Name: Norwood Morrison CommentsMy grandmother, Eula Young Morrison, born in 1881, grew up in Big Stone Gap. We are trying to find information about her parents, William Young and Fannie Johnson Young, who lived in Seminary.I think that Fannie's brother was a clerk in the Wise County court and wrote a book about Wise County. My grandmother, Eula, died in 1922 at age 41, and her mother, Fannie, died in 1948. Her sister, Mary, who was born in 1887, married a Collier, which seems to be a large family in the area. If anyone has any information about the Youngs, I would very much appreciate an e-mail. Thanks.

Name: Tammy Martin CommentsHi I am trying find information about my long lost aunts. My grandmother was born Edith Owens in 1905. She married someone with the last name Taylor (first name and years of marriage are unknown to me). They had 3 daughters named Blanche, Lois and Lucille. My grandmother moved to Tennessee in the late 1930s and remarried and had 2 sons (my father and uncle). To the best of my father's knowledge his sisters were from Big Stone Gap. He saw very little of them when he was a young boy and hasn't seen them in nearly 55 years. We would very much like to find out what happened to his sisters and we hope that they are still alive. My grandmother talked about Big Stone Gap alot. We don't know if she was born there or lived there during her first marriage. Hopefully someone knows something. My grandmother was somehow related to the Daughtery family and her sister married someone named Heatherly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Name: Jim Slimp CommentsSearching for ancestors, I have my name comes from Schlempke, later changed to Schlemp, then changed and split to Slemp and Slimp. My uncle L.B. Slimp of Texas has a family tree that goes all the way back to Big Stone Gap. Visited Big Stone Gap a few years ago for just a few hours, but didn't have time, or know how to inquire being uninvited. I believe a picture I looked at, at the local museum to perhaps be a picture of my grandmother at or near the time of her marriage to my Grandfather Lloyd Black Slimp, they lived and died in Fort Worth, Texas. I have a picture of her from when she was a young woman. When I was 4 I met my great grandmother she appeared to be an Native American with long braided hair. She wore Indian garb and always sat on a blanket in the middle of her living room. Her guests were invited to sit in her furniture. I was told that one of my ancestors appeared to be mostly of Native American descent, his name was Steamboat Slimp and that he was a riverboat gambler who came down to Texas by the way of the rivers back east which lead to the Missisippi, then back up into Texas. I would appreciate hearing from anyone in Big Stone Gap. With a similar name either by e-mail: jimslimp@hotmail.com or by post: Jim Slimp 2813 Riverview Blvd. Omaha, NE 68108

Name: Ed CommentsHello Big Stone Gap
Name: Donald R. Goosman CommentsNow that US 23 is finally complete through KY around the town of Jenkins, I have found it a wonderful trip from my hometown of Waverly (near Portsmouth), OH, on US 23 to BSG. I enjoy staying there (Country Inn Motel always) 2-3 times on my way down to Hendersonville. Will also be down just prior to Thanksgiving. You have a very scenic, historic, picturesque town. I enjoyed very much walking from end to end and through it, esp. Bullitt Park area. I am convinced that the US 23 bypass did nothing but help your city (as well as your "sister cities" of Norton and Wise) by boosting the economy. I recalled a segment on one of the news documentaries back in the 1980s showing Norton as just about the poorest town in Va. You have done a lot of great things with tourism to develop your area. I have a question: is the High Knob observ. area open yet, or is it closed for the season? I recall that is sort of between you and Norton. I esp. enjoy always eating at Stringers Family Restaurant to savor some of the "home cooking" like you get nowhere else in the area, as well as Little Mexico in the shopping mall. The beauty of the Powell Valley Overlook on new section of 23 between Norton and you is breathtaking, and I got many pictures on my last trip. I have been told that I HAVE to see the drama "Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Does it run only in the summer months? Thanks for letting me visit your wonderful town. By the way, I am a teacher and may be interested in relocating to the area. Whom should I contact in either Wise Co. or BSG proper? Thanks very much for your interest. See you in a couple weeks!

I ALSO RECENTLY ATTENDED THE FINNEY REUNION HELD ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19. IT WAS WONDERFUL TO TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AND SEE THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE (NOW A POOL HALL), VISIT THE LOCATION IN FINNEY WHERE MY GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE STOOD. HER NAME WAS MINNIE PUCKETT. HER SECOND HUSBAND'S NAME WAS RIT MUSICK, BUT MOST PEOPLE KNEW HER AS GRANNY PUCKETT. MY SISTER TRAVELED FROM SOUTH CAROLINA TO ATTEND THE REUNION AS DID MY AUNT, BEULAH FIELDS,(WHO LIVES IN MARTINSBURG, WVA.) THE ONLY SURVIVING SIBLING OF TEN CHILDREN. IF ANYONE HAS INFORMATION ON FINNEY, I REALLY WOULD APPRECIATE THEM EMAILING ME. WE MET SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE AT THE REUNION AND I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS HOME. I ALSO HAD AN AUNT, VIRGIE WITT, WHO LIVED ON CRACKERS NECK. YOU HAD TO TRAVEL SUGAR CAMP MOUNTAIN TO GET TO HER HOUSE BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. IF ANY OF THIS RINGS A BELL, PLEASE CONTACT ME. FINNEY IS A WONDERFUL LITTLE TOWN AND EVERYONE THERE WAS SO FRIENDLY. I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY MY MOTHER LOVED IT SO MUCH.

Name: Ronald Brunson CommentsMargaret Carr Brunson, my dear wife of 42 years, grew up in Big Stone Gap. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1996 as a result of breast cancer. Our family have many fond memories of the numerous trips we made to Big Stone Gap to visit Margaret's parents, Annie & Walter Carr, and her sister Ruth. One of our sons recently mentioned to me that he vividly recalls his trips there as a young lad and remembers his grandfather, on several occasions, taking him to the Pet Dairy to get a Popsicle, to see the folks at the Radio Station and to visit with Santa Claus (A gentleman with a great white beard). You have a lovely town and your establishing a BSG Website was an excellent idea. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to share happy memories.
