I remember the years spent at both of these schools, both East Stone Gap Elementary and Powell Valley High School as being some of the best years of my life. Friendships formed during those years still remain true now that I am older and a grandmother of 2. One of my children graduated from Powell Valley and now both of my grandchildren attend schools here. The values taught and instilled in us hopefully will be instilled in the children attending classes there now. Some of my fondest memories are those of Mrs. Trilby Robinette, Mrs. Dot Brickey, Mrs. Agnes Gilley, Mrs. Fuller and Mr. Raymond Davidson from the elementary school and Mr. Garnett Gilliam, Mrs. Julia Jarrett, Mr. Cecil Maddux, Mrs. Leah Hicks, Ms. Beth Siphers and Mrs. Evelyn Whitt at the high school. I can not leave out Ms. Billie Jean Scott, the school librarian. I thank each of these people for the wisdom and guidance they gave me.

I was born in Keokee, Va in !949, My parents were Otis and Ocie (Morris) Bailey. We lived in the community of Rawhide. If anyone was in Keokee at that time remembers Cooper's store and the restaurant beside it called Granny Deaton's, she always had good food to eat. And also the Blue Star Bar owned by Billy Gene Morris. Keokee Mountaineer's great Basketball and Baseball players. After I graduated from Keokee in 1967, I started working at the Keokee School, in first grade as an Aide with the first grade teacher, Ms. Ann Burgan. Found the site by accident. Glad I did. Just want all to know I still remember those Appalachia/Powell Valley football games. I remember the "stallion", the bus rides from Exeter, the swinnin' hole at the RR tracks above Imboden, Denny Tankersley and his "Crazy Driving". Watching Randall Hampton and Coon Jones knock the cover off a baseball at Exeter. I return there every so often but I am always there in my mind and heart. I was born in Roda, Va. When my family moved in 1960 to Algonac, MI, about 80 miles from Detroit. The town is about the size of BSG. The kids at school here called me hillbilly because of my accent. I still keep in touch with some of my childhood friends that now live in Rosehill, East Stone Gap and Kingsport. I have relatives there and every chance I get I enjoy going back and visiting. We are planning a family reunion sometime this summer in Mendota. This past summer I had the opportunity to take my best friend of 42 years on a road trip. It consisted of stopping in OH and visiting family there. Then back on the road to VA and was taken to all the places of my past, the Singing Convention in BSG, visit more relatives in Mendota. We left there to go to the Smokies, then onto GA to visit more relatives and finally headed back to MI. She could see why I still have a special place for the hills. She liked the south so much after we got back to MI, she started putting in for transfers from her Postal Clerk job here to anywhere in the south that had an opening. She landed in FL and doesn't regret it. She hates the winters!! I can handle them. I am proud to have been a Coal Miner's daughter and am still a "Hillbilly" at heart. When I transferred from the inner city schools of Detroit, MI to the 6th grade at the old Appalachia Elementary, I felt like a misfit. My parents were from Roda & Inman originally. The MI kids called me 'hillbilly' and the VA kids called me 'city girl'. I grew to hate school, felt like the outcast and that even the teachers were against me. Little did I know that I made some of the best friends I have ever known. Appalachia became home to me very quickly and no matter where I have been on this road of life, or how far I will continue to go, Appalachia will always be home. Moved to Big Stone in the Mid 70's with my Sis, Audrey(still lives there) and lived with My Aunt Twyla and Uncle Bob. My Dad came out later. I'm glad I had the chance to grow up in such a great place. The memories from those days in my adopted home town will be unforgetable. My family and I try to get back at least every other year to recharge as it were. I have a step son Dylan(8) and daughters Seana(8, Hannah(4), Ceanna(1.5) and one on the way(April). My wife is a Kansas girl, Dawn. And of course they all know the history of the "1982" VHSL State Champs, the ones who started it all at PVHS. Go Vikes! I,ve got lucky enough to run into a few of my old teammates and friends when I'm "home". But maybe some of ya'll can email me since I,ve got my computer now. I am looking for an old friend, Mark Eldrige, He used to live in the wildcat section. He had an older