Name: stuart shull CommentsWe lived in Big Stone Gap in the 50's and moved to New York state in 1962 when my father, Dr.Gordon Shull, moved us to take over a private practice for a retiring doctor in Wilson, N.Y. My closest friend at that time was Jackie McClanahan who I have since lost contact with and will try to locate his phone number and give him a call. I still have a lot of fond childhood memories growing up in Appalachia and Big Stone. I hope this may be a start to renewing some of those memories.

Name: Becka Cook CommentsFrom viewing your page, I feel that it is more of an "Elderly" town. I feel like you need to involve the teeneagers and younger people in your town more...It was just a suggestion...but it was a very good one that u should take into consideration!
Name: Jace CommentsHey! I think this is a good page but I think it could be better with some help. But atleast we have a page unlike some places in this Wise Co. area. I think that our Big Stone Gap Town Council should have something in this area for the teenagers. I feel like they want stuff for the elders only and thats not fair. I hope someone in BSG feels the same way I do! And we need better schools too the High school is really bad!!!!!!! But oh well I guess they want us to suffer! I guess this is home of retirement!

I just found this out recently. I believe that there are other family members there also.I was hoping to find a Genealogy site on the Internet where I could find this information. Name: Bob Swecker CommentsSurprized to see BSG has a website on the internet..my we have come a long way. My dad was born in Appalachia back in 1932. We traveled with him for many years while he was in the military. When he went to Korea in 1970, we lived in Big Stone Gap and rented a house at 123 East Wood Ave. At the time, it was across the street from the Telephone Building. I attended Powell Valley High as a Sophomore and Junior and even learned how to drive there with Mr. Neff, the coach as my driving instructor. I had him previously at Keokee High in the 66-67 time period while my dad was in Vietnam and we lived in Keokee. I worked at the old Buckles Grocery as a bagger and stock boy and at Wise Printing as a janitor during the year my dad was in Korea. Anyway, have a lot of fond memories of Southwest, Virginia. Take care and write me an Email if you're so inclined. Cheers! Bob

Name: Ralph Ekwall CommentsDuring the Korean War, one of my best friends was Carl Begley a coal miner for the Big Stone Gap and Dungannon area. I know from a search of the Social Security Death Index that he died in about 1984. I have always wondered about what happened to him. I wonder if he died in a mine accident. I would also like to know about his family. I would appreciate knowing more. Thanks. Ralph Ekwall ralphomaha@yahoo.com

Name: Steve Hooks CommentsI will be moving to Big Stone Gap during March. I am purchasing the Louise Camblos house at 10 Wood Ave. and will be making my home there with my future wife, Teresa Cantrell of Duffield, and her daughter Mary Ruth. (They are daughter and granddaughter, respectively, of Bud and Mary Cobb of Duffield.) I am associate editor with Coal Outlook, a Financial Times Energy newsletter, and I will be working out of a home office. Teresa teaches first graders at Fort Blackmore Elementary and Mary Ruth is a seventh grader at Rye Cove. I am a bluegrass picker and fan. I play mandolin, fiddle and rhythm guitar. I am looking forward to finding some fellow pickers for regular jam sessions in my home and on the front porch! Teresa and I also plan to attend the Carter Fold shows and festivals on a regular basis. I look forward to visiting the VA-KY Opry, Dock Boggs Festival, Ralph Stanley's festival and other music events. I am a volunteer for WDVX (89.9 fm) out of Clinton, Tenn., and host a Sunday afternoon bluegrass/old-time country show. The webcast is at www.wdvx.com. I and my family are looking forward to becoming part of the Big Stone Gap community!

Name: William R.Slemp CommentsThis site is rather unique in that it offers us the opportunity to travel back in our memories and relive some special moments. My summers vacationing in Olinger with my uncle Cletus(Hoss) Slemp were very special to me as were my visits with Aunt Eula up in Derby. Subsequently leaving Virginia in "78" after 2 years with Westmoreland only to find myself frequently traveling back in my minds eye to visit with great friends. To those of you who still remember those good old days I often think of you. Drop me a line sometime. Billy

Name: Erica Broach-Stewart CommentsI have moved away from BSG twice, and I keep returning. I don't know if it's the nature of the setting or the people, but I keep getting sucked back. I think that BSG is a great place to raise children, but I do think that we need to have more places for the youth to hang out. Also, I am looking for a few friends: Beth Dickerson, Greg Brewster, Donald Nessacery (?) and Jenny Perry. If anyone has any info, please let me know. I would like to see some of my old friends. So if you remember me, or graduted in 90, just drop me a line.
