie is a 65 grad of Lynn View HS in Kspt. We both work at MECC. I have a brother Mike, and sister Maggie. Would love to hear from John Neth, Jimmy Collins, and any other 65 PV grad. My daughter Lori also graduated from PVHS.

ANYONE RECONIZE ANY OF THESE NAMES? LET ME KNOW JAYSON, I BET YOU WISH YOU WERE HERE IN PANAMA CITY BEACH, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN, IT IS A MAJOR SPRING BREAK CITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE KIDS. I REMEMBER YEARS AGO WHEN WE WENT TO VISIT BSG AND EVERYBODY FROM THERE WAS COMING TO PC, I COULD NEVER FIGURE OUT WHY FOLKS FROM BSG WOULD WANT TO VISIT PC. I WAS IN HEAVEN VISITING THERE AND I HAD MY FIRST VANILLA COKE AT CARMINES BOY THAT WAS SOMETHING ELSE. ANYWAY JAYSON TO GET TO THE POINT MY SON IS NOW 30 BUT WHEN HE WAS A . TEENAGER HE WAS ALWAYS COMPLAINING OF NUTTING TO DO AND HERE HE WAS AT ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS IN THE WORLD. SO JUST HANG IN THERE AND ONE DAY, YOU WILL SEE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR CITY AND AS YOU GROW OLDER YOU WILL FIND THERE IS MORE TO DO.

There just isn't anything to do... Good Lord, how many times have I uttered those words when I was growing up in BSG during the late fifties and early sixtys? Actually, it was more like, "There ain't nutin' ta do around here". And I was right!! We didn't even have a TV for goodness sakes. Heck, we didn't have electricity for part of my childhood! NO ELECTRICITY!!! Yep.. that's right... no electricity. Boy, oh boy, how in the world could a kid survive without electricity? No electronic toys... no computer... NOT EVEN A REFRIGERATOR!!!! What's a kid to do for goodness sakes??? There ain't nutin' ta do. This was always said with my lower lip pouched out and my head hung down like a scolded puppy. TA DAAAAA.... That's when SUPER MOM fixed everything!!! She could always find things for me to do... things I never dreamed of doing... So I learned quite young not to say those words around the house for fear of Mom finding all kinds of things for me to do! That was years and years ago... And guess what??? I've been reading here that there STILL AIN'T NUTIN' TA DO!!!! Can you believe it!?? After all these years, no one has come up with SOMETHING TO DO! After reading some of the comments the children are making, I think back to some of the things I did when there wasn't anything to do... Is Powell River still running through the valley??? I couldn't begin to tell you how much fun I've had fishing, swimming and floating on that river. What about the mountains, I'm pretty sure they are still there. I spent many hours hunting, camping, hiking and taking pictures of those wonderful mountains. How about the caves... I loved exploring.... Is there a swimming pool?? Many hours were spent there on long Summer days. One of the things I enjoyed most was touch football... and there was the horseshoe pit that Mr. Horton made next to the depot in Cadet. The pit (that's what I called it) was a gathering place in the evening where we all got together and visited. All these things had one thing in common.. Friends... talking, visiting.. the list is long... Donnie, Slick, Roger, Marvin, Doc, Peevine, Bantey, Bubber, Sunny, Skeeter, and many many others... How about the bookmobile?? Does it still come around? Don't forget to occasionally get lost in a good book. This is more important than you realize. Now... I'm gonna tell you a REALLY BIG secret!! You ain't gonna' believe this.. Not now, maybe not even in the next few years... but soon enough.. You will find that the best thing you have going for you is your family and friends. Yep.. that's right. If you are a teen, you don't have many more years to spend with your family and friends. You can bet that either you will move away or some of your friends will leave... either way time is relatively short. If tomorrow I awoke and found myself back in 1960 for just one more Summer vacation, guess what I would most like to do??? First, I would want to be with my family... (all have passed away now), second I would want to be with my frinds and third I would make even MORE friends. When I was a teen, I felt the same about having nothing to do. Now I know that the only person responsible for my happiness in myself.... No one else was going to take their time and money just to make me happy... Of course my family was the exception but they had neither the time nor the money to buy or build something just to keep me enertained. Another thing comes to mind... just what is it that you would like to do? Some suggestions would be heipful. As Super Mon used to say to me, "I ain't no mind reader." Buddy

