Name: Tammie Wells Schaaf CommentsMy father was born and raised in Big Stone and I was born in Appalachia in 1959. We moved to NC when I was 1 but we returned every summer for 20 years. My Granny and Papaw lived just up from Bullitt Park. I spent every summer of my youth playing in that park. Every time I hear squeaky swings in a playground I'm wisked back in time to those wonderful days. I Miss It So So much. We still have relatives in the area. We have two Aunts still living there: Lawrencey Wells Poole and Aunt Yvonne Wells Brickey Our Grandparents were Lawrence Tildon and Eula Duncan Wells. Our father was Eugene (Gene) Clifton Wells. Their house was sold and I can't remember the adress. I would love to visit their old house one more time! I must look into that!
Name: Anna Lester CommentsIt really troubles me to read some of the comments about how someone can be so bored and "hate" his hometown so much. Granted there aren't giant shopping malls, or other amenities afforded to a larger area. What makes this place so special is the people that are there. Have you expended all of the possible resources available to you? I haven't been away that long and return home whenever I have a break or free time. You have to find your own enjoyment, this is a truth anywhere. While I do respect your opinions, I'd venture to say that you don't have the experiences that would deem you qualified to make such rash judgements on poor comparisons. All of these "things to do" bring along a lot of additional changes that aren't so pleasant. Think about that.
Name: Jayson CommentsMrs.Harned I strongly agree with your comments! There isn't anything for us to do here and once you finish high school there is nothing for you here. BSG is nothing but and old people place. That is all this town cares about. They need to wake up and see if they had something for the youth then more people would stay in this town!

Name: Sharon (Diddy) Collins Harned CommentsJust passing through again. It is disturbing to hear that the young people are bored in the Gap!They are the future and many or most of them will leave. Can you bring this subject up at school, church, and town meetings to see what you can do.How about dances, talent shows, plays, DJ's playing at the armory? There is talent in that town why not use them. Maybe an article in the Post asking the" youth" what would you like to see in this town? Just an idea.Don't sit idle and watch your children leave, you will miss them...
Name: Tonia CommentsHello everyone!!!!!! First of all, I would like to thank my mom. Mom, I love you and we appreciate everything you have done for us. Name: Jayson Commentshaha you can't have creativity here cause there isn't nothing to do! If you think this town is so wonderful why don't ya come to BSG and see how crappy it is for yourself? For one there isn't nothing to do here and all we have is crappy stores! I wouldn't tell anyone to come to this part of VA cause its boring and its not worth their time to come to BSG cause its just a spot on the map that don't even need to be there!
Name: Randy Commentsevery one here is stuck up, i hate this town
Name: Emma Doughty (Daugherty) CommentsI grew up in BSG,graduated and moved away in 1975.I was looking for pictures of the old school when I found this site,it's brought back so many memories! We lived in the Beamantown area, learned to swim in the Blue Hole, and walked to the Country Boy store until we were old enough to drive and cruise around the Country Boy Drive-In.I'm only 4 hours away, but rarely take time to get back for a visit
Name: Glenn E. Tolliver CommentsMy Father before his death in 1984 had told me that Trail of the Lonesome pine was about his family. He also said it was filmed on hie Grandmothers property. I would like to here from any family that can confirm this he was Charles third son.
Name: Pamela Carol (Lane) Reid CommentsI was born in Big Stone Gap Virginia in 1954 To Paul Allison Lane and Virginia Louise (Pleasant) Lane. We moved to Ohio in 1960. My Father was a coal miner and he had 5 children when the mine he was working at layed him off.He put Mom and us 5 kids in his car and drove to Ohio to find work. His brother William Earl Lane lived in Cincinnati and helped Dad get a job with Kroger so that he could support his family. The only "vacation" we ever took was to go back to Big Stone Gap and see all of our relatives. Ada Pleasant, Vernon Pleasant, Frank Pleasant, Rena and Roy Lane, Eunice (Lane) Pennington, they have all passed on. We still have alot a relatives there but Dad's health is such that he can't make the trip anymore. I was six years old when I left there and I have a lifetime of memories that I can go back to in Big Stone Gap. I call it "the good old days". I remember so much about that town and all of our relatives. It is a beautiful place. I am thankful that I have that part of my life to go back to. The people there come from the heart and there life is so full of love and compassion. It is so unlike so many of the big cities I have been to where its all hussle and bussle and no feelings from the heart.....God Bless Big Stone Gap, Virginia!

Name: Lorene Dotson Gudger CommentsI left a post in Feb. concerning a Yahoo Group for us to just visit and talk. I need to tell any who are interested that I have made that a "closed membership" and an "unlisted" one. If you are interested in joining us, please email me, tell me a little about yourself, and your BSG or Appalachia connection. I will then send an invitation. We want a "front porch atmosphere" but really need to know who's on the porch. Lorene
Name: kim lane Commentsi grew up in big stone untill i turned 18... right now i am really homesick. this small town will always be my home.(wish i would have realized it sooner!) i miss all my family and freinds. i want to say hello my mom(monika), dad (danny), michael, chad, and seth... i love you guys!!! see ya soon!
Name: Gail Hammitt Stamper CommentsDitto, Anonymous! There's nothing like a small town, where everyone knows everybody else, (including your business!) but that's part of the charm. At least, they are there for you in time of need. I wonder how hard some of the young people would be willing to work to change things, since they are so bored. It can be done, but not without effort. We had the same complaint where I live. When my husband became Mayor, he, with the help of the community, did something about it. They now have two modern playgrounds, basketball court, tennis court...and a baseball field, that a lot say reminds them of the one in, "Field Of Dreams." Little League and adults teams play there. ("Interested Jason? First, you have to get their attention!") I was born and raised in Big Stone, and I would love to see the younger ones have the same things, and more. Perhaps then, their memoires would become as precious as ours. Hello to my relatives, Ray & Agnes Bailey. Great job on the website!
Name: anonymous CommentsFor those of you who have stated that it is boring there, I just wanted to say that some day you may appreciate that. If you are creative you can create ways to avoid boredom. Work hard to get what you want. Peace and a small town community with values is hard to find and life outside of it is not necessarily what you think it is.