brother Tom and a younger sister Rose. Any help would be appreciated. My football buddies here in Kansas all know of the "Jones" boys and when we get to "Arrowhead" to watch the Chiefs, or see it on TV. My family and I were raised in Big Stone Gap Virginia and we were well known as a highly talented and respected family and we represented the town of Big Stone Gap. My GrandFather invented the first pressing Iron that is and has been in the Museum for many years. My Father (John Wiley Patton)and Walter Kane were pioneers who lived and worked for the Stonegra Coal and coal company whose main offices were in Pennsyvania. My Brothers and I play sports and were very well known for athletic achievements as some of us played for Central High and I played for Bland High and we held the record for the most consecutive wins in the state in football but it my not be recorded as at that time the schools were secregated. The coach at that time was Mr. Rexall Carnes who was not only a coach and mentor but was also a professor who taught students who went on to attend colleges and Universities in various states. My family resided @ 816 Shawnee Avenue on popular Hill. We had a outstanding relationship with everyone as I played Little baseball at Big Stone Gap and even tho schools were secregrated schools at that time we played together (Black & White) and almost went to the Little League World Series but on our last game we lost to a highly talented team in Beckley West Virginia however one the members of our team (Willie Horton) relocated in Detroit, Michigan and became a star for the Detroit Tigers. There were many star players that came from the area that I knew such as Carrol Dale who played at Wise and became a football star for the Green Bay Packers. There was Chester Palmer who a star Quarteback at Big Stone Gap who married the daughter of the owner of Kelly Cheveralet a car dealership and well company in Big Stone Gap. I also played with the Grandfather of th Jones boys of Appalachia who sons attended the University of Virginia & one attended Notre Dame and now are pros with The Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears. Mr Browne Polly who has or had a Dentist business were great friends and we shared a lot of good memories together as we grew up in Big Stone Gap Virginia. My Father also worked for Former Governor Holden and his family and I knew him personally and he did a lot of good things for the citizens of his home town and I must say he represented us well. I have a lot good memories of my Home town and sometimes I attend High School Rrenunons as the Patton Family had nine family members who attented schools in Big Stone Gap. I am currently living in England as severed 25 years with the Air Force and worked for The Department of Defense in Belgiun supporting the movement of forces to Irag. I recently retire from that position and now I am living in England. I can go on and on about my home town and perhaps send you some photos as I grew up in my home town as I know it. The night sparkled with miracles and magic was all about. I could see all over town�. the Trail and the Country Boy Pool, The Wildcat, Cadet, Southern, Mike�s, Jack�s and Carmine�s too. There was Powell Valley Drive-in and Crackers Neck And down by the high school stood old St. Nick. The students were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of presents danced in their heads. With mid-term finals just one week away The teachers had the tests all stacked in their sleigh. When out in the parking lot there rose such a clatter I jumped to my feet to see what was the matter. I ran to the gymnasium quick as a flash Tore open the shutter and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave a luster of midday to the objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should I see But eight of my teachers with a huge Christmas tree. Mr. Horton was out in front, so lively and quick I knew in a moment he was dressed as old St. Nick. More rapid than eagles, his courses he came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now Broadwater! Now Brooks! Now Dingus! Now Darnell! On Raines! On Read! On McChesney and Maddux too! To the top of the porch! To the upstairs hall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! As quick as bunnies they scurried along Cheering and laughing and singing a song. They were pulling a sleigh filled to the top And by each class room they skidded to a stop. