Name: D. Robinette CommentsI was born and raised in BSG. I moved away in 1981. I visited there this past weekend and was very saddened by what I found. It reminded me of a ghost town. What has happened to the life and warmth that used to be? Where are all the teenagers? I remember looking forward to the weekend. There were always things to do. The town was alive with the sound of laughter and good clean hometown enjoyment. Where are the theaters, the bowling alleys, the hang out cafes, cruising main street, the pool room? The young people are the future of BSG. What happens when everyone decides to leave as soon as they finish High School because they feel it's just a dead end town? I feel really sorry for the young people living there today. There will be no warm memories to take with them on their lifes' journeys. No voices from the mountains.. calling them home. No strings that tie them forever to the place they grew up. What a really sad thought.

Name: Diane Conti CommentsI am writing in protest of the supermax prisons that are proposed for your town. I regret that I do not have my Supermax Awareness program finished yet as I would have come to make a presentation at your town hall meeting. I hope that as much effort goes into showing the real face of supermax to your towns people as I'm sure has gone into extolling the employment and economic advantages. In my opinion, other alternatives could have been found to bring up the local economy than opening a torture chamber for prisoners in your own back yard. The frightening part about all of this is that our laws being what they are, anyone can end up in a supermax without even trying. Even you. Please do your citizens a favor and show both sides of this issue. I urge you to also visit our website that I have enclosed. We are a non sectarian Buddhist group that supports the Buddhist practices of inmates around the country - many in supermax or lock down facilities. Please do not misunderstand, I DO believe if you make crime you do time, but let's have the time fit the crime and the prisons be as humane as possible. In the past, prison was for reform, today only for torture. We must ask ourselves what lessons are we teaching these inmates? Where will the supermax inmates from your facility go once released from your prison? Would you want them to live in your town after the "rehabilitation" they received there? Think about it long and hard. Gassho, Diane Conti co-founder of The Buddhist Inmate Sangha
Name: Austin CommentsSomeone should shut that damn prison down. All there doing is making worse criminals out of those guys. NO MORE PRISONS,

Name: Elizabeth Robertson CommentsI was born and raised in a suburb of Cincinnati. I attended a branch of the University of Cincinnati until I earned my associates degree and then transfered to Northern Kentucky University where I graduated in 1998 with a BA in Education. I am 27 years old and teach kindergarten at Felicity-Franklin Elementary and I currently live in Withamsville, OH. I attended a class at NKY titled "Appilachian Literature" and from that moment I've been hooked. THANK YOU to my professor, Dan Miller!! I can't get enough. I think this type of literature can really reach generations to come. It has definately helped me to realize the importance of family heritage and story telling. My mother's family (Chitwood) are from Pine Knot and my father's (Cole) are from Booneville (both in Kentucky). The people of Big Stone Gap are very fortunate to be rooted around those who appreciate and keep alive the history of that area. I love it and I have no personal heritage there at all!! Take care to notice everything!

Name: Billy C. Taylor, Sr. CommentsI born in Bonny Blue, Va. of Lee County 1936, moved to Dunbar, Va. around 1938, moved to Big Stone Gap, Va. around 1943, where I live in Southern area. I grew up in Southern, as my grandmother (bigmother) live in Southern all her life. Big Stone Gap had 5 deafies and enjoyed together. I remember that Big Stone Gap has wonderful business--Carmines, Monte Vista Hotel, Big Stone Theatre, Big Boy Drive-In, Ben Franklin Store (5 & 10 cents), Trail Theatre, Earle Theatre, Trail Motel, Tri-State Bus Line, Thompson (billiard), Drug Store, all gone. What happened? Since I went away from Big Stone Gap, Va. 1958. Because of no job for deaf people. I worked as printer in Richmond, Va., married to Deanna Duncan from Raleigh, NC. I got International Typographic Union card, move to major print newspaper in Washington Post. I worked for Washington Post for 22 years, then move to United States Postal Service in Richmond, Va. and work there for 17 years--now retired. I love Powell Valley of Big Stone Gap (Southern area). Recently we visited Southern August 19, 2001. My eyes was wide open to big change in Southern and more people live in Southern. I really miss this Southern area very much. If you know me, please e-mail me--Ocrman@aol.com. We really love Big Stone Gap and Powell Valley....... Do you have any picture of Southern? If so, please send to website of Big Stone Gap, Va.