I was in town for the funeral of my grandfather, Henry Guy "Bud" Stone. I want to thank everyone for their concern for him. Everyone was so nice to my family. Name: Sam CommentsDear Jayson yes we think Bigstone is great but for a lot of us it is because we have moved away and all we have left is aur memorys of a time when live was simpler.when I visit home I am proud of the way Bigstone has not forgot it's great past.Rediscovering your past can be grate for young people. But I also realise young people dont whont to live in the past. the future is yours.I believe the town should not forget the young people.Liveing in state where the crime rate is high and drugs are a big prouplem I have found the best way to combate the proplem is to make the the young people feel like thay are part of the town.Ask them what the town needs and work whith them.As mutch as I love bigstone and dont whont it to evare forget its past.half of the population of big stone are under 21 you need thim as much as thay need you.I have met a lot of the towns young people thay are good kids the town needs to help keep thim thate way.Doing away with all thare hangouts is not the way to doit.
Name: Jayson CommentsTo whom it may concern. I am 16 years old and I live in this boring little town with nothing to do. I read your alls comments and you'll act like its the best place in the world. I have to say it's not! First, off there is nothing for us teenagers to do here in this town. All the town council wants is liquor by the drink and the assisted living! Don't they realize that there are teenagers in this town who deserve something to do? Well, I among other teens think it's time they gave us something. We have lived here all of our lives with nothing to do here and we want that to change. The Governor said that he wanted the teens today have jobs in our area, well I hate to break his heart there isn't any and if they are they will have the same problems we are having. This town has nothing to offer the family. They took our park away and now we are left at the house being bored out of our minds! Town Council it's time to wake up and give out kids something!

Name: Deann Dwyer CommentsThis is an interesting site - even for an outsider. I have read "Big Stone Gap" by Adriana Trigiani and then passed it along to a couple of my sisters, who then passed it along to friends and family. My ancestors came from Lee and Wise Counties around the turn of the century and we were raised in a very small town in Washington State. A lot of Ms. Trigiana's writings were familiar to us - even though we have never been to Virginia, let alone Big Stone Gap. I am trying to find information on my grandmother's family. If anyone can help in any way I would greatly appreciate it. She was born Marguerite Ellen Hale on May 11, 1883 in Bristol, Tennessee. She married my grandfather, William Emory Morris (son of Jacob S and Cynthia Olinger Morris)on January 25, 1898 in Clover Fork, KY. I believe he was a teacher in Inman.(Rumor has it that she was one of his students.) Her father and brother, Jimmy, may have worked in the mines. Their first son, Arthur, was born in Inman on December 3, 1898. They moved to WA in 1902-3. Maggie's mother died when she was young and her father remarried a woman with kids from a previous marriage, but they lost touch when the Morris' moved out west. I have a newspaper clipping from the Post dated June 13, 1990 where Hazel Joyce of Keokee, which is where William Emory was born when it was called Crab Orchard, was researching the Morris family and their connection to the story of "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Does anyone know if she ever finished that book? I would love to buy a copy if one is available.

Name: D. Robinette CommentsI was born and raised in BSG. I moved away in 1981. I visited there this past weekend and was very saddened by what I found. It reminded me of a ghost town. What has happened to the life and warmth that used to be? Where are all the teenagers? I remember looking forward to the weekend. There were always things to do. The town was alive with the sound of laughter and good clean hometown enjoyment. Where are the theaters, the bowling alleys, the hang out cafes, cruising main street, the pool room? The young people are the future of BSG. What happens when everyone decides to leave as soon as they finish High School because they feel it's just a dead end town? I feel really sorry for the young people living there today. There will be no warm memories to take with them on their lifes' journeys. No voices from the mountains.. calling them home. No strings that tie them forever to the place they grew up. What a really sad thought.

Name: florence LIGHT Commentssearching for relatives in the sw part of va. my father was SAMUEL THOMAS L LIGHT, he was a blacksmith by trade, but could do many things, so i was told. his father worked in the mines. so the story goes, that he was married up there, he and his wife had a big family, she passed away in the early 1900's. who raised the children, where did the children go to? sometime after that, my father moved to jacksonville, florida. there he met my mother and i was borned in 1937. she died when i was borned. my grandparents on my mothers side raised me. some years later he got sick and went back to va to be with his family there. anyway, I AM STILL SEARCHING FOR THE REST OF MY FAMILY, all these years later. wouldn't it be something if they were searching for me also? any LIGHT'S working on genealogy, please e-mail me, i would appreciate it so much.
