Name: Tammie Wells Schaaf CommentsMy father was born and raised in Big Stone and I was born in Appalachia in 1959. We moved to NC when I was 1 but we returned every summer for 20 years. My Granny and Papaw lived just up from Bullitt Park. I spent every summer of my youth playing in that park. Every time I hear squeaky swings in a playground I'm wisked back in time to those wonderful days. I Miss It So So much. We still have relatives in the area. We have two Aunts still living there: Lawrencey Wells Poole and Aunt Yvonne Wells Brickey Our Grandparents were Lawrence Tildon and Eula Duncan Wells. Our father was Eugene (Gene) Clifton Wells. Their house was sold and I can't remember the adress. I would love to visit their old house one more time! I must look into that!
Name: Anna Lester CommentsIt really troubles me to read some of the comments about how someone can be so bored and "hate" his hometown so much. Granted there aren't giant shopping malls, or other amenities afforded to a larger area. What makes this place so special is the people that are there. Have you expended all of the possible resources available to you? I haven't been away that long and return home whenever I have a break or free time. You have to find your own enjoyment, this is a truth anywhere. While I do respect your opinions, I'd venture to say that you don't have the experiences that would deem you qualified to make such rash judgements on poor comparisons. All of these "things to do" bring along a lot of additional changes that aren't so pleasant. Think about that.
Name: Jayson CommentsMrs.Harned I strongly agree with your comments! There isn't anything for us to do here and once you finish high school there is nothing for you here. BSG is nothing but and old people place. That is all this town cares about. They need to wake up and see if they had something for the youth then more people would stay in this town!

Name: Sharon (Diddy) Collins Harned CommentsJust passing through again. It is disturbing to hear that the young people are bored in the Gap!They are the future and many or most of them will leave. Can you bring this subject up at school, church, and town meetings to see what you can do.How about dances, talent shows, plays, DJ's playing at the armory? There is talent in that town why not use them. Maybe an article in the Post asking the" youth" what would you like to see in this town? Just an idea.Don't sit idle and watch your children leave, you will miss them...
Name: Tonia CommentsHello everyone!!!!!! First of all, I would like to thank my mom. Mom, I love you and we appreciate everything you have done for us. Name: Jayson Commentshaha you can't have creativity here cause there isn't nothing to do! If you think this town is so wonderful why don't ya come to BSG and see how crappy it is for yourself? For one there isn't nothing to do here and all we have is crappy stores! I wouldn't tell anyone to come to this part of VA cause its boring and its not worth their time to come to BSG cause its just a spot on the map that don't even need to be there!
Name: Randy Commentsevery one here is stuck up, i hate this town
Name: Emma Doughty (Daugherty) CommentsI grew up in BSG,graduated and moved away in 1975.I was looking for pictures of the old school when I found this site,it's brought back so many memories! We lived in the Beamantown area, learned to swim in the Blue Hole, and walked to the Country Boy store until we were old enough to drive and cruise around the Country Boy Drive-In.I'm only 4 hours away, but rarely take time to get back for a visit
Name: Glenn E. Tolliver CommentsMy Father before his death in 1984 had told me that Trail of the Lonesome pine was about his family. He also said it was filmed on hie Grandmothers property. I would like to here from any family that can confirm this he was Charles third son.
Name: Pamela Carol (Lane) Reid CommentsI was born in Big Stone Gap Virginia in 1954 To Paul Allison Lane and Virginia Louise (Pleasant) Lane. We moved to Ohio in 1960. My Father was a coal miner and he had 5 children when the mine he was working at layed him off.He put Mom and us 5 kids in his car and drove to Ohio to find work. His brother William Earl Lane lived in Cincinnati and helped Dad get a job with Kroger so that he could support his family. The only "vacation" we ever took was to go back to Big Stone Gap and see all of our relatives. Ada Pleasant, Vernon Pleasant, Frank Pleasant, Rena and Roy Lane, Eunice (Lane) Pennington, they have all passed on. We still have alot a relatives there but Dad's health is such that he can't make the trip anymore. I was six years old when I left there and I have a lifetime of memories that I can go back to in Big Stone Gap. I call it "the good old days". I remember so much about that town and all of our relatives. It is a beautiful place. I am thankful that I have that part of my life to go back to. The people there come from the heart and there life is so full of love and compassion. It is so unlike so many of the big cities I have been to where its all hussle and bussle and no feelings from the heart.....God Bless Big Stone Gap, Virginia!