To all those who are complaining about having nothing to do in BSG--I grew up there too (not very long ago actually). I got out, came to college and now live in a fairly large city where there are TONS of things to do any time of day- for people age 18 and up. For those younger, there are movie theaters, bowling alleys and not much more. Looks like even the largest of cities has trouble finding things for its teens to do. Having been where you are, you may want to rethink the idea that people will move away where there is so much more to do- because there is not that much more to do! Plus, except for the severe rednecks or uneducated rebels, you also live in a place where you are much much safer than most places. Continue to voice your need for entertainment, but do so in a way that attracts positive attention and not in a way that sounds like "kids complaining". Offer suggestions, write informed letters, and initiate contacts with actual business people who can DO something about your needs-- the City Council can't produce entertainment if there is no investor to build it and fund its start up operations.

I am trying to help a niece who lives in Alaska research her family history. I have been told that her Great Uncle James Collier lived in the Big Stone Gap area. His daughter married Billy Buckles who owned a grocery store there. Her Grandfather was Robert Lee Collier and died suddenly in 1937 of an asthma attack. Contact was then lost with his side of the family since he left a wife with 6 children to support. If anyone can help me with information regarding the family history, I would be most grateful.

I'm trying to locate my aunt, long time Big Stone resident Billie Jean Scott. Billie was the Librarian at Big Stone or Powell Valley High (not sure which!) for MANY years. Ah! The good ole days. I remember growing up in Big Stone. Back then there was a lot for kids to do. We climbed the mountains and camped at High Rock or Liquor Still Rock. We worked at one of the stores or farms or just mowed yards to get a little money. If we were lucky we could go see a movie at the Trail once in a while. Quarters were hard to come by. There was a bowling ally but what teen would want to go there? I never did. Most of the boys entertained themselves by defending their turf. (Cadet, Italy Bottom, Frog Level, etc.) God forbid someone from Keokee come through. We played some sort of ball at the local ball fields and tried our best to get into trouble. We didn't often succeed. I live near Charlotte now where a teenage driver gets killed almost every weekend. Most of them with a license less than a month old. People get robbed coming out of the drug store. Homes get robbed while the owner is at home. That's a lot of fun. Would to God I could live in Big Stone again. I'm a Systems Engineer so if you hear of an opening for one let me know. As for the teens, grow up and move.

Ok people I have a question for you all. Don't you all think that it's time for a CHANGE in this town? I know most of you don't agree with what I have to say but at least listen to my point of view. Big Stone Gap doesn't offer anything for the younger kids to do 13-19 example skating rink, movie theatre, bowling alley etc. Personally I think the town needs more recreational places for us. Yes I know we have the gym,the pool, the park, and the walking trail big deal we need more than that! IF you citizens out there with would realize that the teenagers are BORED with our life staying at Home with nothing to do in this little town maybe we could have something!!! PLEASE don't be afraid to stand up for us! I know most of you think that teens are a bad thing but every town has them and I think it is up this town to give them something to do!! They are citizens of this town as well as the others! They have feelings and they deserve something better! I think it's about time that people wake up and town council children need more!!!! BSG won't make it much longer if you all just sit back and let it keep running like it is today.... soon everyone with children will pack out and move to somewhere that offers a wide variety of things for them to do!!!! Just remember that!!