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on each desk The crackling of paper as he threw down the test. His eyes� how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, His clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of exams he had flung on his back, He looked like a peddler just opening his pack. He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. I am now a retired SMSgt from the USAF and the son of a retired SFC from the U.S. Army. My father and mother had seven children, I being the oldest. My late father was born in Appalachia, VA., the son of the late John F. and Emma (Clark) Swecker. He had many brothers and sisters and was the second from the youngest. His family was raised in Moneyhun Holo which is just off the old road to Norton, just before the coal camp of Dunbar. His family did farming. Dad entered the Army at the age of 17 and it was at that age, he was seriously wounded in Korea. In spite of his severe wounds in Korea, he went on to serve in Vietnam, Korea once again and virtually all over the world. He finally retired and settled down in Columbus, GA, his last assignment in 1972, where I and each of my siblings graduated from High School. With the exception of Korea and Vietnam, my mother, Martha and my six siblings, traveled with my father to each assignment. During the times we could not accompany him, we returned to Southwest VA while he was assigned in those areas, which we could not go. They were normally 1 year in duration. In 1966-1967 timeframe, when my father was in Vietnam, we lived in Keokee, VA and attended Keokee Schools. On the road to Keokee, the Imboden Road, I had an aunt and uncle that owned a grocery store, Roy Sr and Pearl (Swecker) Tankersley. My cousin Glenn, their son is currently an attorney in Virginia Beach. In the 1970-1971 timeframe, my father went to Korea again and we resided in BSG in a home we rented at 123 East Wood Ave, just across the street from the Telephone Building. I attended my 10th grade at Powell Valley High during this period. My cousin, Shirley (Morrison) Fisher worked at the BSG Bank during that time and her husband Tommy worked for the Telephone Company. Besides going to school, I worked part-time at Wise Printing, sweeping the floors and such to make some spending money. I also worked part-time at Bill Buckles Grocery as a bagger and in the meat department with my father's cousin, Joe Clark. Incidentally, on my first day at PVH, in my Geography class with Mr. Carnes, he asked me if I was related to a young man in the front row named Steve Swecker. What a coincidence! I said no, but we were obviously related. We subsequently met his parents Pat and Jan Swecker who lived in a house right next door to the Drama, Trail of the Lonesome Pine. We visited them often. I understand that Steve is married and still lives in BSG. During this year, my mother was also pregnant with her 7th child and her doctor was Dr Sutherland. He had a daughter, Julie, who was in one of my classes. On 16 Sep 1970, Dr. Sutherland delivered my sister and youngest of my siblings, Mary Jane at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, VA. My brothers, sister and I got to give her, her name. We unanimously named her Mary Jane. Jane after Jane (Draper) Stone and Mary (MeMe) Draper, the aunt of Jane. MeMe worked for many years at the BSG Police Department. She was the sister of the late Nell Draper and late Gladys. Jane�s mother was Nell. We met the Draper and Stone family following the death of Jane's husband, Capt Rodney (Dickey) Stone (USAF). He was a casualty May 1970 over North Vietnam. He was the pilot of an RF-4E and was shot down during a Reconnaissance/Fighter mission over North Vietnam. His aircraft was based out of Thailand. It was so tragic and for me, who was only 16 then and 51 now, there is still a hole in my heart for not only a wonderful family but, their son Todd who never knew his father in this life. They lived in a house behind us at that time and while I can no longer remember how we became so close, I guess the fact that we had some common bonds and faith, somehow drew us together. As coincidence would have it though, in 1973, I was the crew chief on a military aircraft for one of Dickey's and Jane's friends. He was an instructor pilot at Moody AFB, GA on T-37s and T-38s. That was my first assignment after I entered the Air Force in 1972. It was during this same period at Moody, that I was temporarily reassigned to Thailand and crew the same type of aircraft (RF-4C)s that Capt Stone had flown some three years earlier. As far as I know, Jane still lives in BSG. I did get an opportunity