Name: Lorene Dotson Gudger CommentsI left a post in Feb. concerning a Yahoo Group for us to just visit and talk. I need to tell any who are interested that I have made that a "closed membership" and an "unlisted" one. If you are interested in joining us, please email me, tell me a little about yourself, and your BSG or Appalachia connection. I will then send an invitation. We want a "front porch atmosphere" but really need to know who's on the porch. Lorene
Name: kim lane Commentsi grew up in big stone untill i turned 18... right now i am really homesick. this small town will always be my home.(wish i would have realized it sooner!) i miss all my family and freinds. i want to say hello my mom(monika), dad (danny), michael, chad, and seth... i love you guys!!! see ya soon!
Name: Gail Hammitt Stamper CommentsDitto, Anonymous! There's nothing like a small town, where everyone knows everybody else, (including your business!) but that's part of the charm. At least, they are there for you in time of need. I wonder how hard some of the young people would be willing to work to change things, since they are so bored. It can be done, but not without effort. We had the same complaint where I live. When my husband became Mayor, he, with the help of the community, did something about it. They now have two modern playgrounds, basketball court, tennis court...and a baseball field, that a lot say reminds them of the one in, "Field Of Dreams." Little League and adults teams play there. ("Interested Jason? First, you have to get their attention!") I was born and raised in Big Stone, and I would love to see the younger ones have the same things, and more. Perhaps then, their memoires would become as precious as ours. Hello to my relatives, Ray & Agnes Bailey. Great job on the website!
Name: anonymous CommentsFor those of you who have stated that it is boring there, I just wanted to say that some day you may appreciate that. If you are creative you can create ways to avoid boredom. Work hard to get what you want. Peace and a small town community with values is hard to find and life outside of it is not necessarily what you think it is.

I was in town for the funeral of my grandfather, Henry Guy "Bud" Stone. I want to thank everyone for their concern for him. Everyone was so nice to my family. Name: Sam CommentsDear Jayson yes we think Bigstone is great but for a lot of us it is because we have moved away and all we have left is aur memorys of a time when live was simpler.when I visit home I am proud of the way Bigstone has not forgot it's great past.Rediscovering your past can be grate for young people. But I also realise young people dont whont to live in the past. the future is yours.I believe the town should not forget the young people.Liveing in state where the crime rate is high and drugs are a big prouplem I have found the best way to combate the proplem is to make the the young people feel like thay are part of the town.Ask them what the town needs and work whith them.As mutch as I love bigstone and dont whont it to evare forget its past.half of the population of big stone are under 21 you need thim as much as thay need you.I have met a lot of the towns young people thay are good kids the town needs to help keep thim thate way.Doing away with all thare hangouts is not the way to doit.
Name: Jayson CommentsTo whom it may concern. I am 16 years old and I live in this boring little town with nothing to do. I read your alls comments and you'll act like its the best place in the world. I have to say it's not! First, off there is nothing for us teenagers to do here in this town. All the town council wants is liquor by the drink and the assisted living! Don't they realize that there are teenagers in this town who deserve something to do? Well, I among other teens think it's time they gave us something. We have lived here all of our lives with nothing to do here and we want that to change. The Governor said that he wanted the teens today have jobs in our area, well I hate to break his heart there isn't any and if they are they will have the same problems we are having. This town has nothing to offer the family. They took our park away and now we are left at the house being bored out of our minds! Town Council it's time to wake up and give out kids something!