This comment is for the people who think they are all that and that this town is the best! d 90% of the students are stuck up snobs who think they rule the world which they may at PV but they will find out they don't! So if they realize they weren't they'd be better off! You know the unpopular people are people too with feelings! And I'm going to tell you that Adriana Trigiani doesn't know what she is talking about because the town is NOT "people friendly" as she portrayed it. Yes we have some friendly people but most of them are rich snobs who drive fancy cars and live in big houses they don't even need! Plus Adriana doesn't even live here anymore, maybe when she did live here everyone was "people friendly" but it's not like that now. Plus I don't blame her for moving! The town council HATES kids and they want us to stay inside and not having nothing for teens to do in this town, then when we tell them we need something they always bring up crap that we have that don't interest us! All this town wants is the tax payers money and more land! I'll tell you one thing this town is a rip off!! They are starting to act like China everyday!! When ya'll lose everything you have you can say you heard it from me first because this town is a rip off and more! I don't care what you people say you all are old and think this is a great town and well if you were a kid like me you're realize it's not all that and a bag of chips. IT TOTALLY SUCKS IN BSG and til the Town Council realizes that the kids are unhappy it will go on like this forever! I think it's time the kids tell them how they feel!!! STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!

I came to this site because I have just finished reading "Big Stone Gap" by Adriana Trigiani and I wanted to see if the town is as "people friendly" as she portrayed it. Although many people are quite satisfied with the conditions, there are those who have the same old gripes and complaints I hear here. I guess people are pretty much the same all over. The town where I live has a population of approximately 90,000. We have a large mall and several shopping centers, large movie theaters, video rental stores, many restaurants (fast food and others), a branch of the University of Texas and a very good community college. There is a little theater group and a replica of Shakespeare's globe theater. Both produce excellent performances during their seasons. The colosseum brings in rock and country music acts several times a year, as well as an annual rodeo, and, of course, the county fair. We have two very large high schools with the usual extracurricular activities. Both schools have execellent sports teams and often go to the state finals for 4-5A in football. One has been state champs several times. We have a semi-pro hockey team and a nearby city has a AAA baseball club that is a farm team for the Oakland A's. The same nearby city also has all the amenities mentioned above and it is within easy driving distance. Oh, yes, there is a library here where you can check out books, videos, books on tape, and explore the internet on their computers. We have an art museum and another museum, plus some historic houses. I'm sure I have missed some of the things we have. The reason I listed all these things was to say this: What do our teenagers complain about? You guessed it! "Nuttin' ta do!" Now, what we don't have is something BSG has. We are on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. We do not have beautiful mountains, rivers, streams, forests, or caves. Our youngsters can't go hiking in the mountains, or fishing in a nearby stream. We have to drive for at least 2.5 hrs. for those things. The only cure for the teenage malady of "nuttin' ta do" is to grow up, and when they are grown, they will long for the days when they were young and had all the possibilities in the world ahead of them. We have a prison facility here, too. It is not as large as yours, but houses dangerous criminals who are being transported to other facilities. If anyone wants to stop prisons, they need to find a way to stop crime. It is the criminals who make the prisons necessary, not the government and not law enforcement. If someone wants to live in a society in which lawbreakers are not confined, let him go somewhere else to find that society. In the meantime, don't blame the people who are trying to protect us from criminals, blame the criminals.

I have just been enjoying the commints some of the people of which still live in BSG or are former residents. First I have nothing but PREAISE for the these people that know what is going on and have the guts to say what is on their minds. Now, for those that say that the prison Wallans Ridge is inhumain and unmoral to the prisisoners there. Get a life, these people are the WORST OF THE WORST and if you think for one second these prioners would not hesitate for one second to kill or main you for life, you had better wake up. This prison has saved a lot of people's life with jobs to put food on your tables and kept clothes on your childrens back. Also if it were up to me I would give the guards live amunition instead of less than leathel waepons to keep order up there. I just hope that there is never a jail break and one or all the convicts get to the people of BSG, because it would be very ,very ugly what would happen. So to the goodie, goodie people, you don't know what you are talking about.

I'm president of a family association of the descendants of Johannes and Anna Flinner whose children settled in the Holston River area and became known as Fleenor. I'll be visiting the area in July 2004 when we hold our second annual nation-wide family reunion in Bristol, and hope to see all the sites that were connected with our family. Eddie Howard is a member of my website and speaks very highly of the work you've done in preserving our family history. I descend from Abraham, son of Nicholas. I look forward to meeting you and having you share some of your wealth of knowledge. We had 300 attendees from 19 states at our first reunion held in Wash. Co., IN. this summer. The area was settled by numerous pioneers from southwest Virginia and you'd feel right at home up there with all the Fleenor descendants.