to visit with Jane, Todd and Dickey's father, Mr. Stone; on the 4th of July holiday of 1994, if my memory serves me correctly. Todd had just graduated from college, not his father's Alma Mater of VMI though. This was the first time back for me in some 24 years. I still think often of Jane and the Draper and Stone Families. My cousin Shirley still lives in Wildcat and I have a cousin Gary Lynn Thompson that resides in Appalachia. He worked for many years at Appalachia High School and his wife Faye works at the hospital in BSG. My father passed away in 1996 at the age of 64 from a military service connected disability. We all miss him terribly. My mother has survived him and she is now 71. I, (Bobby), Billy, Junior, Johnny, Patsy, Georgie, and Mary Jane still survive as well, in total gratitude to God! All with the exception of Mary Jane, live somewhere in Georgia. I did retire from the U.S. Air Force, after 26 years, with time in Southeast Asia and a tour in Korea almost 7 years ago now. Incidentally, like my parents, I have seven children (most adults). They are Gina (32), graduate of the University of Dayton and Army Psychology Specialist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center who sees all the wounded returning from Iraq and Afghanistan; Casey (28), Nurse and he is an Army Nurse Reservist; Crystal (26) Great mother and homemaker; Jessica (25), Civil Engineer and Highest Honors Graduate from Georgia Tech; Courtney (20), still thinking about what she wants to do, Zackery (11), fifth grade; and Kaitlyn (9), 3rd grade. To that I have 3 grandchildren, Bridget, Megan and Devin. Today, I work as a government contractor in the area of the U-2. Yes the same aircraft flown by the late Gary Powers of Pound, VA who was shot down by the Russians in the early 60's. He did survive that crash, but was killed some years later in a helicopter accident. Lastly, we are related in large measure to the Sweckers and Clarks of Appalachia. We look forward to hearing from you. Each time I hear anything about Southwest, VA, I get this homesick feeling. A place in which I really spent very little time, but one nonetheless if conditions were right, I would settle down in for the rest of my life. I guess it�s the beauty, mountains, people and tranquility!

Comments: I was always very proud of Appalchia and our school. I felt we were the best at everything. I remember Joe Rose, Pete Dorton,Mr. Reasor. Coach Riggs, Coach Clark. (Mr. Robinson as my math teacher.) Ms. Callahan as my 10th grade English instructor and Ms Willis in the 9th grade. Ms.Hurd in American History. Ms. Thompson,and Mr. Sizemore. I remember friends I still hold close in my heart today. I remember Mrs. Berta and Mr. Taylor's Friday dance classes in Physical Education. So many friends have passed away over the years. I remember when I went away to college, how I missed so many people I care about and stayed in contacted until we all made different lives. Some I still see and talk with occasionally. I will never forget our school song...the ballgames, I remember how upset I would get when we lost a game to PV. Everytime I pass the old elementary field that has been for sale for so many years, I think of the games of softball during breaks and the band practicing on the field. Moved to BSG from Dyersburg,Tn. where my dad was a football coach. I am the grandson of M.R. McCorkle who owned McCorkle Lumber Co. near W.L.S.D. radio station. My dad, Billy Hicks, coached in Apalachia, Johnson City and Elizabethton. We moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida in 1958. I graduated from Dan McCarty High in 1960, then graduated from Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga in 1969 with a degree in Theology. My family is still in BSG, my mamaw and papaw are Jerry & Margie Underwood and they are still living in Cadet. My papaw was a coal miner and they have lived their entire life there. Skipping double dutch, Opal Jones fell, kept skipping, next day came in with a cast, she had broken her arm. Mr Skeens going over to check out a transformer box that blew on the edge of the school yard. A bunch of sparks blew out and he ran as fast as he could to get out of the way. Leaving school and getting chili (with out the dog) at Carmines. We moved up north at the end of my 4th grade year. Oh, and sitting on a sack of soup beans eating my soup beans at school. Still love those soup beans. I be in Big Stone with most or all of my 5 brothers (Bruce, Gary, Brian, Stuart, and Jimmy) this summer '04. Lots of good memories.

