in East Stone Gap High School from first grade (teacher Mrs.
Perrow)through eleventh grade. The two teachers that were role models for
me were L. E. Williams and Grace Rose. All my teachers were very important
but those two have really meant a lot to me throughout my working career
and even now in retirement. When I left East Stone Gap, I married W.C.
Fraley, also from East Stone Gap. We moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and I
finished my education at Oak Ridge High School. We have been in the
Knoxville area ever since where we have raised three children and now have

Thompson and my mother's name was Anita Thompson. Some aunts and uncles

Mullins, and Charma Mullins. As a young man I used to work on the VPO

It's terrific! I'm trying to track down my ancestors who lived in Lee
County probably from about 1790 to 1840. My gggg-grand mother may have
been Elizabeth Burgin, possibly related to a James Burgin who settled in
Powell Valley. I'd love to make contact with some of the Burgin's who
still live in the area; we may be cousins! I'd love to come visit for a

lived in the Appalachia-Big Stone Gap area from about 1920 to about 1930 -
"D.D. Parks". He may have had a car dealership from about 1923
to about 1926. I am trying to find out more about this individual who was
probably involved in other business activities in your area prior to 1923.
He is buried at the American Legion Cemetery near Big Stone Gap. I am
deseperately trying to locate living descendants or someone who might know
where any of his people are currently living. He is an important character
in a historical project in Mount Airy, N.C. (Surry County) from which he
came. |

Comments: The creator of this site is my uncle, Gary Kilgore. He
instructed me about this site and suggested I visit it. I enjoy being able
to read local news while I live so far away from the region. At the same
time, I am able to revisit my heritage, and check the latest sports
scores. It is very apparent that both time and effort have been put into
creating this site. I hope it is enjoyed by others as much as it is
enjoyed by myself. Personally, since I left BSG, I have found my
profession. I now work for a pharmacuetical research and development
facility and have been employed there for an extended amount of time. The
facility is considered level 3, Aids being a level 4 virus. Our most
recent batch that is being produced is with the bacteria Diptheria. Of
course, I have under went many vaccinations in preparation to being in the
containment area. Back to the fact of the site, overall I enjoy every
detail. I also like the fact that I can reunite with friends of the past

football jacket with the letter on it. Guess what! The jackets were not
blue then. The original colors were decided in an election by the combined
student body of ESG and BSG. The primary color is supposed to be Oklahoma

starting reading all the other messages and decided to send another. My
Mom and Dad (James K. Brady (Bud) & Peggy A. Collins) were both from
the area. Both Grandfathers worked in the mines. Paul and Violet Collins,
Maude Moore, James T. and Reba V. Brady. I still have some of my Mom's and
most of my Dad's family in Big Stone. Blagg, Adams, Brady, Collins. I
loved coming to Big Stone for summer visits. Going to the Mutual, and the
bowling alley. The Country Boy and the roller skating rink were the best.
Your pictures of the old school touched my heart. The school was just down
from my Gran's house, Reba V. Brady. She passed June 97, everyone was so
wonderful to my Gran and the family during that difficult time, her
church, friends, and neighbors. I know its overdue but Thank You everyone!

Comments: My father and his family lived in Big Stone Gap from 1900
- 1960s. Father = Martin Bruce Cummings Grandfather Howard Lee Cummings
was mayor of Big Stone Gap in early 1960s before he passed away.
Grandmother was Hattie Jane Bruce (daughter of Daniel Hoge Bruce and
Martha Matilda Karr) all of whom are buried in the beautiful Glencoe
Cemetery. I would love to have additional information regarding the Bruce
family in the late 1800s in the Wise County area. |