Our town is too small. Our kids have to go somewhere like Norton or Kingsport just to have fun with out getting in trouble. I think where the old Magic Mart bilding is you people should open up a big skating ring. Just think for a min. All of our kids would have a place to go to hang out with there friends. It would put a couple more jobs in big stone. That way on a saturday night your kids would not have to go to Kingsport to have fun. It would pick up bussiness in big stone. So if you dont wont Big Stone Gap to turn out like Applachia you better open something up for the kids. I mean please dont let Big Stone die for all the kids. Chris Phillips

My mother and Father and both sets of grandparents were born in BSG. I stil have quite alot of Cousins still liveing here. Rodgers,Delph,Blanken,Pearson,Phillips,Stanleys. So needless to say quite alot of visiting over the years. I have been reading so many complants thats theirs nothing to do in BSG,don't take this to heart because we hear the same thing here in Harpersferry WVA. I beleave all kids say the same thing. Its not untill their grown that they appreciate what they had as a child. What we elders would give to go back and relive just one summer!!!The summer I would relive would be the vacation we took and spent the week with Aunt Maire and Uncle Steave Rodgers. We didn't do any thing special,Just sat around and talked. But the dinners were the best. I sill remember the dinner with green beans and potatoes. Maybe kids now days don't get the family closeness that we had, Now days everybody is so fast paced,rush-rush to get things done, and now it takes to working parents to make a liveing. They say progress is good,But what has it done to our children?

I was born in Appalachia in 1949 and attended Appy High until the end of my junior year before moving to Tennessee. My mother,Cora David, was a native of the Gap. I, as once was the custom it seemed, dated a Powell Valley High student, Phyllis Davis, off and on through high school. I would love to hear from anybody from that era from either high school.

Michael from Ireland, I am quite certain your post as well as this one will be deleted soon and both should be. I just want to say that the folks of BSG have no more to do with the barbaric treatment of prisoners at Wallens Ridge than you or I. They really are Christian, God-Fearing and Patriotic. I am sure also that the state doesn't come in and tell them of this treatment or get their approval. Some nerve you folks have to post such garbage! I do agree with you that the treatment of these people seems to be a violation of human rights in a big, big way. I am sick about it. You might try contacting the Gov. of Virginia.

It was good to learn that such a Christian, god-fearing and patriotic town like Big Stone Gap approves of the barbaric methods used in the supermax system. When the good people of your town next attend church why don't they reflect on what they would feel like if their sons were incarcerated in such a place. The town of Big Stone Gap has some nerve to place such happy shite as it does on its website. When you achieve some level of morality in how you support the torture of prisoners, your town may be worth a visit. Until then you can shove your happy, smiling attitude.

Daddy I love You. Momma Keep the Flowers in Heaven blooming. Granny Hobbs thanks for teaching me that "Old Time Religion". I will never forget ya'll. There is a certain feeling you get when you come back to BSG after being gone for a long time. I can not explain it but I'm sure that everyone who has left BSG and returned years later knows that very feeling. To all my Caudill and Hobbs family I send you my Love and prayers. GOD BLESS.

Learning to appreciate your home, friends and family is appreciating where you come and where you have been in life. Big Stone Gap and Appalachia has many wonderful people. I will always be loyal to them and will never forget the life I grew to love. Small town, good people. I have lived in the larger city, but it sure felt good coming back home when I was away at college. It felt good living in Big Stone Gap after living in Chicago, Illinois for a couple of years when I first married. In other words, "There is no place like home."

There was a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American. It made me stop and think about just what constitutes an American. So I thought I would let them know what an American is.

An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be Cherokee, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish or Buddhist or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no relegion. For that he will answer to God, not to the government, or the armed thugs claiming to speak for the government or for God.

An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each man and woman to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was overun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.

Americans welcome the best. The best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But we also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, the Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These, in fact, are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a paticular people from a paticular place. They are the embodiment of the human sperit of freedom.

Everyone who holds to that sperit, everywhere, is an American.

No electronic toys... no computer... no table lamps...