Name: teresa (holbrook) simonds Commentsi love your site it keeps me informed of the happings there where i was born.
Name: JL CommentsI moved here a couple of years ago.. I must say the town is OK... Don't know if its me or not, but it seems to be hard to 'blend in' if you are not from here.. everyone has their friends and family that they choose to be with and its hard to break thru that . I even attended church here a few times and no one seemed to talk to me.. I was very friendly.. the preacher did, but you expect that.. no one asked me who I was or where I came from or anything.. 3 times!! anyway, sometimes I do go to the park and walk, but folks seem to be in their own little world.. It is a wonderful place to live, but you need to know someone or have connections to blend in to the people I guess.. where I used to live, I had no trouble making friends..
Name: Jay CommentsOkay well first I would like to say this town really isn't all that great like everyone says it is. This is an older citizens community and nothing for young adults like me! Our school is skanky and about to fall down! Our town council only wants stuff for older people and they just think the young adults should stay home and do nothing well they are sadly wrong! I think they need something for us to do and I'm not afraid to voice my opinion! The quacks arleady took away our park and I don't agree with that if they wanted a track they could build on at the school! That is all I have to say and I know ppl agree with me!

Name: John W. Rose CommentsIbe believe that C. Bascom slemp was my grandfathers 1st cousin. I would like to learn more about his mother, Nancy Cawood and his uncle, John Cawood.
Name: Judith Pleasant CommentsGreat site. I plan to tell many about it, especially my sisters and my daughter Vicki who is a FASHION DESIGNER/COSTUMER and lives in LA. The pictures brings back many memories of my youth. I found the site through a publisher friend who I asked to help me to try to find an email address for Adriana Trigiani. (Still looking.) A friend of mine from Knoxville sent me her Big Stone Gap audio book. It was interesting to hear of some of the places where I grew up. I am also an author, so I thought Adriana and I might have some things in common to talk about. I was born - Judith Pleasant in 1945 in Stonega,Va. and lived there until I was 9 years old and we moved to Big Stone Gap- really Powell Valley, then to Big Stone. When I was 18, Mom,Dad, Lucy and Roy PLeasant, and the clan moved to Toledo, Ohio, where I now live. I am a Spiritualist minister and psychic medium, who uses my God given gift to help people whenever I can. I have written and self published a book titled My Spirit Helpers. In my book I mention my childhood in Stonega and surrounding area and the beauty that is held in those mountains. I have also written another book titled My Way of Coping With Cancer, which I haven't published yet. But hopefully when I do it will give people hope and faith that they can beat the disease as I did, with faith and God's help. I also write song lyrics and have a song demo called Pleasnt Inspirations that ASCAP in NY. thinks is very good. So I guess there is a lot of talent that was born in the area and some are still waiting to be heard. While looking at your address book I saw many familiar names that was a part of my childhood. That was cool. I was in Big Stone and Stonega a little over a year ago catching up on memories when I was doing book signings in Tennessee. It broke my heart to see the beautiful little rustling creek that went under the foot bridge near the Baptist Church had dried up. We used to listen to it every night from our house on Buzzard Roost. If any of you remember me, and even if you don't check out my web site as it tells about me and my book. Many of you might find it very interesting. Hello to everyone- friends, and especially the Sizemores- my cousins. Would welcome any email from all who want to say hello. Many Blessings, Judy Pleasant
Name: KAREN GILLY FULCHER CommentsI enjoyed the web site. I was actually trying to get information about Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital to check out some things for my parents. It's always good to see and hear about things in good ole' BSG. Especially from "out here in the desert"- temp. 112
Name: Don Goosman CommentsI have stayed a dozen or more times in the Gap; last week I saw the drama with the kids from NC. It was very enjoyable. I always stay at the Country Inn and have become friends of Jack Gardner and Tibb Holyfield there at the inn. I always enjoy passing through on my way to Hickory, NC, from Ohio or on my back to Ohio. Of course, I always enjoy a great meal at Stringer's. I enjoy the very "walker-friendly" nature of Big Stone Gap. I have considered either moving there to teach or perhaps to retire in the area. My hometown of Waverly, Ohio, is also on US 23 in S. Ohio, about the same popu- lation (4,830) as BSG. I am enjoying the Adriana Trigiani novels very much, and I think it is great the way you've turned the town from what once looked like near economic depression into a popular place by means of technology and tourism. I look forward to returning to BSG in just a few days for a stayover on my way back to NC.

Name: Donna Myers (Mawk) Comments1968 Graduate from PVHS. Dad was "Monk" or "the can man". Both parents are gone now but I still have family in BSG. The comments from the young people that there is nothing to do in town is so familiar because in 1967-68 there was nothing to do either. There was the Country Boy, the drive-in, roller skating at the lake, spending time with friends but there was nothing to do! Would love to find Carole Neeley from "the valley". Best wishes to BSG.