Name: Deann Dwyer CommentsThis is an interesting site - even for an outsider. I have read "Big Stone Gap" by Adriana Trigiani and then passed it along to a couple of my sisters, who then passed it along to friends and family. My ancestors came from Lee and Wise Counties around the turn of the century and we were raised in a very small town in Washington State. A lot of Ms. Trigiana's writings were familiar to us - even though we have never been to Virginia, let alone Big Stone Gap. I am trying to find information on my grandmother's family. If anyone can help in any way I would greatly appreciate it. She was born Marguerite Ellen Hale on May 11, 1883 in Bristol, Tennessee. She married my grandfather, William Emory Morris (son of Jacob S and Cynthia Olinger Morris)on January 25, 1898 in Clover Fork, KY. I believe he was a teacher in Inman.(Rumor has it that she was one of his students.) Her father and brother, Jimmy, may have worked in the mines. Their first son, Arthur, was born in Inman on December 3, 1898. They moved to WA in 1902-3. Maggie's mother died when she was young and her father remarried a woman with kids from a previous marriage, but they lost touch when the Morris' moved out west. I have a newspaper clipping from the Post dated June 13, 1990 where Hazel Joyce of Keokee, which is where William Emory was born when it was called Crab Orchard, was researching the Morris family and their connection to the story of "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Does anyone know if she ever finished that book? I would love to buy a copy if one is available.

Name: D. Robinette CommentsI was born and raised in BSG. I moved away in 1981. I visited there this past weekend and was very saddened by what I found. It reminded me of a ghost town. What has happened to the life and warmth that used to be? Where are all the teenagers? I remember looking forward to the weekend. There were always things to do. The town was alive with the sound of laughter and good clean hometown enjoyment. Where are the theaters, the bowling alleys, the hang out cafes, cruising main street, the pool room? The young people are the future of BSG. What happens when everyone decides to leave as soon as they finish High School because they feel it's just a dead end town? I feel really sorry for the young people living there today. There will be no warm memories to take with them on their lifes' journeys. No voices from the mountains.. calling them home. No strings that tie them forever to the place they grew up. What a really sad thought.

Name: Diane Conti CommentsI am writing in protest of the supermax prisons that are proposed for your town. I regret that I do not have my Supermax Awareness program finished yet as I would have come to make a presentation at your town hall meeting. I hope that as much effort goes into showing the real face of supermax to your towns people as I'm sure has gone into extolling the employment and economic advantages. In my opinion, other alternatives could have been found to bring up the local economy than opening a torture chamber for prisoners in your own back yard. The frightening part about all of this is that our laws being what they are, anyone can end up in a supermax without even trying. Even you. Please do your citizens a favor and show both sides of this issue. I urge you to also visit our website that I have enclosed. We are a non sectarian Buddhist group that supports the Buddhist practices of inmates around the country - many in supermax or lock down facilities. Please do not misunderstand, I DO believe if you make crime you do time, but let's have the time fit the crime and the prisons be as humane as possible. In the past, prison was for reform, today only for torture. We must ask ourselves what lessons are we teaching these inmates? Where will the supermax inmates from your facility go once released from your prison? Would you want them to live in your town after the "rehabilitation" they received there? Think about it long and hard. Gassho, Diane Conti co-founder of The Buddhist Inmate Sangha
Name: Austin CommentsSomeone should shut that damn prison down. All there doing is making worse criminals out of those guys. NO MORE PRISONS,

Name: Elizabeth Robertson CommentsI was born and raised in a suburb of Cincinnati. I attended a branch of the University of Cincinnati until I earned my associates degree and then transfered to Northern Kentucky University where I graduated in 1998 with a BA in Education. I am 27 years old and teach kindergarten at Felicity-Franklin Elementary and I currently live in Withamsville, OH. I attended a class at NKY titled "Appilachian Literature" and from that moment I've been hooked. THANK YOU to my professor, Dan Miller!! I can't get enough. I think this type of literature can really reach generations to come. It has definately helped me to realize the importance of family heritage and story telling. My mother's family (Chitwood) are from Pine Knot and my father's (Cole) are from Booneville (both in Kentucky). The people of Big Stone Gap are very fortunate to be rooted around those who appreciate and keep alive the history of that area. I love it and I have no personal heritage there at all!! Take care to notice everything!