This is more important than you would think.

Now... I'm gonna tell you a REALLY BIG secret!! You ain't gonna' believe this.. Not now, maybe not even in the next few years... but soon enough.. You will find that the best thing you have going for you is your family and friends. Yep.. that's right.

If tomorrow I awoke and found myself back in 1960 for just one more Summer vacation, guess what I would most like to do??? First, I would want to be with my family... (all have passed away now), second I would want to be with my frinds and third, I would make even MORE friends.

So when you're thinking, "There ain't nutin' ta do around here", go find your mom.. look her staight in the eye and say...Mom, I sure do love you... It will make her day.... And yours too. "Buddy"

This is for David. Let me tell you something fool I lived in BSG for along time and I have 6 children. Just because the fact that town has nothing for children we moved. I am on Jayson's side. Jayson babe preach on. You need to stand up for what you believe in.There is alot for you to do in Rogersville. Living in that town you'll feel like a nobody. BSG is just a lil spot on the map that has nothing to offer for the young. I strongly agree with Jayson the town needs to shape up and get something to do for them. David you are making this teen look like a bad person and he don't have nothing to do so you need to shut your mouth! I'm tired of seein people like you judge our children. That's the reason BSG has nothing for the children because immature people like YOU David! Jayson I hope that you go far in life and once you get outta BSG you'll see it's so much better! God Bless you and you know I'll be here to back you up all the way!

It's time for another year for the Railroad days in Appalachia. All the fun starts at 6 p.m. tonight. Here is the schedule for the event:

Gospel singings launch the festival on Wednesday, July 31, and Thursday, Aug. 1.

Lee Smith serves as master of ceremonies Wednesday night, as local talent and singers from area churches are showcased on stage. Thursday night, the pros come to town - the King's Messengers, Divine Purpose and the Oak Grove Emergency Choir. Both events start at 6 p.m.

In the event of rain, concerts move to the Appalachia Cultural Arts Center, next door to the festival stage.

Friday night's 50s and 60s party starts at 7 p.m. downtown

Saturday, the action begins at 8 a.m. and lasts until about 10:30 p.m., when the new Miss Caboose is crowned to cap off the festival fare.

Kids will enjoy the 24-foot-high "stone" climbing wall, while adults will get a kick out of Elvis in concert and the Police Dog Demo which showcases the talents of K-9 officers on the job.

Civil War buffs will enjoy the re-enactment by the 12th Tennessee Cavalry Company B, complete with shoot-outs and a bank robbery as well as a look at our more recent past, depicted in the intricate model train layout assembled by the Lonesome Pine Model Railroaders Inc. Visit the railroaders in their display area in the basement of the Appalachia Cultural Arts Center today through Friday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and all day Saturday.

The Sutton Great Shows carnival will be set up and operating Thursday through Sunday under the bridge near Payless Supermarket. It's the oldest carnival in the nation, and they're bringing 16 to 18 rides to Appalachia for Coal-Railroad Days

Main Street closes down for the full slate of events planned for Saturday, starting with the 8 a.m. Coal-Railroad Days 5K Walk and One Mile Run/Walk, Sharrett said. Carol Saboites coordinates the annual event.

Food and craft vendors set up at 9 a.m. on Main Street.

At 11 a.m., there'll be a "bank robbery" at Miner's Exchange Bank, between the town hall and Payless Supermarket. Also at 11 a.m., the Fun Time Castle, an inflatable attraction for kids ages 3 to 13, opens, sponsored by Wolfe, Williams & Rutherford.

The Shriner's Parade is at noon.

The parade is followed by the Coal-Railroad Days Pet Show, sponsored by Kim Giger and Dog Shop.

Fun Factory inflatable rides open at 2 p.m. and go until 6 p.m., sponsored by Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital. On the festival stage, near the Appalachia Cultural Arts Center, the Virginia Sugar Cane Cloggers launch the afternoon's entertainment, sponsored by the law firm of Kern and Kern.

The Dajavu Band performs on stage at 2:30 p.m., sponsored by Trevor Supply.

A Civil War shootout unfolds at 2:45 p.m., sponsored by Auto World.