Name: Darrell Kern CommentsI visit this web site as often as possible, but I still prefer to visit the town in person. After spending 17 years trying to leave the "GAP", I have spent the last 12 years trying to get back. I would love to raise my family in the loving communities that I was fortunate enough to grow up in. Living in the city, you lose the feeling of friendship with your neighbor. On my rare trips home, I am able to see real friends who ask "how are you?" and the really do want to know. I and my family truly love Big Stone, and we just want to take this time to say thank you for this wonderful web site.

Also would like help tracing Colonel(Kernal) Coomer my greatgrandfather, and his family which include Jackson Coomer his father. As per the 1900 Lee County Va. census - Jackson (born 1829) Coomer was head of household to include Nettie, Dona, Valaria, LeeAndy, Vesty, Colonel, and Samuel Coomer. I need information about Colonel Coomer born 1888. He married Ollie Jane Bush (my great grandmother) in 1910 in Lee County, Va, and they had a daughter Minnie Octavia Coomer (my grandmother). Name: James L. "Jimmy" Tucker CommentsI was born (1941) in Big Stone Gap, at my grandparents' home on Jerome Street. My father is Woody Tucker (BSG, Class of 1936) and my mother is Louise (Robinette) Tucker (Class of 1940). Dad and Mom are getting on in years, but both still have sharp memories of old friends and good times in BSG. My grandparents, now deceased, are John B. and Cornelia (Gilliam) Tucker and James L. and Pebble (Stone) Robinette. From my days at BSG Elementary, I fondly remember teachers Mahaffey, McClanahan, Flanary, Reasor, Wade, and Taylor, plus the intimidating principal, Professor J. Roy Horne -- and friends JImmy Baker (son of the school janitor), Billy Potter, Bobby Marrs, Jimmy Brown, Sandy Sandt, Nancy Ball, Susan Kilbourne, Eddy Carol Stone, Patty Harmon, the Pannells, the Lyles, Buddy Buchanan, myriad cousins, Aunt Becky Collins (the Melungeon Queen), etc., and lots of faces which I cannot now connect to names. Place names which still call forth unforgettable, bittersweet memories include the Amuse-U Theater, the Earle, Carmines, the swimming pool, the traveling carnivals during the summer, Kilbourne's Esso, Kelly Drug, Mutual Pharmacy, Daugherty's Grocery, Royal Laundry, Nickels', the Tourraine (sp?), the swanky modern bus station, Stoney's beer joint, the dime store where Aunt Frances worked, Lon Spears' wonderful-smelling barber shop, Bullitt Park, the magnificent, humongous school buildings, Glencoe Cemetery and the fountain, Beamontown, the Blue Hole, the old Wampler cabin at ESG, etc. Although my parents, my little brother and I moved from BSG in 1952, we continued to visit BSG family members regularly and I have always considered the Gap home. It is my fondest dream to return to the town of my birth and incomparable childhood. I graduated from Dublin (Va.) High School in 1959, from William & Mary in '63, and from Law School in 1966. My dear daughter, Mary, was born of my marriage to a Dublin beauty, Carole Chandler. I practiced law until 1989, when I was severely bitten by the writing bug - a very satisfying profession, which permits me to express my love for Southwest Virginia. To date, I have written 14 small books -- all about Southwest Virginia (i.e., Three Forks of the Powell) and I edit two monthly journals -- the Southwest Virginia Partisan (history) and the Bullfrog News & Review (literary). I would love to hear from other Big Stonians, reestablish contact with old acquaintances, meet new friends, and share our unique heritage, experiences, and remembrances -- or just shoot the breeze. God Bless Southwest Virginia and Big Stone Gap. Jim Tucker, 540-674-5161, backbonebooks@yahoo.com P. O. Box 504, Newbern, VA 24126

Name: Diane CommentsOllie Jane Bush married Colonel Coomer December 31, 1910 and they had a daughter, Minnie Octavia Coomer. They moved to Pennsylvania (at least Ollie and Minnie did) I have lost track of Colonel Coomer since then. Maybe he changed his first name and remarried or passed away. I would appreciate help in tracing him. Thanks!

Name: Janet Greene Cantrell CommentsI have been living in the Tampa Bay area for almost three years. I moved here in July 1998 after having served in the Big Stone Gap Constituent Service Office of U.S. Congressman Rick Boucher for more than 15 years.