Name: Billy C. Taylor, Sr. CommentsI born in Bonny Blue, Va. of Lee County 1936, moved to Dunbar, Va. around 1938, moved to Big Stone Gap, Va. around 1943, where I live in Southern area. I grew up in Southern, as my grandmother (bigmother) live in Southern all her life. Big Stone Gap had 5 deafies and enjoyed together. I remember that Big Stone Gap has wonderful business--Carmines, Monte Vista Hotel, Big Stone Theatre, Big Boy Drive-In, Ben Franklin Store (5 & 10 cents), Trail Theatre, Earle Theatre, Trail Motel, Tri-State Bus Line, Thompson (billiard), Drug Store, all gone. What happened? Since I went away from Big Stone Gap, Va. 1958. Because of no job for deaf people. I worked as printer in Richmond, Va., married to Deanna Duncan from Raleigh, NC. I got International Typographic Union card, move to major print newspaper in Washington Post. I worked for Washington Post for 22 years, then move to United States Postal Service in Richmond, Va. and work there for 17 years--now retired. I love Powell Valley of Big Stone Gap (Southern area). Recently we visited Southern August 19, 2001. My eyes was wide open to big change in Southern and more people live in Southern. I really miss this Southern area very much. If you know me, please e-mail me--Ocrman@aol.com. We really love Big Stone Gap and Powell Valley....... Do you have any picture of Southern? If so, please send to website of Big Stone Gap, Va.

Name: teresa (holbrook) simonds Commentsi love your site it keeps me informed of the happings there where i was born.
Name: JL CommentsI moved here a couple of years ago.. I must say the town is OK... Don't know if its me or not, but it seems to be hard to 'blend in' if you are not from here.. everyone has their friends and family that they choose to be with and its hard to break thru that . I even attended church here a few times and no one seemed to talk to me.. I was very friendly.. the preacher did, but you expect that.. no one asked me who I was or where I came from or anything.. 3 times!! anyway, sometimes I do go to the park and walk, but folks seem to be in their own little world.. It is a wonderful place to live, but you need to know someone or have connections to blend in to the people I guess.. where I used to live, I had no trouble making friends..
Name: Jay CommentsOkay well first I would like to say this town really isn't all that great like everyone says it is. This is an older citizens community and nothing for young adults like me! Our school is skanky and about to fall down! Our town council only wants stuff for older people and they just think the young adults should stay home and do nothing well they are sadly wrong! I think they need something for us to do and I'm not afraid to voice my opinion! The quacks arleady took away our park and I don't agree with that if they wanted a track they could build on at the school! That is all I have to say and I know ppl agree with me!

Name: Judith Pleasant CommentsGreat site. I plan to tell many about it, especially my sisters and my daughter Vicki who is a FASHION DESIGNER/COSTUMER and lives in LA. The pictures brings back many memories of my youth. I found the site through a publisher friend who I asked to help me to try to find an email address for Adriana Trigiani. (Still looking.) A friend of mine from Knoxville sent me her Big Stone Gap audio book. It was interesting to hear of some of the places where I grew up. I am also an author, so I thought Adriana and I might have some things in common to talk about. I was born - Judith Pleasant in 1945 in Stonega,Va. and lived there until I was 9 years old and we moved to Big Stone Gap- really Powell Valley, then to Big Stone. When I was 18, Mom,Dad, Lucy and Roy Pleasant, and the clan moved to Toledo, Ohio, where I now live. I am a Spiritualist minister and psychic medium, who uses my God given gift to help people whenever I can. I have written and self published a book titled My Spirit Helpers. In my book I mention my childhood in Stonega and surrounding area and the beauty that is held in those mountains. I have also written another book titled My Way of Coping With Cancer, which I haven't published yet. But hopefully when I do it will give people hope and faith that they can beat the disease as I did, with faith and God's help. I also write song lyrics and have a song demo called Pleasant Inspirations that ASCAP in NY. thinks is very good. So I guess there is a lot of talent that was born in the area and some are still waiting to be heard. While looking at your address book I saw many familiar names that was a part of my childhood. That was cool. I was in Big Stone and Stonega a little over a year ago catching up on memories when I was doing book signings in Tennessee. It broke my heart to see the beautiful little rustling creek that went under the foot bridge near the Baptist Church had dried up. We used to listen to it every night from our house on Buzzard Roost. If any of you remember me, and even if you don't check out my web site as it tells about me and my book. Many of you might find it very interesting. Hello to everyone- friends, and especially the Sizemores- my cousins. Would welcome any email from all who want to say hello. Many Blessings, Judy Pleasant