At 3 p.m., K-9 police officers from the town of Appalachia and Wallens Ridge State Prison perform, as their handlers outline for audiences how the dogs "work" and how they are rewarded for their successes.

Tommy Short and Linda Butler are onstage at 4 p.m., sponsored by G&G and Galloway Trucking.

At 4:30 p.m., magician Joseph Young performs, sponsored by St. Mary's Hospital.

There's a shootout in the offing at 5 p.m., sponsored by Auto World.

At 5:15 p.m., "Kimberly" performs, sponsored by Old Dominion Power.

Elvis - Ronnie Smallwood, of Norton - takes the stage at 6 p.m., sponsored by Wade's Market, followed at 7 p.m. by Diane Carter, and at 8 p.m. by the Old School band, sponsored by Norton Community Hospital.

Giveaways are at 9 p.m., and at 9:30 p.m., Fitcon Grafix sponsors the Miss Caboose Contest, "where he dresses up in her finest, The men go all out. It's the traditional festival favorite that winds up the night. Appalachia is where male beauty contests started in the county. It's kind of a compliment that several other area towns have added this kind of event to their festivals, too.

SO COME ON OUT AND ENJOY THE FUN IN ASTONISHING APPY,VA!!!

I remember the good ole days when weekends were for crusing the Country Boy and the Patio. Well the Patio is still there. Let's take a look at "then and now" Then only a few people had cars and we cruised with 4, 5 or even 6 in a car. Now every 16 yr old has and car and that would create a tremendous traffic jam. You can never go back.

Out of all the comments that I have have been reading, there is only one person brave enough to speak up about the problems with the law enforcement in BSG. As a reply to the person who wrote that the kids should only go to school and learn, if you did this when you were growing up I really feel sorry for you. Yes, the young people should get the best education they can possibly get, and Va. schools are ranked very high in the National Education Field. What I strongly disagree with is your comparing BSG and Nashville Tenn. Both have the same problems, just on a different scale. 4,000 people vs 2 million people will produce a compleately different element. If someone would just think, the more restrictions you put on someone the more they are going to rebail against the system. People in their 40,s and min 50,s remember the COUNTRY BOY, and even before that CARMINES in the center of town. The present young people have NOTHING to expend the energy in BSG. Keeping a cerfue and crusing to a mandatory limit is causing the crime rate to explode in this small town. Why can't the law enforcement be their friend they need instead of being th BILLY BAD ***** they have as a reputation they have now. All the local goverment are in the CARMINE era when they were growing up, and if they open their eyes they would realize the fun and respect for law enforcement. Everyone knew everyone and they had a great deal of fun growing up. I am 47 and I stand behind the GOD given rights that the teens must have a life beyond school and fear. Let them grow up with the experences we had at that age. If you don,t the town fathers(or the governing council)will really have a problem on their hands when these kids grow up and thru frustration and anger really become sneeky, devious, nontrusted employees people with a unlawabiding attitude about everything. Of course there will some bad apples in every group of people, BUT WHY MAKE MORE. I will say again WAKE UP BSG AND SEE WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU. YOU ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN MAKE A REAL CHANGE IN HOW YOUR TOWN IS GOVERNED. Take a stand and make the difference before it is too late.

We attended the Carroll family reunion in Big Stone Gap last Saturday(July 13th). We did get a chance to tour the John Fox home. My husband's mother was a Fox and had a great, great great grandfather named John Fox who fought at the battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina against Corwallis in the reveloutionary war. We might be related somehow. We really enjoyed the hospitality of the people that we came in contact with, we plan to return in the fall and spend a few days in the area.We look forward to the fall colors and the beauty of the area. See ya next time. Friends in Tennessee

Looking for members of my father's family. His name was Stanley Huff, has been deceased over 40 years, when I was a baby. His father lived in Big Stone Gap almost as many years ago, also deceased. His name was Ishmeal or Isaac Huff. His brother was Ishmeal, I believe. I would just like to learn a little bit about my father's side of the family and if I'm really lucky, maybe see a picture of him. I met my grandfather only once before he died, and my mother died a few years later, so I have nothing really to go on. This is an attempt to find someone who may be able to give me some information.