My family moved in 1964 to Cincinnati, but the memories and experiences remain with me. We used to live on 3rd Avenue East next to the Morris family and around the corner from the Hollinger family and the Simpson family. I remember the old elementary school well, originally built as a 2 room school, but with additions that made it a 4 room school. Nor did I have my own helmet, we had to share. Although the county built the new school, it allocated little or nothing for supplies, library books, uniforms, and equipment, which underscored the importance of Brown v Bd. of Education in this 50th Anniversary Year(one of the companion cases was a Virginia case). BSG is a beautiful town with some very intelligent people. I left in the mid-70's but visit often. The things I learned in BSG have taken me to vast travels where I have met numerous famous people. My fondest memories were from the 3rd. Grade and Mrs. Ruble Lawson, my teacher at Roda Elementary School. I looked for her for many years and wanted to "Thank" her for the impression she had made on me in my life. I was in 6th grade and half of 7th in Big Stone Gap School. Elementary and high school were in the same group of buildings east of downtown. There was no cafeteria; and as a result lunch time was about one and half hours. That was plenty of time to eat well and get into plenty of mischief. I don't recall the principal's name; but I do recall his solution to boys fighting on the school yard. He would bring out the boxing gloves, form a ring of onlookers, and referee a few rounds between the combatants. I was known as Lawrence Rhodes then. We lived at the Cox Tourist Camp west of town, a member of "Cox's Army" as the diverse group of kids from there were known. See my web site for a picture of the 1948-1949 Sixth Grade class. (Updating to a permanent e-mail address, phone # and WEB site, since it changed from my original 1999 posting) My Dad (James E., Sr) was the curator at SWVa Museum forever (29 years). He's gone now, plus Mom (Beulah), my brother Jim and, sadly, recently, my brother, Bob. My sister, Francie, lives in Jonesborough, TN. I remember starting school at East Stone and I only attending half-day. I was one of Miss Perrow's "evening folks." I had many memories of going to school at East Stone and what a beautiful school it was. I remember the high school kids and how beautiful I thought Mitzi Caudill, Linda Tate, and Carolyn Osborne were. I remember the night the school burned. We could see the black smoke from our house at the mouth of Cracker's Neck. I attended PVHS from 64-68. J. P. Horton was the greatest - he never raised his voice or turned his head. All he did was walk the halls and snap his fingers. He demanded respect. I work for Newport News Public Schools now and believe me, we need more people like J. P. Horton, Rucker Skeen, Faith Cox, Billie Jean Scott, Jerry Clark, Wade Miller, Patsy Arnold, Mary Alice Gembach, Frances Sams, and I certainly can't leave out my brother-in-law, Jimmie Kilgore!!

Hello all, I read almost all of the "memory" statements but only one referred to Bland kids. I am trying to find out the address where it was located. My family, (grandmother, great aunt mother aunt, uncle and cousins were all born in BSG.) My gggrandfather, Houston, was a chef and my gggrandmother was a mid wife. Family land was located very near the school, Miss "Straws(?)" lived at the end/ beginning of the road. Memories....Bullitt Park, Mrs. Mac, Jack Gibbs, Faith Cox, Billie Jean Scott, badmitton, basketball at our house, snow days, High Knob, Gary Kilbourne, all the families wiuth two girls...the Renshaws, the Rankins, the Jeters, the Liddles, the Mayhews(they had three!), the Southlanders, my daddy as the first "Uncle Billy" in the drama...talk about memories! I remember the old oiled wood floors at BSG, running around the upper deck at the old gym, the day they asphalted the whole playground. The day all the Bland students came to join us. (Virgil Long picking a fight with me the first day) Getting my first paddeling for pocking Sue Colier (Sturgill) with a pencil. I remember being down by 5 points to Madison with 59 seconds left and Grayland Jackson scoring 6 points and stealing the ball two time. We son 60-59. I remember asking Rucker Skeen about WWII to postpone a test till the next day. I remember Otis and Rickie.