Name: Don Goosman CommentsI have stayed a dozen or more times in the Gap; last week I saw the drama with the kids from NC. It was very enjoyable. I always stay at the Country Inn and have become friends of Jack Gardner and Tibb Holyfield there at the inn. I always enjoy passing through on my way to Hickory, NC, from Ohio or on my back to Ohio. Of course, I always enjoy a great meal at Stringer's. I enjoy the very "walker-friendly" nature of Big Stone Gap. I have considered either moving there to teach or perhaps to retire in the area. My hometown of Waverly, Ohio, is also on US 23 in S. Ohio, about the same popu- lation (4,830) as BSG. I am enjoying the Adriana Trigiani novels very much, and I think it is great the way you've turned the town from what once looked like near economic depression into a popular place by means of technology and tourism. I look forward to returning to BSG in just a few days for a stayover on my way back to NC.
Name: Joshua Bolling CommentsGot to love the BSG. Need more pictures of Big Cherry and other sites, I have some great pictures of the lake I need to send you all. "...no place like home"

Name: James L. "Jimmy" Tucker CommentsI was born (1941) in Big Stone Gap, at my grandparents' home on Jerome Street. My father is Woody Tucker (BSG, Class of 1936) and my mother is Louise (Robinette) Tucker (Class of 1940). Dad and Mom are getting on in years, but both still have sharp memories of old friends and good times in BSG. My grandparents, now deceased, are John B. and Cornelia (Gilliam) Tucker and James L. and Pebble (Stone) Robinette. From my days at BSG Elementary, I fondly remember teachers Mahaffey, McClanahan, Flanary, Reasor, Wade, and Taylor, plus the intimidating principal, Professor J. Roy Horne -- and friends JImmy Baker (son of the school janitor), Billy Potter, Bobby Marrs, Jimmy Brown, Sandy Sandt, Nancy Ball, Susan Kilbourne, Eddy Carol Stone, Patty Harmon, the Pannells, the Lyles, Buddy Buchanan, myriad cousins, Aunt Becky Collins (the Melungeon Queen), etc., and lots of faces which I cannot now connect to names. Place names which still call forth unforgettable, bittersweet memories include the Amuse-U Theater, the Earle, Carmines, the swimming pool, the traveling carnivals during the summer, Kilbourne's Esso, Kelly Drug, Mutual Pharmacy, Daugherty's Grocery, Royal Laundry, Nickels', the Tourraine (sp?), the swanky modern bus station, Stoney's beer joint, the dime store where Aunt Frances worked, Lon Spears' wonderful-smelling barber shop, Bullitt Park, the magnificent, humongous school buildings, Glencoe Cemetery and the fountain, Beamontown, the Blue Hole, the old Wampler cabin at ESG, etc. Although my parents, my little brother and I moved from BSG in 1952, we continued to visit BSG family members regularly and I have always considered the Gap home. It is my fondest dream to return to the town of my birth and incomparable childhood. I graduated from Dublin (Va.) High School in 1959, from William & Mary in '63, and from Law School in 1966. My dear daughter, Mary, was born of my marriage to a Dublin beauty, Carole Chandler. I practiced law until 1989, when I was severely bitten by the writing bug - a very satisfying profession, which permits me to express my love for Southwest Virginia. To date, I have written 14 small books -- all about Southwest Virginia (i.e., Three Forks of the Powell) and I edit two monthly journals -- the Southwest Virginia Partisan (history) and the Bullfrog News & Review (literary). I would love to hear from other Big Stonians, reestablish contact with old acquaintances, meet new friends, and share our unique heritage, experiences, and remembrances -- or just shoot the breeze. God Bless Southwest Virginia and Big Stone Gap. Jim Tucker, 540-674-5161, backbonebooks@yahoo.com P. O. Box 504, Newbern, VA 24126

How did I not know about this book? Can't wait to read it. Just want to send good wishes to all those in SW VA! Amy Weaver Simms

I would appreciate help in tracing him. Thanks!