Our Duff family settled in the area that became Duffield in the early 1800s after the original Duff family and their 3 sons sailed from Belfast, Ireland for America. The father died en route and was buried at sea. The rest came on to Virginia to establish the Duff homestead along Wallen Creek near Stickleyville. We have been up to visit your beautiful area many times and our son, Joseph has visited your museum. We find you site quite interesting.

This is for Jayson! Hey man, I was born in Big Stone in 1980. I think you need to stop whining about all the things you don't like in Big Stone. I don't know for a fact but probably the reason there is a cerfue...... a bunch of teenagers started getting roudy and raising hell and so on. These laws are made for a reason. To keep order in the town. And as far as teenagers not having nothing to do, you have plentey to do. Go to school, get an education, do your homework and make something of yourself one day. That is what Teenagers are supposed to do, your not even at the legal drinking age yet for god sake. Just keep doing what you are SUPOSSED to do and quit trying to act like an adult. Thats life man. Deal with it. Don't get me wrong, I'm 22 years of age, but I have a full time job as a supervisor/lead man, I have a wife and 2 kids. Just doing my part as an American sitezen. All you need to do is your part as an American sitezen......Be a teenager and do what your elders, including council members ask of you. Life will be alot easier............TRUST ME. Thanks for your Time Jayson, and God Bless You.

I am a current resident that left BSG 22 years ago. Even though this is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been. There are cretain elements is this small town that makes living there a nightmare. I am the 4th son of Frank Ervin Edens. Since 1945 our faimaly has had several businesses in BSG. In 1945 the faimaly had a restruant on the corner across from the Beauna Vista Hotel, in the 60's my father had a RESTRUANT-PUB(which everyone called it a beer joint) in the location next to Arwoods Auto is located, in the 70's we had a small grocery store in Cadet(just to the left of the Cadet bridge), and finally in the early 90's we had another restruant especially put up for the young people to come to called DIGGER'S DELICATESSAN, located beside the Domonios Pizza just off main street behinde Sue's Hallmark Shop. Someone set fire to the last business just as we were starting to get the business was becomeing a very well patronised place by the community. AND I DO THANK EVERYONE WHO WAS A PATRON. Now the down side of BSG is, there is absolutly nothing for the teens to do, as I understand there is a cerfue and a limit on how many times they can cruse thru town before they are given a written violation of some sort. The biggest problem with this town is the GOVERMENT that rules BSG. Everytime I talk to a friend in BSG the town council has voted an increase on something they control. Agood example is the water, sewer, and garbage is 15 times th rete I pay iin a Large city, and the residents that live outside the corprate limits pay even more. This is totally uncalled for. I have many other things that is not right but my main question is,"Why does a small town have so many police officers, detectives, undercover agents and keep and maintain 25 plus town vehicles, from Police cars to a $40,000, 4-wheel drive vehicle for the town inspector. Why can't they drive a used compact car or truck like the residence of BSG has to? I would like to move back to BSG someday because it is my home and my roots are there, but as long as the present goverment either conforms to vicious cutbacks in unnecessary spended or all are replaced, the closest I will get to BSG is a long distance phone call. IT IS TIME FOR EVERYONE TO WAKE UP AND SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR TOWN.

I am a Powell Valley graduate Class of 1975. I have been trying to reach the PV online to change/update my information on the Class list. When I try to update the message comes up to check the recipients address. I am hoping someone on the Powell Valley Staff will read this and let the support system know they have a problem. It is a good place to get people's e-mail addresses which change from time to time. There are a few good sites to look at for High School Alumni here are a few.If you want to look at PV it is www.PVonline.org and if you want to look at APPY then try www.Telexus.com/AHS/ there is also www.classmates.com. Hope to see you there. When are they going to start filming in the Gap???? Diddy

It's sad to see young people hate their hometown. The entertainment media are always misrepresenting big city life as "glamourous and exciting." If living in fear of having your house robbed or having a drug dealer on every corner is exciting, then no thanks! I lived in Nashville (which is tame compared to even larger cities like New York or Philadelphia) and found that it was no home at all. Who would want to live in a place where they wouldn't feel safe letting their children play in the fron yard? I didn't. The small towns are where it's at! The feeling of community is overwhelming and a you never have to look too far for a friend. I would suggest adopting the values of friends/neighbors in the community instead of those pushed by MTV and the urban culture. That's my opinion...no offense.