Name: Teri Barnett CommentsI live in bsg and I go to powell valley. The website was good, but there isn't much to do in big stone. One thing i would like to know is when are they going to film that movie based on the novel Big Stone Gap? It was said to be filmed last fall, then last summer, but from what i know they never did start. It seems to me that there was a big hoopla over nothing.

His father, H.W. Maness, was a miner. After retirement, he and his wife Opal ran a small roadside grocery just south of town on the road to Gate City. My father had four brothers; H., Jack, Delano, and Sonny. Any memories, anecdotes, etc., are welcome. My great-uncle and aunt, Orbin and Jewell Roller, also lived near Duffield for several years; Jewell worked as a schoolteacher.

Name: Becka Cook CommentsFrom viewing your page, I feel that it is more of an "Elderly" town. I feel like you need to involve the teeneagers and younger people in your town more...It was just a suggestion...but it was a very good one that u should take into consideration!
Name: Jace CommentsHey! I think this is a good page but I think it could be better with some help. But atleast we have a page unlike some places in this Wise Co. area. I think that our Big Stone Gap Town Council should have something in this area for the teenagers. I feel like they want stuff for the elders only and thats not fair. I hope someone in BSG feels the same way I do! And we need better schools too the High school is really bad!!!!!!! But oh well I guess they want us to suffer! I guess this is home of retirement!
Name: Rocky Messer CommentsI really enjoyed seeing photos of my home town, present and past. I was raised up in the cadet section, and was born in 1957. Name: Bob Swecker CommentsSurprized to see BSG has a website on the internet..my we have come a long way. My dad was born in Appalachia back in 1932. We traveled with him for many years while he was in the military. When he went to Korea in 1970, we lived in Big Stone Gap and rented a house at 123 East Wood Ave. At the time, it was across the street from the Telephone Building. I attended Powell Valley High as a Sophomore and Junior and even learned how to drive there with Mr. Neff, the coach as my driving instructor. I had him previously at Keokee High in the 66-67 time period while my dad was in Vietnam and we lived in Keokee. I worked at the old Buckles Grocery as a bagger and stock boy and at Wise Printing as a janitor during the year my dad was in Korea. Anyway, have a lot of fond memories of Southwest, Virginia. Name: Mike Kilburg CommentsLooking for a friend from Big Stone Gap. His name is Jeff Williams. I served with Jeff while stationed at Ft. Bragg in the 82nd Airborne. I believe Jeff has a brother named Matthew and his father taught at one of the area high schools. I had the pleasure of visiting Big Stone Gap in 1993 during leave and I really enjoyed the peaceful sorroundings. Jeff's parents yard had a small river that skirted the back end of thier property. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I can be contacted at mkilburg@msxi.com

Name: William R.Slemp CommentsThis site is rather unique in that it offers us the opportunity to travel back in our memories and relive some special moments. My summers vacationing in Olinger with my uncle Cletus(Hoss) Slemp were very special to me as were my visits with Aunt Eula up in Derby. Subsequently leaving Virginia in "78" after 2 years with Westmoreland only to find myself frequently traveling back in my minds eye to visit with great friends. To those of you who still remember those good old days I often think of you. Drop me a line sometime. Billy

Name: Erica Broach-Stewart CommentsI have moved away from BSG twice, and I keep returning. I don't know if it's the nature of the setting or the people, but I keep getting sucked back. I think that BSG is a great place to raise children, but I do think that we need to have more places for the youth to hang out. Also, I am looking for a few friends: Beth Dickerson, Greg Brewster, Donald Nessacery (?) and Jenny Perry. If anyone has any info, please let me know. I would like to see some of my old friends. So if you remember me, or graduted in 90, just drop me a line.