I have family that lives in the area of Big Stone Gap, I visit often. I love the area down there, I am looking to move down there when I finish with school. I am studying IT/Networking and plan on a career in the IT field, I would like to work in radio as an engineer, but I know moving to an area like BSG, that I might not get that necessarily, but I am looking for a career possibilty, if anyone there would have any leads I would appreciate them, as well has anyone that is looking for a new friend from out of town that can really help show me the way around there, I will be moving by myself when I do show up there. Will be the new guy in a small city. I do not graduate till May of next year, but it is readily approaching, trying to get my name out there while I can. I have family in Exeter, my mother grew up in Keokee, I also have family in other parts of the area.

I am searching for an old friend, Roy Robertson, was a Gulf (Chevron) Oil Jobberthere in Big Stone Gap. Roy was a WWII fighter pilot, who owned his own twin engine Piper. Roy was married to a charming lady by the name of Dorothy. Roy and she had a number of daughters wo might still live in the area. I have made numerous atempts through the years to contact Roy but due to distance, time and age, they have been unfruitful. I may have Roy's last name wrong but perhaps you can help in locating him. When I last saw him, his health was poor due to problems with kidney failure and may have something to do with my inability to locate him or his family. Hopefully, in this age of information accessability, perhaps I will find Roy.

Last September, I was in your town for a night, but would like to return. I was on my way to Abingdon, VA to research my Cossel - Fleenor family that lived in Washington Co in the 1770s to 1830s. You have a beautiful location and both the motel and restaurant people were very friendly. Hope to return to spend a few days in your area.

My grandparents are from Big Stone Gap, Wentz Lambert (June Bill) and Dorothy Nickels. I had the pleasure of taking my grandpa to BSG because he has not been there for 20 years. I think we were the last people to stay at the daniel boone hotel before they condemned it. :)

I fully support the city of Big Stone Gap (one of the few decent places to live anymore) and the correctional officers at Wallen's Ridge. I have worked inside a correctional institute and know what it's like. Until Mr. Shultz or his cronies cast more stones, they should be made to spend a night amongst the general population of any prison. Then they would be begging the officers to be more vigilant. Amnesty Intl. can shove it, as far as I'm concerned!

God Bless the Correctional Officers! Rob

Faye Holbrook is my mother. My mother's father's brother was Wilson M. Holbrook. He was born in Coeburn, the son of James H. Holbrook and Laura Bell Corder. He came to the gap around 1935. He and Aunt Mabel J. Holbrook, his wife, lived just across the street from his store, Holbrook's Furniture. My Uncle Wilson gave much of his time, energy and talents to make his town a better place to live. He was one of the five men who worked for the incorporation of the Lonesome Pine Hospital in 1967. He was named to the initial Board of Directors of Lonesome Pine Hospital. He served as Business Manager of the Tri-State Singing Convention for several years. My Uncle and Jerry Potter were the first two to get a rescue squad started in Big Stone Gap. He was a charter member of the Big Stone Gap Rescue Squad, served on the Board of the Wise County Rescue Squad, Inc. and served as treasurer of the Big Stone Gap Rescue Squad for over 19 years. My Uncle Wilson died September 13, 1983 in Lonesome Pine Hospital. He was 83 years old. I love and miss him with all my heart. He was so good to everyone he met. Big Stone Gap is a better place to live because of Uncle Wilson. I visit the gap as often as possible and some day hope to move there.

If anyone is doing research on the LIGHT family members from southwest virginia or even on the tennessee side, I would be interested to hear from you. Do you have a LIGHT reunion in that part of the state? Any relatives of THOMAS LIGHT out there. Thank you for your help. My e-mail address is fmlfos@aol.com M. Light
